In Defense Of President Bush

"The comments to me are astounding. First was the comment by one citizen that he had voted for Bush in 2000 but would never vote for him again if he supported the AWB because it is a clear violation of the Constitution. Wow, now this must be really perplexing to the President. The majority of this nation several weeks ago told him to forget the Constitution, support UN resolutions, and wage war on Iraq. They called anyone who disagreed and wanted a declaration of war to be 'friends of Saddam' and traitors to the nation. So what if there is Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution that forbids war without a FORMAL declaration by congress, the masses exclaimed. Didn't the congress sign some resolution that didn't even have the word war in its text? Now some idiots are saying they will not vote for Bush because he refuses to honor the Constitution! Must really keep Dubya up at night trying to figure us out."

... "Guns in the hands of the Iraqi people could not save them from tyranny. Our Second Amendment was added to ensure Americans had the means, should it ever become necessary, to overthrow tyranny. But, the Amendment does not give us the guarantee that we will always be able to exercise it. No, being able to use it derives its usefulness from a citizenry sufficiently informed as to halt the other government intrusions which render the Second Amendment ineffective. Our Founders could only give to us the Second Amendment guarantee on paper. How we protected it, was up to us. In fact, we believe that had there not been a deadly and brutal secret police network installed, Iraqis could have thrown off their oppressors without the guarantee of a Second Amendment!"

"Why would a smart liberal such as Dianne carry a 'dumb handgun' you might be motivated to ask? That’s easy to answer say I. Liberals carry 'dumb guns' because they are safer for the user than the targeted attacker; hence, only 'stupid Republicans' believe in 'smart guns,' especially the stupid Republicans from New Jersey. Of course, there are no 'liberal' Republicans in New Jersey; only Republicans best described as being 'moderate' Americans."

"Ask a member of the mainstream political Left whether he would be willing to have a camera installed in his house — by the government — with the explicit purpose of monitoring his activities for any potential wrongdoing. Like any self-respecting human being, he would very likely recoil in disgust against so blatant a violation of his privacy."

"Finally, promise him that all footage of his personal activities will be immediately destroyed after being reviewed for unlawful conduct. Rest assured he will still want nothing to do with your crimefighting agenda."

"Now, ask him to extend the same courtesy to gun owners and repeal the background check for firearms purchases. You’ll not have to wait long before every rationalization under the sun is brought to bear in an attempt to show you how 'that’s different.' "

"The NAACP claims that a handful of gun manufacturers and distributors deliberately target black neighborhoods with their gun sales and pitches, and that many of the guns used in crimes can be traced back to these gun sellers."

"This is a big stretch. There is no smoking gun link between the gun industry’s marketing practices and the gun carnage in black communities. Yet, the NAACP has a point about raging black violence. An African-American soldier in Iraq may have been safer on the frontlines than in many black neighborhoods." ...

"But even if a legal miracle happened, and the NAACP wins its lawsuit, it would be a hollow victory."

"California Democratic Assemblyman Paul Koretz is at it again. A year ago, Koretz tried to cash-in on widespread fears of terrorism by sponsoring a bill to ban .50 caliber rifles in the state. To woo emotive soccer moms, he nonchalantly labeled the rifles 'sniper weapons' and boldly proclaimed that the .50 BMG 'would be an ideal choice for use in an act of terrorism.' It was a targeted attack on a very small percentage of gun owners that he assumed no one would bother to defend. He was wrong, and his proposed assault on the Second Amendment was temporarily repelled."

"But on April 29th, the California Committee on Public Safety is scheduled to vote on a rehash of the same prohibition, again introduced by Koretz. Assembly Bill 50 seeks to expand California’s current 'assault weapons' ban by including identical measures for .50 BMG rifles. To twist the knife just a bit, the bill also bans .50 caliber ammunition, making it nearly impossible for Californians who already own .50 BMG rifles to actually use them." ...
