. . . "Ban proponents and the media certainly won't give people a straight definition of what they mean by assault weapons. Judging by the AK47 and Uzi references, it's easy to think that machine guns are being banned."

"Many news reports fail to even mention that the guns in question are semiautomatic, not automatic. One gets the impression that the NRA is fighting for the right to go hunting with machine guns. Even 'The Simpsons' lampooned the ban's opponents, with Lenny (speaking at an NRA meeting) claiming that assault weapons are 'manufactured for a reason: to take out today's modern super animals.' "

"Given these impressions, it's interesting to find out what's actually banned." ...

"Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) is sponsoring the bill, after pilots complained that the Transportation Security Administration is trying to discouraging them from carrying guns in the cockpit."

"A Second Amendment group praised Rep. Wilson for making sure the TSA lives up to its congressional mandate: 'We support fully an initiative by Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina seeking original cosponsors for a proposed Cockpit Security Technical Corrections and Improvements Act,' said John Michael Snyder of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA)."

"Most varmint hunters are aware that the Winchester 220 Swift has the fastest muzzle velocity of any factory cartridge. With a 40-grain bullet, the Swift generates a bit more than 4,000 feet per second at the muzzle. The Swift has reigned as 'king' for many years, but its reign apparently is over. A new kid on the block may steal the title from the Swift."

"Ruger’s new 204 caliber boasts a muzzle velocity of 4,225 fps with a 32-grain Hornady bullet. While the figures show the 204 to be much faster than the Swift, it is also worth noting that there is an 8-grain difference in bullet weight. It’s entirely possible that the Swift could easily duplicate the 204’s velocity if it used a 32-grain bullet. ..."

"A federal appeals court has opened the door for police officers in Texas and two other states to search homes and buildings for evidence without a warrant — a ruling that two dissenting judges called 'the road to hell.' "

"Acting on a Baton Rouge case, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that police do not need an arrest or search warrant to conduct a swift sweep of private property to ensure their own safety."

"Any evidence discovered during that search now is admissible in court as long as the search is a 'cursory inspection,' and if police entered the site for a legitimate law enforcement purpose and believed it may be dangerous."

"According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, only 31.7 percent of violent crimes, including rape and sexual assault, saw a police response of 5 minutes or less. ...while 31.4 percent responded in 11 minutes to an hour."

"...How long does it take for an armed thug to pull the trigger and how many will die waiting for the police? How will cowering under a desk, locked in the same building with an armed villain, protect the children and teachers in those schools? How will taking away their every means of defending themselves, and punishing them for possessing anything resembling a tool of self defense going to save them from someone who has no regard for the law and no respect for human life?"

Each kit contains a safety curriculum and a cable-style gun lock. The locks fit most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. "The civilian counterpart of the .50-caliber firearm used in battles from Bastogne to Baghdad that became a war movie icon is being recast by some as a tool of terrorism." ...

"In New York, a ban on the sale of the large-bore firearms favored by upscale competitive shooters has become an anti-terrorism priority for the Democrats who rule the Assembly chamber. Republican Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said Wednesday he is considering what would be the nation's first state ban." ...

" 'The .50-caliber weapon is capable of shooting planes out of the sky, piercing armor,' said Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat who represents the lower-Manhattan area hit in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks."

" 'Fifty-caliber guns have no legitimate purpose and to keep them legal is supporting keeping them legal for terrorists and others,' Silver said."

"Take down a plane?" said John Robertson of the 4,000-member worldwide 50 Caliber Shooters Association based in Monroe, Utah. "Ducks and geese are a bigger threat."

"He said a .50-caliber firearm is too heavy, too hard to conceal and creates too little damage to be a terrorist tool. He said the bullet creates a half-inch hole and doesn't splinter to create further damage as in smaller-caliber bullets."

" 'We have a better safety record than your local high school cheerleading team,' Robertson said."

"A gun control battle in Missouri recently flooded the Centre County Sheriff's Office with concealed weapon permits from individuals living there."

"The overload is due to political wrangling in Missouri over the terms of a newly enacted concealed weapons law that sheriffs in that state are not complying with because the state is not adequately funding the process."

"Individuals are now applying to other states that issue permits honored in Missouri, in protest of a February state Supreme Court ruling that upheld county non-compliance."

"The Centre County Sheriff's Office received about 3,000 permit applications from Missouri between late February and March 4, when officials stopped accepting new inquiries."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

In the past three months, violent incidents at 12 of the most dangerous schools in New York City have declined by nearly 9 percent, the Associated Press reported March 25.

According to the Department of Education, there was an average of 3.3 violent crimes at the schools in November and December, which fell to an average of 3.02 in January, February, and March.

During the same time period, the number of citations for non-criminal incidents rose 72 percent, from 8.6 to 14.8.

The trends are attributed to Mayor Michael Bloomberg's decision to put more police officers in those schools.

-------
So, people who are armed tend to suppress violence. We know that. The question is, why must they be cops, when there's a lesser crime rate among ordinary citizens with concealed firearms?

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by the gradual and silent encroachment of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpation. — James Madison
