“Someday you’ll wish you’d taken these lessons more seriously,” my mother admonished. Her words still ring in my ears, and she was right. She was talking about dancing lessons and, today, I do wish I’d taken those lessons more seriously. But, at the age of 6, the impudence and ignorance of youth prevailed. My interest in shooting guns overrode my mother’s desire for me to dance or take art lessons. In spite of not heeding her desire for me to be a professional dancer (I coulda been somebody!) I’ve been pretty lucky when it comes to the experiences I’ve had, the places I’ve lived and the things I’ve done. But even so, there are still activities I do wish I’d learned correctly from the beginning. Take shooting, for example.

But the Legislature is only about halfway through its annual session. Much more is on the 2017 Oklahoma Legislature's agenda before it is required to adjourn on May 26, including raising teacher pay, modifying guidelines for the judiciary and criminal justice, abortion and ways to raise new revenue.

You may have gathered we’ve been on the road this week to take advantage of a rare opportunity—shooting with the some of the very best at USPSA’s first all-optics “Nationals.” Competition at this level is always an education, and quite often of the drinking-from-a-fire-hose variety. We made it through with a pistol caliber carbine without any egregious mishaps of our own making, and our gear had a lot to do with that. Few things are more distracting than “not-bang,” and we had none of that malarkey over two long days, 20 stages and 481 rounds.
