"With more than four out of five states allowing law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons, that argument is finished. Now, the nation's long-running argument over guns turns on how much to loosen the rules -- should guns be allowed in judge's chambers? Bars? In workplace parking lots?"

Patriot Act: Facts emerge from the shadows

"President Bush calls the Patriot Act an invaluable tool in the war on terror, but, until last week, little was known about where, why or how often the law has been applied." ...

"But few cases of actual abuse of the law have surfaced. No one, for example, has come forward to claim the compensation provided in the law for abuse of civil rights. One reason, critics say, is that the most invasive powers of the Patriot Act are exercised secretly, some accompanied with gag orders. That means that a librarian, for example, who discloses a request for records under the Patriot Act could be subject to criminal prosecution."

"Because their focus is so narrow, their leaders pay painstakingly close attention to potential legislation or initiatives that might otherwise be overlooked in the myriad streams of information that clog one's daily life. ..."

"But ours has become a nation of people too quick to demonize others for the stands they take if they run contrary to our own beliefs."

"I think the Brady Center for the Prevention of Gun Violence is wrong on scores of gun-related issues, but that doesn't make Sarah Brady evil."

"I'll continue to fight for the Second Amendment rights of Americans. I just won't do it as a member of the NRA."

"Somewhat ironically, during the time period of apartheid, whites had few restrictions on being able to get guns, large numbers were armed, and gun-related crime was relatively low. Alex Holmes, of South Africa’s Arms and Ammunition Dealers Association, says the government has to realize that 'the real problem is from 30-40,000 hardcore criminals using a small amount of illegal guns.' He added, 'Licensed guns are not used in crime at any great rate.' "

"Once again, gun control advocates are overlooking the common-sense aspect of crime, and they’re failing to acknowledge that to control crime, criminals must be controlled, not law-abiding citizens. ..."

"Hlateef Darlington, who admitted he shot a man in Easton but said he acted in self-defense, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and was placed on probation." ...

"Jenkins said Friday he agreed to drop the more serious charges because Darlington, who had a permit to carry a handgun, said he had acted in self-defense and fired only after he was approached by Bryson and several other men."

"Bryson, Jenkins said, is under federal indictment in New York on a drug matter, and Darlington has no criminal record. Jenkins said Bryson and the people who were with him have 'very checkered pasts and violent tendencies. It would have been difficult to prove at trial that Darlington didn't act in self-defense.' "What do the area's two top cops have to say about the possibility of more women seeking to protect themselves by buying, and learning how to use, firearms?"

" 'I would never object to a law-abiding citizen exercising his or her right to carry a firearm,' Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork said, 'but I would approach it with an abundant amount of caution.' "

"Jackson Police Department Chief Rick Staples was even more blunt."

" 'There are many ways for people to learn how to defend themselves, and you don't want to see anyone live in fear,' he said. 'We all have a right to protect ourselves ... but our jails are full of women who've killed a spouse, and they were unable to prove it was self-defense.' "

It is proven that the supervised youth hunting experience is exponentially safer than competitive sports, and it can be argued hunting is much more redeeming for its ethics, family bonding and educational value."

"Federal officials must respond to a subpoena and release gun-tracing data to New York City even though a provision in a recently enacted appropriations bill might protect such information in the future, a federal trial court in New York ruled April 1. The ruling is the latest in a labyrinth of legal moves in the city's lawsuit against gun manufacturers and distributors."

"The city sued gun manufacturers and distributors in 2002 for alleged negligence in diverting guns into illegal markets catering to juveniles and criminals. City officials subpoenaed records -- including firearms tracing data -- from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in April 2004. The city hoped that tracing a gun's chain of possession from its use in a crime to its initial purchase from a gun manufacturer or distributor would shed light on gun trafficking, according to court records."

"This fight already is lost, because the governor says he will sign the bill into law. But it is not too late to ask a few questions. Why did most Democrats cave to the notion that it is bad politics to fight the gun lobby when this bill creates opportunities for more violence, not less? Why did sheriffs and prosecutors lose their voices? Why didn't other police chiefs raise concerns like St. Petersburg's Chuck Harmon did after the bill passed?"

"This legislation was not needed. Current law clearly gives citizens the right to defend themselves in their own home and to respond to danger elsewhere with deadly force if nothing else works. But now we will all feel free to fight rather than retreat when we feel threatened. Too bad that doctrine will apply only in the streets and not in the Florida Legislature."
