"A Wisconsin man [David Olofson] sent to prison for having a malfunctioning semi-automatic rifle is awaiting word from the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals on whether he'll have to serve the rest of his 30-month term." ...

"The focal point of the case was the malfunctioning weapon, which Olofson had loaned to an acquaintance. The transaction prompted federal charges for transferring a 'machine gun.'"

"According to the government, Titus said, 'Olofson's malfunctioning semi-automatic rifle functioned as a machine gun because it fired more than one shot at the single pull of a trigger.'" ...

"... 'What mattered was the government's position that ... 'If you pull the trigger once and it fires more than one round, no matter what the cause it's a machine gun.'" [emphasis added] ...

According to the article and numerous other television and print reports, the war between Mexican drug cartels and law enforcement is spilling into the United States. In fact, Phoenix, Arizona was recently declared the kidnapping capital of the United States, second only to Mexico City worldwide."

"Given the possibility that people perceived as 'liberals' will be targeted for future politically inspired violence ... a question urges itself upon us: Why aren't liberals ... reconsidering their opposition to the right to armed self-defense? Body armor used by police has been able to stop handgun rounds and saved thousands of lives over the last three decades, the study states, but standard body armor cannot stop rifle rounds."

"Tennessee is not yet the worst state for lax gun laws, but it's not for lack of trying. Like more than a dozen other states bunched at the bottom of the heap with laws that encourage easy access and use of guns, our state Legislature keeps pushing the envelope for new ways to loosen our already stretched gun laws."

"Legislators are now sponsoring a collection of three bills that would allow people with permits to carry concealed guns to take their guns into bars and state and local parks and wildlife areas. A fourth proposes to end public access to the state’s list of citizens who have obtained permits to carry concealed weapons, known as CCW permits, and to make publication of such information illegal and subject to a $2,500 fine." ...

"A question I get asked a lot, one I was asked last night in fact, is 'where can I go to shoot?' In northern Ohio especially, indoor ranges can be hard to come by. Even outdoor ranges, though, tend to be mostly private ranges for hunt clubs. Practicing your shooting skills is important, especially considering that Ohio's concealed handgun license program is still going strong, with an estimated 34,000 licenses being issued in Ohio last year, bringing the total to around 140,000 issued since inception."

"One seemingly well kept secret is that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources maintains 35 public shooting ranges across Ohio at a number of parks and wildlife areas for archery, rifle, shotgun and pistol target shooting." ...

"And the question is loyalty to whom? The biggest complaint of constituents in self-rule is the official assumption of powers not granted. The second is being sold out, and it’s clear that some officials have sold us all out. The only way the Republicans are going to be different this time around is if they are loyal to the country and constituents and not to themselves as a party any longer. Follow the law, respect gun rights, and the rest will take care of itself."

"When I first coined the term Liberty Nuts, I was mocking the critics who castigate liberty writers for their content. We had been called Constitution Nuts, Preparedness Nuts, Gold and Silver Nuts, Gun Nuts, Privacy Nuts.. All sorts of derogatory terms because some disagree. We were called Nuts because some feared that we might be heard and read, and they had no real response. The key was to portray liberty or independence persons as isolationist and eccentric. Our modern culture seeks to create sheep; Folks who go along to get along, seek compromise and accommodation. Political correctness tells us not to offend anyone. "I touched briefly on this back in late January, but there have been enough recent developments on defensive handgun carry in Illinois to warrant another, deeper look. Although such a change in Illinois law still faces a steep climb, the perception is that chances are better than they have been in many years. One reason for the improvement of the odds is the expulsion of Governor (ex-Governor, actually) Rod Blagojevich. Like many other grotesquely corrupt Chicago politicians, Blagojevich had a passion for citizen disarmament, and any carry law that reached his desk would have been vetoed just as fast as he could reach his pen. Governor Quinn ... at least hasn't made onerous gun laws a cornerstone of his policies. ..." ...
