The U.S. Justice Department said Thursday it has opened an investigation into the Los Angeles Sheriff Department's purported extremely slow processing of concealed handgun license applications.
The department's announcement comes in the wake of a 2023 lawsuit by Second Amendment advocates, including the California Rifle & Pistol Association, who claimed it takes more than a year to obtain a concealed carry permit from the LASD for otherwise law-abiding citizens. |

Republican lawmakers are pushing to stop states from imposing excise taxes on gun and ammunition sales, a condemnation of a measure California enforced in 2024.
In 2023, California became the first state toadopt a measure imposing an excise tax targeting the gun industry. The legislation sets an 11% excise tax on guns and ammunition sales and directs the revenue toward gun relinquishment programs and other gun control initiatives.
Colorado is also poised to impose a 6.5% excise tax on similar purchases in April. Other states like Maryland, New York and Massachusetts are considering similar pieces of legislation. |

Gov. Glenn Youngkin isn’t the most outspoken of governors. He just quietly does what he does in Virginia, even with a hostile legislature that seems determined to make the Old Dominion State one of the most anti-gun in the nation. In fact, they sent a pile of gun control bills to him, which would be bad news for Virginia residents like our dear, old Cam Edwards. But, well, it seems that he wasn’t interested in playing along.

Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) is reintroducing the Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today (SHORT) Act on Thursday to remove onerous restrictions on short-barreled rifles, shotguns, and other firearms.
The bill would amend the Internal Revenue Code if 1986 and remove these firearms from the National Firearms Act (NFA) classification. If passed, it would rescind the extra restrictions and taxes imposed on those who own these weapons. |

A new bill working its way through the Texas Legislature could change the way self-defense cases are handled in civil court. House Bill 170, known as Kyle’s Law, was recently heard by the House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee, and supporters say it’s about protecting responsible gun owners from being financially ruined for defending themselves.
Authored by Representative Ryan Guillen (R–Rio Grande City), the bill is designed to prevent law-abiding Texans from facing costly lawsuits after they’re cleared of criminal wrongdoing in self-defense cases. The bill would apply to individuals who are not indicted by a grand jury, have charges dismissed, or are found not guilty at trial. |

The federal Department of Justice says it has launched an investigation into whether the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department is violating people’s gun rights with excessive fees and wait times for concealed carry permits.
The DOJ announced Thursday afternoon that it was opening an investigation into the Sheriff’s Department’s possible abuse of Second Amendment rights, part of a broader review of “restrictive firearms-related laws” in California and other states. |

Maine’s Democratic legislators have returned once again to one of their favorite legislative priorities: cracking down on Second Amendment rights. Multiple bills came before the Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, including a ban on magazines that hold more than ten rounds.
“From the Las Vegas Music Festival to the Pulse Night Club in Orlando, to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut, to Lewiston, Maine, the common denominator connecting these and dozens of other mass shootings in the United States is that the gunmen loaded their firearms with large capacity magazines,” said Rep. Matthew Beck (D-South Portland), presenting his bill during a public hearing on Wednesday. |

The Missouri House on Thursday passed a bill that would reenact a controversial gun rights law a federal court previously struck down as unconstitutional.
The legislature first passed the Second Amendment Preservation Act in 2021. The law would penalize Missouri police for enforcing federal gun laws.
That would include any federal laws intended to track, register, limit or control the sale or ownership of firearms.
Supporters of the bill say it protects Second Amendment rights and asserts Missouri’s rights as a state. Rep. Bill Hardwick, R-Dixon, is the sponsor of the legislation. |

The investigation will review whether the sheriff's department is denying Californians' gun rights with "expensive fees and lengthy wait times" on permits.
The DOJ cited a lawsuit in federal court where two private plaintiffs challenged the 18-month delay that the LASD imposed when processing their concealed handgun license application. The department added that they believe there may be more residents in Los Angeles County experiencing similar delays. |

The Constitution is hard to overturn, therefore the Second Amendment was never going to be taken away and people are still granted their freedom. All some Americans have asked for is to enforce stronger laws when buying a gun and raise the age to help stop the rise of school shootings.
I know some guns used in school shootings are taken from home, but some people are over 18 who come back to hurt students.
Students are dying because of how easy it is to access a gun in the U.S. |

The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, H.R. 38, has taken a major step toward becoming a reality by advancing out of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on an 18-9 party-line vote, with Democrats predictably opposed.
As noted by the Buckeye Firearms Association, “The legislation would allow concealed carry permit holders, authorized by their home state, to carry a concealed firearm in other states provided they comply with the law in other states — much in the same way a driver’s license is recognized.” |

Oregon Democrats are pushing forward a bill that would enact sweeping changes to the state’s gun laws.
If passed, Senate Bill 243 would create a 72-hour waiting period for gun buyers between when a dealer requests a criminal background check from the Oregon State Police and when the purchaser is approved to receive the weapon.
The bill would also ban rapid-fire devices, such as bump stocks and other attachments that make semi-automatic rifles shoot more rapidly. It would make it illegal for Oregonians under the age of 21 to purchase semi-automatic weapons, and it would give local governments the authority to decide firearm rules in public buildings. |

The Florida House voted Wednesday to allow people under 21 to buy rifles and long guns, but the bill must still pass the Senate before it becomes law.
The Republican-led chamber passed the bill (HB 759) in a 78-34 vote, despite emotional opposition from lawmakers who argued the measure would break a promise made to the families of the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. The bill’s fate in the Senate remains uncertain, as similar repeal efforts in 2023 and 2024 failed to gain traction in the upper chamber. |

Last month, President Donald Trump issued an executive order that might prove to be one of the most significant actions ever taken by any administration to protect Americans’ Second Amendment rights. Among other things, the order instructs Attorney General Pam Bondi to thoroughly review all existing executive branch policies and regulations involving firearms to identify and eliminate any that are “designed to curtail the clear right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.”
The order also called for a review of all legal positions taken by the federal government in ongoing Second Amendment-related litigation, to ensure that such positions are consistent with safeguarding the right to keep and bear arms. |

...Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has called on Creality 3D Technology Co. and other desktop 3D printer manufacturers to help stop the spread of ghost guns.
A warning came in a letter Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg sent Thursday asking the companies to make fixes to stop the proliferation of ghost guns on city streets. The letter pointed out that last year, Luigi Mangione allegedly used a 3D printed ghost gun and silencer to murder United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Bragg said he sent the letter because “a growing and concerning number” of ghost guns are manufactured by personal desktop 3D printers based on downloadable gun part designs and detailed assembly guides found on the “Creality Cloud.” |
