Vice President Biden has waded into the Trayvon Martin controversy by calling for a national debate on gun control; meanwhile the Brady Campaign continues its shameless publicity campaign with a truly disgusting “Americans for the Freedom to Buy Skittles Without Getting Shot” petition. The Vice President seeks to capitalize politically on the teenager’s tragic death, while the Brady Campaign tries to bring in supporters and cold hard cash. While neither of these efforts should surprise anyone, it is an indication of how far the Administration and the anti-gun lobby are willing to go. |

But that's when things took a twist on Thursday when the state senate's public safety committee replaced the bill with a non-permit based bill that would only require a training course.
"It's a pretty short bill that simply says individuals, without needing a self-defense act license, may open-carry a handgun if they've gone through the instructional program," said O'Shea.
And O'Shea thinks there are some key parts that are missing from the bill.
"It doesn't have any language about preempting municipal disorderly misconduct ordinances, which have been used I think abusively in other states, to harass lawful open carriers," said O'Shea. |

The Democrats continue to try to make political hay out of the Trayvon Martin case. The Hill reports that House Democrats–all members of the Congressional Black Caucus–are proposing a package of legislative “reforms” arising out of the Martin case:
In the wake of the slaying of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, House Democrats are drafting legislation designed to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Actually, there are plenty of laws in every state to deter and punish murder and manslaughter, if that is, in fact, what happened in the Martin case. Such statutes are a matter of state, not federal, law. |

The high-profile shooting death of an unarmed Florida teenager by a neighborhood watch captain has prompted rallies and protests across the country, including in Oklahoma, but state leaders say it won’t affect the push for greater gun rights in Oklahoma.
While officials in some states, like Florida, are taking a closer look at gun laws that allow the use of deadly force, Oklahoma lawmakers want to expand an individual’s ability to openly carry a gun in public.
“I don’t think that the laws that we have on the books here in Oklahoma or the laws that we’re considering really have any connection with the event that happened in Florida,” said House Speaker Kris Steele, R-Shawnee. |

As State Attorney Angela Corey begins her investigation into the death of Sanford teenager Trayvon Martin amid the furor that has arisen over the “Stand Your Ground” law, which allows using deadly force instead of retreating, one longstanding case is working its way through the courts in Jacksonville.
The case of Quintavis Seay is among the one or two that come up monthly in the circuit, according to Corey’s office.
Seay has been in the Duval County jail since December 2009, charged with second-degree murder after shooting at three brothers who jumped him and a friend in retaliation for an earlier fight. One of the brothers, 20-year-old Jeremy Ervin Godboldt, was killed. |

The problem, of course, was not the gun laws in Florida. If Zimmerman shot in self-defense and is not prosecuted, the gun laws saved his life; if Zimmerman shot without proper provocation, he violated the relevant Florida gun laws. The law itself isn’t to blame, any more than insider trading laws are to blame when somebody violates them.
Beyond that, Biden’s bizarre notion that concealing and carrying guns doesn’t provide additional security is plainly nonsensical. |

The National Association for Legal Gun Defense wants to contribute $10,000 toward George Zimmerman's legal expenses, a member said today.
The group represents gun owners involved in self-defense shooting cases, said attorney Blue Rannefeld of Fort Worth, Texas.
Rannefeld said he has not been able to contact Zimmerman, 28, and is trying to reach Zimmerman's attorney, Craig Sonner of Altamonte Springs to make the group's offer of assistance.

When he was shot, Trayvon Martin was not the baby-faced boy in the photo that has been on front pages across the country. And George Zimmerman wasn’t the beefy-looking figure in the widely published mugshot.
Both photos are a few years old and no longer entirely accurate. Yet they may have helped shape initial public perceptions of the deadly shooting.

Erik Wemple (The Washington Post) reports: NBC told this blog today that it would investigate its handling of a piece on the “Today” show that ham-handedly abridged the conversation between George Zimmerman and a dispatcher in the moments before the death of Trayvon Martin. A statement from NBC: “We have launched an internal investigation into the editorial process surrounding this particular story.” Here’s what appears to be the Today show’s version of what Zimmerman said: Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. New York gun owners finally have something to celebrate -- a rare double victory in the Empire State. The New York state budget was signed today by Governor Andrew Cuomo, and it eliminated CoBIS, the costly state ballistic identification database that wasted millions of taxpayer dollars while failing to solve a single crime. The final budget bill also struck a microstamping provision that had been included in an earlier Assembly version of the state budget. After the state Assembly passed microstamping earlier this session, the Senate Codes Committee moved S675C, by state Senator Jose Peralta (D-13), to the Senate Rules Committee, making it unlikely a hearing would be held on it this session. |

Following in line with their broadcast television colleagues who deliberately edited the audio of a 9-1-1 call of George Zimmerman, the Florida community watch volunteer who shot teenager Trayvon Martin, to falsely impute racist motives to him, MSNBC.com, in an unbylined piece did the exact same thing in text form, stripping out vital information which made Zimmerman appear to be racially motivated against Martin, who is black.
After being criticized, MSNBC.com restored the proper context but never posted a retraction, correction notice, or an apology for doing so.

Late last night, the Georgia General Assembly adjourned and with that, the door of opportunity to pass substantial pro-gun reforms was slammed shut. The potential for pro-gun legislation to pass in both chambers of the state legislature was very real and likely for this legislative session. But, due to the serious distrust between the members of both legislative bodies towards its opposite (despite being of the same political party) gun owners will now need to wait until next year for legislative efforts to protect and restore our Second Amendment rights. |

One man sits in jail for the second night after a bomb squad was called to his house Wednesday in Knox County. Police said what they found in his home could have caused lots of destruction.
The Kentucky State Police bomb squad and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, ATF, were called to a home in Knox County after several complaints of an obscene sign near the road.
"Of course everyone is passing by and seeing the sign there, it is obscene, rude," said Claude Hudson, Jr. a Knox County Sheriff's Deputy.
Hudson said the sign turned out to be just the beginning.

A township police sergeant has been suspended on charges he threatened to kill a man who had filed earlier complaints against him.
Sergeant Joseph McNally, 40, was suspended without pay Thursday after a Winslow Municipal Court Judge made a ruling of probable cause in two complaints filed against McNally for harassment and making terroristic threats, according to Waterford Township Police Lt. Dan Cormaney. The charges will now be reviewed by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, according to McNally’s attorney. ...
The complaint alleges McNally continued to harass Miller, with whom he has had past run-ins , and at one point told Miller; “Let’s go out back and I will beat you to death.” |

A man who bought guns legally in Colorado - but was arrested and slapped with a seven-year prison sentence for not having a permit to carry them [THEY WERE LOCKED IN THE TRUNK OF HIS CAR!] in New Jersey - had two of the three charges filed against him overturned by the state Supreme Court on Friday.
Brian Aitken was arrested on Jan. 2, 2009 after he angrily left his mother's house in Mount Laurel, N.J., and she called police, fearing that her son was suicidal after his ex-wife canceled his visitation session with their son, according to court documents.

A late night get-to-together at a home on Sally's Branch Rd. east of London took a terrible turn in the wee hours of Thursday morning. Police say Kevin McElrath, 25, was cleaning a .45 caliber pistol when it accidently went off.
"The victim thought the weapon was unloaded because he took the magazine out of the pistol and it accidently discharged," said Gilbert Acciardo, a spokesman with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.
That bullet hit McElrath in the head, killing him. But the bullet kept going…and struck 22 year old Eric Partain also in the head. He was airlifted to UK hospital in Lexington where he died Thursday afternoon according to the Lexington Herald Leader. |
