"The April 16 guest column by Heidi Yewman, "Gun advocates ignore lessons of Columbine," was an entertaining reminder of the glory days of the gun control movement. The headline refers to the lessons of Columbine, which Yewman obviously interprets as a need for more and stricter gun laws, including background checks at gun shows, a ban on so-called assault weapons and the ability to sue gun makers. Let's take these one at a time."

"It looks like the 9th Circuit court in California has as little respect for the First Amendment as it has for the Second. According to Eugene Volokh of the Volokh Conspiracy, the court decided yesterday that "derogatory and injurious remarks directed at students' minority status such as race, religion, and sexual orientation" are not protected by the First Amendment."

"The governor is taking full advantage of his massive campaign war chest to fill the airwaves with the first round of attack ads at a time when Topinka is still trying to recover financially from the cost of the Republican primary. One Blagojevich ad attacks Topinka for supporting President Bush's tax cuts, another for opposing a hike in the minimum wage and a third uses Topinka's own words to ridicule her opposition to additional gun control laws."

"Some two weeks after a bill was signed into law allowing Nebraskans to carry concealed weapons, Lincoln Mayor Coleen Seng said Thursday that she would seek to ban them in the capital."

"The action underscores an apparent hole in the concealed carry law, which does not preclude cities from enacting their own bans."

"The concealed weapon bill is a very real threat to the security of citizens... I support the constitutional right of citizens to own weapons, but passage of the concealed weapons law unnecessarily puts Lincoln at risk for increased confrontations involving guns."

Security in the Lansing School District is getting tougher. Public safety officers will soon be able to make arrests.

The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards will license the 30 officers.

They can make arrests based on a Michigan State Law provision, it grants arrest authorities to agencies who provide security for hospitals and shopping malls.

The criteria for an arrest by the Lansing School District Public Safety officers is very strict, and officers are not allowed to carry a gun.

The public safety officers completed 100 hours of training at the Lansing Police Department and Lansing Community College.

Lansing is the first school district in the state to use this program.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so. Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order. — Adolf Hitler, April 11, 1942. (Source: "Hitler's Table-Talk at the Fuehrer's Headquarters 1941-1942", Dr. Henry Picker, ed. (Athenaeum Verlag, Bonn, 1951).)
