Cheney Supports Gun Control, And BuzzFlash Can Prove It!

"...Mr. Cheney, apparently, is ...a firm believer in gun control for himself."

"Now, how can BuzzFlash make this outrageous claim?"

"Well, easy. All the NRA gun guys who wanted to hear Mr. Cheney speak about God and Guns and Freedom and the evils of Gun Control had to leave their guns in their hotel rooms and go through metal detectors, among other screening procedures, before they could gain entry to the meeting hall where Cheney addressed them. In short, if you were an NRA member and wanted to hear Cheney, you had to go through gun control. In fact, security screening for Cheney started three hours in advance of his NRA speech."

"Many NRA members have not been happy with the Bush administration for its backing of the Patriot Act and the president's acknowledgment that he would continue the federal assault weapons ban that is due to expire in September."

" 'A lot of that is being drummed up by the media,' said NRA President Kayne Robinson. 'The NRA understands that we're at war and certain things need to be done, especially in a situation like this one. Now, certainly if we get three and four years down the road and certain parts of the Patriot Act are still in place, we may have something to say about it.' "

Certain provisions of the "Patriot" Act are supposed to sunset in 2005, but Bush apparently wants them permanent.

"That's the gospel according to Detroit rocker, zealous -- avid is an understatement -- hunter and NRA supporter Ted Nugent." ...

"Former Steelers running back Franco Harris, who had appeared at a Kerry rally at the University of Pittsburgh Friday, said he supported the Second Amendment but did not agree with the NRA leadership's assessment of Kerry."

" 'John Kerry really supports the Second Amendment,' Harris said. 'You can't have people putting fear and wrong information [out there].' "

-------
FYI, Franco, the Second Amendment says, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Do mandatory background checks infringe on the right to keep and bear arms?

What about limiting what kind of weapons you can purchase?

Why don't you look up the definition of "infringed," Franco?

INFRINGE, v.t. infrinj'. [L. infringo; in and frango,to break. See Break.]

1. To break, as contracts; to violate, either positively by contravention, or negatively by non-fulfillment or neglect of performance. A prince or a private person infringes an agreement or covenant by neglecting to perform its conditions, as well as by doing what is stipulated not to be done.

2. To break; to violate; to transgress; to neglect to fulfill or obey; as, to infringe a law.

3. To destroy or hinder; as, to infringe efficacy.

Last week, a writer called Lauren Flynn wrote an editorial about gun control. It was filled with every Brady and VPC talking point she could possibly dig up. Here is a reply.

-------
"My name is not 'Buford'. I am Jewish and reasonably well-educated (B.S., Cornell University; M.S., M.I.T.). My parents remembered the holocaust, and taught me what the Nazis did to unarmed and helpless Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto and the abattoirs of the camps."

"I am also a gun owner. I own ten handguns, two rifles, and a shotgun. In a temper of pure contrariness, I recently placed an order for an 'assault weapon'. Before obtaining this gun, I will undergo, for the 14th time, a background check by the Attorney General to certify that I am reasonably sane, have no criminal record, and am not a danger to myself or others. How this 14th certification will prevent crimes of passion is a mystery..."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office says 29-year-old Brice Hunter, a former wide receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was shot to death in the basement of a Chicago apartment building early yesterday morning.

Chicago police have filed a weapon charge against another South Side resident in the shooting.

Officers said 38-year-old Thomas Williams was charged with one misdemeanor count of failure to register a weapon. They said Williams was not charged with murder because the shooting appeared to have been done in self-defense. Officers said the shooting occurred after a neighbor complained about loud music coming from the building.

Hunter was pronounced dead less than an hour later at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

"Gun proponents say shootings decreased because of tougher sentencing for gun crimes and better training for gun owners. Some argue that more states allowed more people to carry concealed weapons, though the evidence that they've deterred shootings is anecdotal."

"Gun control advocates say the decrease is because of stiffer gun registration laws such as the Brady Bill and an overall drop in crime, especially drug-related gun crimes. They cite anecdotes of concealed weapon carriers who shoot or threaten innocent people." ...

"THERE is something seriously strange with our society when a person can take a loaded pistol to a street outside a nightclub and tell a court he was not thinking about using it."

"Suppose there is a law that is popular with 90% of potential jurors, but regarded as intrusive and wrong by the remaining 10%. Suppose also that a jury is selected randomly from that pool, properly aware that they can acquit on the grounds that it's a bad law if they want to. What is the probability of conviction?"

"The answer is not 0.9 or 90%. The answer, in mathematics, requires one to multiply the individual probabilities that any one juror will vote to convict. That is, 0.9 by 0.9 by 0.9 . . . 12 times. Or, 0.9 to the power of 12."

"Try it on your calculator: the answer is 0.282, i.e. a 28.2% probability of conviction! For breaking a law that 90% of voters like!"

"Manitoba's tough anti-stalking law has been given an equally tough review by a Manitoba judge. A woman had sought and received a protection order against her male neighbour, with whom she had once been friends. The man asked the court to rescind the order on the ground that the law was unconstitutional -- that it went so far in its effort to stop one potential injury that it needlessly created another. Mr.Justice John Scurfield of the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench agreed, up to a point. He struck down part of the law this month to make it compatible with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. "The rights of an American are (or used to be) Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of property. That means the right not to be killed, the right not to be messed with, and the right to try to acquire stuff. To further specify what they believed our rights to be, the founding fathers added a few addenda, namely the bill of rights, which all kind of spring from the first basic three. You have a right to believe how you want, speak your mind, and so does the press. You have a right to pack heat. You don't have to be a bed and breakfast for the military, et cetera. Oh, and just in case we left any rights out, doesn't mean they don't exist."

A crime reporter and human interest columnist laments the indifference of young people to violent death.

Would YOUR kids tease a reporter about his uncool footwear as a murder investigation went on a car-length away in YOUR neighborhood?

Guns are not the problem. The rise of barbarism is. Yet some in this city will point to this murder as the reason you and I should lose more of our rights.

"I'm used to kids less than half my age on the streets of Richmond talking to me like I'm a punk, even though I could still - in my advancing age - probably give them some excitement in a fair fight, were I the type to take offense."

"What troubled me was this silliness was going on while the body of a 21-year-old college student sat about 40 yards away. He had been shot dead less than 20 minutes earlier amid hundreds of young people crowded around Pine and Broad streets. They were part of the thousands who flooded downtown in the wake of the BET College Day hip-hop festival at Paramount's Kings Dominion."

"I was trying to talk to the young men about the shooting, who may have done it and how it affected them. And how they felt about yet another fine event for young black people turning bloody, staining the city, and staining them."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible to live without breaking laws. — AYN RAND
