"Like a courtroom version of 'High Noon,' legal guns are squaring off this year in a confrontation over the Second Amendment."

"And whoever wins, the battle will touch off a longtime culture war that rivals Roe v. Wade, said National Rifle Association (NRA) President Sandra Froman in an April 5 visit to Harvard." ...

"The debate over firearms, and how to interpret the 27 words of the Second Amendment, carries the same power to divide, according to Froman, a 1974 graduate of Harvard Law School (HLS). Her evening lecture in Langdell Hall, 'The Right to Keep and Bear Arms: What’s the State of Second Amendment Law?' was sponsored by the Harvard Law School Forum." ...

"The first quarter of 2007 has come to an end, and we saw two important gun bills introduced at the federal level. They both would have a profound effect on our Second Amendment rights. One bill is all about freedom and the other is all about control. Since both of these bills are important, all Second Amendment activists must be fully informed about H.R. 1096 and H.R.1022."

"The first quarter of this year saw no slowdown in the collectible firearms trade. Year after year the desire to own classic arms, and the prices people are willing to pay, have continued their upward curve. The major firearms auction houses consistently attract plenty of bidders, many paying whatever it takes to add a gem or two to their collections."

"Here's a sampling of some of the auction action this year. All prices include the buyer’s premium." ...

"Mitt Romney is in St. Louis today hunting for campaign cash, but Show Me State voters are wondering whether he plans to show his face at the National Rifle Association's 136th Annual Meetings & Exhibits while he's in town."

"Last week, Romney tried to smooth talk gun owners into ignoring his record by telling a New Hampshire audience that he has 'been a hunter pretty much all my life,' even though he has never held a hunting license and his own staff acknowledged that he 'had been on only two hunting trips.' ... Rather than explain why he tried to mislead the voters, Romney continues to joke about the situation ..." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A woman in a trailer park shot a dog that she claimed was attacking her while she got out of her car Wednesday night.

The woman, who lives out on Howells Mill Road, reported to Cabell County Sheriff’s that two German shepherd dogs approached her near her vehicle and became very aggressive.

Officers said the woman apparently shot one of the dogs with a .38 revolver, leaving it wounded and causing the other one to run off at the time of the report.

No arrests were made and the owners of the dogs were not present at the time.

The woman and neighborhood witnesses told officers that the landlord has warned the owners about leaving their dogs without a leash. Officers notified Animal Control about the two dogs.

"The National Rifle Association is not known for restraint when they see a piece of legislation as an attack on gun owners or the right to own firearms."

"That tendency often leaves them to go overboard where such a threat is perceived but does not actually exist."

"Then along comes an example of lawmakers' mischief such as Pennsylvania House Bill 760 -- containing enough silly restrictions as to make even a middling gun control supporter give a salute to the Second Amendment."

"H.B. 760 is more than overreaching legislative tyranny. It's stupid and insulting."

"The viewpoint from the inner city is that gun violence is rampant and strong measures are needed to control the number of firearms on the street. In more rural areas ... the measure will be seen as a blatant assault on Second Amendment rights and an attempt to penalize and harass law-abiding citizens who use their guns for hunting and target shooting as well as self-protection." ...

"You might not like what Sheriff Bill Brown of Santa Barbara County has to say, but he is honest and direct about it. Which makes you wonder why the NRA gave an 'A' rating to a man who makes it clear he’s proud that he has given out only three concealed-carry permits in his many years of service. I met with Sheriff Brown on March 9 to appeal the denial of my application to renew the active gun permit I've had for more than 10 years. I am licensed to carry a concealed, loaded weapon in 32 other states."

"Sheriff Brown was diplomatic enough to hear me out. However, he both denied my renewal and very clearly and unambiguously laid out a policy for a de facto concealed-carry ban in Santa Barbara County ..." ...

"A 15 year old shot Tuesday in Jackson County is home now. Police say the victim and his 15-year-old friend found a gun inside of a home in Munith. Police believe while the teens were playing with the gun, it went off, hitting the injured boy in the shoulder. FULL TEXT BELOW:

Columnist Cynthia Tucker is being worse than disengenious when she claims that there is a gun lobby "insist(ing) that there should be no laws regulating gun use" ("Nation's love affair with guns 'deadly,' " April 10 column).

She is also well aware that the leading lobbying organization, the National Rifle Association, has never advocated anything approaching "a howitzer in every home."

What supporters of Second Amendment rights universally call for is that the 271 federal gun laws already on the books be vigorously enforced.

Noel Funchess

Submitter's Note: This "supporter of Second Amendment rights" calls for all those unConstitutional laws to be stricken from the books.
