Is cross burning ever free speech?

"But that turns history on its head. Adolph Hitler and the Nazis exploited hate speech during the Weimar Republic to poison the minds of the German electorate and to capture the Reichstag. And then came the end of free speech and the Jews. Cross burners in the United States, whether or not they intend to intimidate, aim at a similar grisly chapter for blacks and speech celebrating equal rights. Why should the risk that they might succeed, no matter how tiny, be accepted when cross burnings make no contribution to civilized discourse?"

"The ability to determine one's own destiny, for good or bad, for better or worse, is as much the definition of freedom as any. I know that this definition may seem flawed by the fact that some may choose to do badly to others. I am not so naive to believe that there is no line of demarcation between this freedom and another person's freedom. In fact, unlike most of my peers ... I believe there is only one line that a person cannot cross without destroying freedom."

Nevermind that the "assault weapons" ban is still in effect and did nothing to prevent this "tragedy." And nevermind that this was a gang-related shooting. Brady will take any opportunity to try and shove this ban down our throats.

Judges already have that power when issuing permanent protection-from-abuse orders."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Those, who have the command of the arms in a country are masters of the state, and have it in their power to make what revolutions they please. [Thus,] there is no end to observations on the difference between the measures likely to be pursued by a minister backed by a standing army, and those of a court awed by the fear of an armed people. Aristotle, as quoted by John Trenchard and Water Moyle, An Argument Shewing, That a Standing Army Is Inconsistent with a Free Government, and Absolutely Destructive to the Constitution of the English Monarchy [London, 1697].
