Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced Monday that he would no longer order or recommend that gun stores be closed as part of the county’s “safer at home” order. The reversal was the second time Villanueva announced businesses dealing in firearms and ammunition may reopen, after he twice ordered them to close since last Tuesday.

Along with supermarkets and pharmacies, Gov. Gina Raimondo in an executive order dubbed gun shops as “critical retail businesses” over the weekend, thus allowing them to keep their storefronts open to foot traffic (with certain precautions in place).
But why ¯ in the midst of a worldwide pandemic that seemingly necessitates stocked refrigerators and medicine cabinets ¯ are firearms stores, too, considered “critical”?

Technological advances in ammunition have hastened in recent years, and those changes have enabled us to re-evaluate beliefs regarding firearm suitability for a given task. Nowhere is this more evident than with turkey hunting. High-performance turkey loads, such as Winchester Long Beard XR; Federal Premium Heavyweight TSS; Apex Ammunition Turkey TSS; and Browning TSS Tungsten Turkey, among many others, have redefined the effective range and lethality of all gauges—especially sub-gauges. Frankly, the omnipresent 12 gauge is no longer necessary for dropping toms at practical distances; the sub-gauges, housed in lighter, more maneuverable shotguns, generate less recoil and are well-suited for the boisterous springtime birds.

Idaho Fish and Game has not closed any fishing or hunting seasons in response to COVID-19, and the department is providing guidelines in accordance with the Governor’s orders for social distancing at least six feet apart, including while fishing and at access sites and boat ramps. “Fishing lends itself to social distancing,” Fish and Game State Fisheries Manager Jim Fredericks said. “In fact, for most types of fishing, general etiquette says if you’re fishing within six feet of the next person, you’re way too close.”

Although this is all about me, others are involved. Mom and Dad are biologists. Mom is a wildlife biologist, Dad is a general something-or-other biologist. Both teach at the University of North Dakota. Both have the letters “PhD” — Piled Higher and Deeper — after their names on science-type papers. Mom and Dad are very active outdoors people. They go to Churchill, Canada to band geese and avoid Big White Bears. They both are avid hunters. They go into the swamps down south somewhere to kill feral hogs, tasty and invasive things.

Let’s have some fun during the COVID pandemic by starting some arguments. This time, the 6 Most Overrated Calibers. People make a huge to-do about certain calibers, and they just aren’t the greatest thing since sliced bread in the real world. Just as with anything else in the gun world, the people that rant and rave about them won’t shut up and making those people upset is just good fun.

The Super Shock Tip (SST) is a bullet style created by Hornady and is used in a variety of their rifle rounds. All of the most common centerfire calibers, from .243 to .308, are offered with the SST bullet. This particular bullet is quite popular among reloaders because it’s high-quality polymer tipped and has an expanding bullet that is extremely versatile. It can be used for everything – from backyard shooting to varmint control to big-game hunting – and the boat-tail design makes it relatively easy for reloaders to work with.

Give someone power if you want to see their character. Unfortunately, the usual characters have revealed themselves during the Wuhan virus epidemic. Government officials asked citizens to limit their contact with others in order to slow the spread of the virus. Some government officials went well beyond that. They closed roads, released jail inmates, refused to arrest or prosecute suspects, closed gun stores, and refused to process firearms applications.

A limited number of authentic Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE), or No. 1 Mark III, rifles are being offered for sale by Century Arms (centuryarms.com) through Bud’s Gun Shop (budsgunshop.com) to support the NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA, nraila.org). The Ishapore SMLEs chambered in .303 British are around 100 years old, and are likely veterans of World War I and other military actions of the British Empire. Upon being retired from active service, the rifles continued their military careers as decommissioned—non-firing—training and education arms, and are therefore marked “DP,” for “Drill Purposes,” to denote their intended use.

At a time when our nation struggles, everyone’s first and foremost concern is the safety of themselves and their loved ones. However, this doesn't stop Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) from pushing a massive gun grab bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would leave law-abiding Americans defenseless. Rep. Johnson's bill, H.R. 5717, the Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act, is nothing "new" or "innovative" for the gun control crowd in Congress. As we reported on failed presidential candidate and Senator Elizabeth Warren's (D-MA) companion bill earlier this year, Rep. Johnson took the same route of copying proposals already offered by his colleagues in Congress and packaged them into one bill with his name on it. Very bold.

As the COVID-19 pandemic makes its way across the country, Americans are getting an important lesson in the dangers of placing a prior restraint on the exercise of a constitutional right. The vast increase in those seeking protection in the Second Amendment during this period of uncertainty has caused the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and Point of Contact State background check systems to buckle. Worse, some jurisdictions that have criminalized the private transfer of firearms have also shut down access to gun stores or their state criminal background check system.

Just as grocery stores have been stripped bare by Americans concerned by coronavirus, guns and ammunition have started flying off the shelves, the Associated Press (AP) reported on March 16. Retailers say the buying frenzy is being fueled by consumers who are worried that people are becoming so desperate and unpredictable, they need to ensure they can protect themselves.

Northwoods Sporting Goods – Freeman’s Gun Shop in Hancock has experienced the same jump in sales.

Rick Freeman, Jr. said the shop will remain open in the forseeable future, although he will extremely limit face-to-face business and conduct curbside pickup.

The Hall County Sheriff's Department has seen a 15 to 20 percent increase in applications for firearm permits. Hall County Sheriff Rick Conrad said on average, they're getting ten a month now. "I don't know if it's a panic thing or what. I mean why are people buying up all the toilet paper and sanitizer? I don't know why it's gotten to this point. I don't see the need for it, but people always have their second amendment rights," Conrad said.

They were ultimately joined by the New Jersey Second Amendment Society, Legacy Indoor Range and Armory LLC and the Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC), Racing Rails LLC d/b/a Legend Firearms and several private citizens. Plaintiffs were represented by noted civil rights attorney David Jensen of New York and Adam Kraut of California.
