. . . "An example? Take the statements made recently on National Public Radio by a representative of the Violence Policy Center. NPR described the VPC as 'one of the more aggressive gun groups in Washington.' Yet the VPC's representative claimed: 'If the existing assault-weapons ban expires, I personally do not believe it will make one whit of difference one way or another in terms of our objective, which is reducing death and injury and getting a particularly lethal class of firearms off the streets. So if it doesn't pass, it doesn't pass.' " ...

"On Tuesday, March 23, Governor Walker signed Senate Bill 48, HB294 and HB 295 into law."

"SB 48 clarifies existing Utah law, which asserts that the right to keep and bear arms is a constitutionally protected individual right and that there should be uniform laws across the state. SB 48 will also ensure that unelected bureaucrats cannot usurp the legislature’s authority on the subject and impose restrictions on law-abiding citizens."

"House Bill 294 brings Utah into conformity with Federal law in respect to firearm purchases. It repeals outdated language regarding background checks necessary to comply with Federal law and the bill repeals the requirement that individuals purchasing firearms from dealers show multiple pieces of identification."

"House Bill 295 streamlines the application process by reducing unnecessary and duplicative materials which applicants for permits must file and which the Bureau of Criminal Identification must process."

IL: Senate OKs Self-Defense Exemption To Gun Bans

Gun owners who use their weapon in self-defense got another vote of support from Illinois lawmakers.

The state Senate today approved legislation to protect people who violate local gun laws but end up using a gun in self-defense. It would let them argue in court that their possession of the gun was justified.

It would apply only to local gun charges and not state charges, such as assault or attempted murder.

Critics say it would make it easier for people to use illegal weapons and escape punishment.

It passed 38-to-20 and now moves to the House, which passed a similar bill yesterday.
---

Proof positive that these "critics" are, in fact, opposed to individual self-defense.

"The Senate passed a bill Thursday advocated by the National Rifle Association and designed to protect sport shooting ranges from environmental regulators' lawsuits."

"The bill (SB 1156) is a toned-down version of an earlier measure that would have held the state accountable for cleaning up ranges where accumulated lead bullets contaminate area ground water."

"Passed in a 32-6 vote, the Senate bill now gives Florida's more than 400 gun ranges immunity from Department of Environmental Protection lawsuits, if they follow best management practices, though it doesn't protect ranges from other types of suits."

At first, Linda Larive thought she was looking at a big brown dog in the distance Wednesday afternoon near her home in the hills.

"It was a bear. Trust me, no question," Larive said later Wednesday. "I kept looking at it, and pretty soon, it stood up. And dogs don't stand up on their hind legs and sniff the air."

Larive called authorities. And soon, Rapid City police officers were checking the area near her home. They didn't find a bear. But her son later found some tracks.

. . . Still, any bear should be respected, left alone and reported to GF&P, Kintigh said.

"Don't press them or try to get close. Keep your distance and back away," he said. "And remember, they're still listed as a threatened species in South Dakota."

"But while I applaud Rock the Vote for so vigorously fighting in the name of free speech, its energies seem misspent. I'd much rather see them focus on things such as Clear Channel's recent firing of Howard Stern. That decision had nothing to do with so-called decency standards. He didn't even do anything indecent! As Stern himself has pointed out, he was yanked for condemning the government a day before Clear Channel was set to testify before Congress. He was sacrificed on the altar of the FCC."

"ATTORNEY Martin George intends to file an application for a judicial review of a decision taken by Coroner Sherman McNicolls. After months of hearing the evidence of the witnesses at the inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Phillip Seerattan, McNicolls yesterday ruled that warrants be issued for the arrest of PC Gary Moore and WPC Suad Weekes for the unlawful killing of Seerattan. Seerattan had been fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with the officers at the International School on November 20, 2002."

"...George said, 'We are convinced that the magistrate’s ruling is one which cannot stand up to scrutiny or review..."

"But there is nothing certain in this life. That is one thing I have learned in my 29 years. Even my gold certificates could be taken from my bank by government dictate. I could buy land, and it could be downzoned into worthlessness, the taxes could be jacked up to the sky, and I could lose it, as in Richland County, SC and the 'Congaree Preserve'. Any monies in my bank accounts can be frozen or garnished. If I store my dollars under my mattress at home, cops could bust down my door, take my basil plant and my sack of flour and all my cash and claim I was dealing in substances, and even board up my house. While the labs were verifying that no, I'm just someone who cooks food, my cash would be on its way to the U.S. Marshall's office to be processed and sent back to the thieves, er, DEA agents who stormed my house and they'd be under no obligation to return anything to me. (That VERY thing happened in NC, this state, a year or so ago, AND was in the papers. How often does it happen when the press isn't looking?)"

"The Justice Policy Institute's study added new data to the mounting evidence of the failure of 'three strikes.' For instance, the total prison population increased by 23 percent since the law was passed, with those sentenced under the new law increasing by a whopping 863 percent. A second finding is that, contrary to promises of getting tough on violent criminals, more than half of those sentenced for their 'third strike' were convicted of nonviolent crimes ...while almost two-thirds (65 percent) of both second and third strikers were nonviolent offenders. ..."

"A federal grand jury indicted anti-tax author Irwin Schiff and two associates Wednesday, charging them with conspiracy to defraud the United States by helping others file false tax returns."

"Schiff, the author of 'The Federal Mafia: How It Illegally Imposes and Unlawfully Collects Income Taxes,' argues there is no legal requirement to pay income taxes. Government lawyers have been pursuing civil actions that would bar Schiff from selling his book and from holding tax seminars."

Apparently when it comes to the government stealing its citizens' earnings, the First Amendment does not protect free speech. Apparently the First Amendment protects defiling religious symbols and upholding the "rights" of pedophiles, but not interference with the appropriation of earnings.

Present day America would have made King George real proud.

"In 2000, many libertarian-leaning voters decided to vote against Al Gore, giving their endorsement to rule the country to George W. Bush." ...

"Bush promised a more 'humble' foreign policy, respect for states’ rights on medical marijuana, a tax cut, and a fledgling Social Security 'privatization' plan. Across the board, said many of my friends, George II was the lesser of two evils.

"Of course, he also called for more education spending, bizarre 'faith-based' welfare programs, and expanded Medicare coverage for seniors. 'Even so,' chided many of my friends, 'he’s still the lesser of two evils.' "

"By now, most sensible people have abandoned that theory. Bush won the presidency by the smallest margin in American history, and has pretty much gotten away with everything we feared Gore might have inflicted upon us."

Police say they have uncovered a misunderstanding by firearm owners of their right to sell their gun.

A firearms audit by the New England local area command has uncovered registered owners who believe they can sell their weapon to another licence holder.

Police say it is against the law.

Under firearms laws, the sale of firearms can only be arranged through a licensed firearms dealer, or if it is witnessed by an authorised police officer where there is not a dealer within a 100 kilometre radius.
