When I ask Carrie Lightfoot to describe the most utopian and expansive version of the America she’s working towards, this is what she says: Obviously there’d be less crime, because criminals are lazy, and if all women had guns they would no longer be considered prey.
Incidents of domestic violence would go down, too—not necessarily because more abusers would get blasted, but because education begets confidence, which breeds independence and the strength to walk away. The fearless self-reliance incubated in women who were trained to be “educated self-protectors” would reverberate through society, smashing glass ceilings and counteracting the forces that turn women into nothing but objects of sex. |

Now a bill introduced earlier this year in the U.S. House, called the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, would nullify state gun safety laws pertaining to concealed carry (carrying a hidden — presumably loaded — gun on one’s person). Representative Dent is a co-sponsor.
Dent is dead wrong on this one. Concealed carry reciprocity is dangerous.
Federal concealed carry reciprocity forces states to reciprocate other states’ concealed carry permit laws — no matter how lax or ineffective. Its effect will be to make the least restrictive state’s concealed carry permit criteria the law of the land. |

A Pierce County, Washington, homeowner fired one shot early Saturday morning, killing a home invasion suspect who had allegedly forced his way into the home.
The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m.
According to The News Tribune, the homeowner awoke to strange noises on his front porch, grabbed his gun, and went to investigate. Upon reaching the porch, he was allegedly confronted by 28-year-old Viktor Starovevrov. The homeowner fired one shot, killing Starovevrov. |

Mike Sharkey, owner of The Gun House in St. Joseph, said there is a correlation to gun sales and background checks. However, Sharkey said sales at his shop have been steady.
“It hasn’t been crazy like it was before, but steady,” Sharkey said. “There was a big push for guns leading up to the election because if (Democratic nominee) Hilary (Clinton) got elected, there would be more restrictions on guns. Hillary wanted to take guns away like Australia. That was a concern to the consumer.”
Once Donald Trump was elected to the Oval Office, Sharkey said those “sales of concern” went down. Despite the lack of urgency among gun owners, Sharkey said sales have remained steady because of gun hobbyists. |

As part “L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later” by the A&E network, Joo spoke about the flashpoint in American history sparked in the aftermath of the Rodney King trial.

ADOT crews worked to clear up a gun safe that fell off the back of a truck on southbound I-17 Sunday morning.
Multiple guns and debris scattered across the freeway between Dunlap and Northern caused some backing up of traffic.
According to Arizona DPS, troopers were on-scene and reported several guns and several rounds of loose ammunition in the roadway. |

The Supreme Court could also agree to hear Peruta v. San Diego, giving Gorsuch the opportunity to weigh in on a controversial Second Amendment case that looks at whether law-abiding citizens can conceal-carry outside the home for self-defense when open carry is forbidden by state law.
San Diego resident Edward Peruta sued the county in 2009 after his application was for a concealed-carry license was denied by the sheriff's office, which is responsible for deciding whether someone has “good cause” to carry a firearm.
The case made its way to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which said in a divided opinion that there is no constitutional right to carry concealed weapons in public. |

A small group of pro-gun Ohioans staged an “open-carry/firearm education walk” through uptown Athens early Saturday afternoon at the same time and general location as the annual International Street Fair.
While news of the planned walk sparked substantial anger and consternation on social media Friday evening and Saturday morning, the visibly armed open-carry group, with five armed participants (and one pulling a wagon containing two children), walked through the crowded Street Fair with minimal incident and no reported disruptions or counter-protests. |

From Fort Hood, Texas to Aurora, Colo. to Newtown, Conn., to the Washington Navy Yard to Charleston, S. C., to Orlando, Fla., we have borne witness to far too many mass shootings in our nation. But mass shootings are only a small part of a much larger issue. Each year 32,000 die as a result of gun violence, while another 75,000 are injured.
This is a uniquely American problem. There is no other advanced country with comparable rates of gun violence. We have ample data and evidence to enact effective policy solutions that would make our communities safer, but lawmakers choose instead to give individuals nearly unfettered access to firearms. |

Almost a dozen Delawareans showed off their skills Sunday morning in a pistol challenge at Nanticoke's Sportsman Club in Seaford.
The challenge's organizer David Elliott says, "The steel challenge is basically a national thing and we shoot steel plates and have fun doing it."
He tells 47 ABC it's all about how fast you can shoot each target, which are stationed at different lengths and heights, at each of the four stations. |

Gun owners could have their firearms taken under a controversial plan to keep weapons out of the hands of people who are mentally ill or deemed dangerous.
The legislation, if approved, would allow police, health care workers, family members and others to ask a judge to issue an “extreme risk protection order” allowing police to revoke the firearms license, for up to a year, of someone considered a danger to himself or others.
Police could seize firearms belonging to that person, as well.
Gun control advocates say the measure, modeled on domestic violence protection orders that have been on the books for decades, will reduce gun violence and suicides that claim tens of thousands of lives each year. |

President Trump will speak at the National Rifle Association’s leadership forum during this year’s annual meeting later this month, the gun lobby said Friday.
Trump’s appearance at the show will mark the first time a sitting president has appeared at the event since Ronald Reagan.
The NRA was one of the few mainstream organizations to endorse Trump for president. The group’s leaders named Trump over other Republican candidates during primary elections at last year’s meeting. The group would go on to spend more than $30 million last year supporting the billionaire businessman’s campaign. |

For almost an hour during a House committee meeting about two weeks ago, legislators, law enforcement officials and advocates on both sides of the gun rights issue debated a hypothetical situation that could play out anywhere in Tennessee.
The scenario goes something like this: A Tennessean with no handgun carry permit, of any description, walks into a fast food restaurant with a gun on their hip, in a jacket or purse. A customer in the store, uncomfortable with the gun being around, calls the police. |

The Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) is poised to hold campus conversations in the fall on whether to arm campus police - or not - and one statewide group is already opposed.
As GoLocal reported in March, the prospect of arming campus police was broached at a recent CCRI “Health and Safety Committee” meeting.
Now, the ACLU of Rhode Island is already speaking out against the arming of campus police, after those meeting minutes showed that the administration is considering making such a move, contingent on the input of the college community. |

State Rep. Charlie Collins' new law allowing concealed handguns for specially trained permit holders on campus won't take effect until Sept. 1, so the trustees are simply maintaining the status quo. Many campus leaders across the state want nothing but the status quo, but the Legislature thought differently.
Come Sept. 1 any concealed carry permit holder can take new training to earn an enhanced permit. That permit will allow him to carry a handgun in several places where concealed handguns were formerly banned. People with a non-enhanced permit won't be legally authorized to carry their weapons in these newly authorized locations. |
