Gun-ban lobby losing its shot

"Following publication this week of an MSNBC.com report about the record number of American citizens who are now legally licensed to carry guns for personal protection, there should be little mystery remaining about why the gun prohibition lobby has lost so much traction and credibility in recent years."

"The American public has realized that everything the gun prohibition message is fundamentally fraudulent. Anti-gunners repeatedly opposed concealed carry laws with forecasts of Wild West shootouts, widespread mayhem and more homicides. That has not happened." ...

"GLENN BECK, HOST: There is a proposal that is getting very little attention. It's not time yet, it's kind of softening the earth. It's called the Democracy Restoration Act of 2009 — wow, it sounds patriotic, doesn't it?"

"So, what's the act?"

"It's a proposal to restore voting rights of up to 4 million released felons." ...

"Now, let me ask The New York Times: You are saying that we should restore — because you've paid your dues, you're going to restore the rights. All of them? Are you going to restore their right to the Second Amendment or is it only the voting rights?" ...

"Yesterday's column about the record number of concealed pistol license holders overlooked one point that should be mentioned: The anti-gun [VPC] has a website devoted to homicides allegedly committed by people who have carry permits."

"The website, Concealed Carry Killers, keeps a running tally that claims more than 150 victims of legally-armed citizens ..."

"One might wonder if this scorecard includes Barbara Graham of Washington, D.C. ... Graham is the anti-gun activist who ... illegally carried a .45-caliber pistol that belonged to her murdered son to the home of the man she believed responsible for the slaying. He wasn't, but that didn't help Kikko Smith, then 23, when Graham pulled the pistol and shot him, leaving him paralyzed for life. ..." ...

"Chicago is the center of the gun world as all parties involved in the gun debate in America await the Supreme Court ruling on whether the longtime citywide gun ban is constitutional. Sadly, if there is a city that would benefit from more permissive gun laws for law-abiding citizens it is Chicago."

"What many people don't realize is there have been over 13,000 murders in Chicago since the younger Richard Daley was first elected mayor in 1989."

"To put that number in perspective, it means since 1989 Chicago has experienced a 9/11 roughly every 4 years, or one 9/11 for each of Daley's terms in office." ...

"The one-third or so of American adults who can't obtain permits to carry concealed weapons from their home states need only look to Florida and Utah — and their mailboxes — to legally carry hidden guns."

"Because both states grant concealed-carry permits to non-residents and have reciprocal agreements with other states under which their permits are recognized, possession of a Utah or Florida permit gives non-residents the right to carry hidden firearms in as many as 32 other states — though often not the one in which they live."

False Claim: Guns Harm Owner's Family More than Protect

"The firearm safety expert quoted in this unfortunate story about a youth who was fatally shot by another youth with a BB gun gets it right when he says, 'The cardinal rule of gun safety is that you never ever, ever, point a gun at anybody, even if you think it's loaded or not loaded.' In other words, always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction."

"On the topic of firearm safety in the home, however, the story incorrectly states that a gun in the home is more likely to do harm to the gun owner or family member than to protect the family. This is false, as Dr. Gary Kleck and others have shown in their research on defensive gun uses ... something that happens as much as 1.5 to 2 million times annually." ...

"Recent events have led us to re-evaluate our current laws relating to gun control."

"From the shooting earlier this month at the Pentagon to the one last month at the University of Alabama, the question has been raised whether stricter gun control laws would have prevented these tragedies."

... "In defense of the anti-handgun ordinance, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said, 'We've turned our backs on common-sense gun laws in America ...'"

"Common sense is actually the best reason I can cite for the ordinance to be struck down."

"There's no need to discuss the unconstitutionality of the law; the Second Amendment speaks for itself. The Supreme Court is expected to confirm this in its decision. Even if the Constitution didn't protect the right of individual Americans to keep and bear arms, though, gun control laws would still be nonsensical."

Mitch Daniels signed into law a bill that allows workers to bring firearms onto company property, as long as they are locked in vehicles and out of sight."

"Watching his home state’s gun laws become gradually more lax as the years pass, Helmke is left to wonder as gun-related crimes in Indiana continue to elevate1 and gun lobbyists wage a highly-funded campaign against him."

"You don't actually have to wear a tricorn hat and powdered wig to agree with Scalia's theory of originalism, but I've found it helps. Others like to spew out endless series of statistics on crime rates and gun possession. Both sides seem to have their own set of numbers ... and their own collection of anecdotes ... In these discussions, however, the real debate about the need for guns and the real meaning of Second Amendment is completely overlooked.
