... "Whether any such coveted revenues will outweigh further legal costs the city will face is a question taxpayers should be asking their representatives who insisted on reopening an issue presumably already settled in the courts. Ohio Revised Code claims preemption by the state in the field of non-federal firearms regulation, and the matter was supposedly already settled when the City of Cleveland lost against the state in 2010, with the Supreme Court of Ohio 'uphold[ing] as Constitutional state law displacing local gun-control ordinances.'" ...

"In a remarkable bit of candor by a public servant, a member of the Cleveland, Ohio City Council yesterday reportedly acknowledged that the city’s new gun control law was 'not designed to stop gun violence,' but only reflect the 'council’s values,' according to Cleveland.com."

"That ordinance might also not even be legal under Ohio state law. According to WRGT, the local Fox affiliate, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled in 2010 that state gun law supersedes local ordinances, and even the local press expects a court challenge." ...

... "Pew cites the media’s relentless focus on crime as one possible reason for Americans’ change of heart: Media outlets and politicians focused on crime to show how dangerous guns had made America to gin up support for gun control. However, the attempt backfired, and Americans responded to the reports of higher crime by wanting more guns and wanting their right to own guns protected."

"Another theory, highlighted by the Tribune, is that Americans simply came to understand that Second Amendment rights–like First, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Amendment rights, among others–are constitutionally protected and not up for a public vote." ...

"This government regulation game can be so darned confusing sometimes. I thought that it was the GOP who was all about the racism and the Obama administration wanted to move us to a post-racial society? And yet, since new background check rules from the BATF went into effect in 2012, federal forms require purchasers to provide racial information. What’s up with that?"

"No matter the cause, in a strange twist of political roles which will no doubt give the media conniptions, some Republicans are pushing a bill to stop the practice." ...

"Early last summer I began making contributions to the National Rifle Association — a dollar here, a dollar there — to see where my money would end up. Some of it quickly found its way into the account of the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund, the NRA’s political action committee. And that was of no small interest, because I never knowingly contributed to the NRA-PVF. For me, this wasn’t a big problem; my contributions were a spit in the bucket for an organization that spent $37 million on the 2014 elections ... But my contributions and others like them may be a big problem for the NRA because, according to some of the nation’s top experts on federal election law, they are all illegal." ...

"'Fans attending Major League Baseball games are being greeted in a new way this year: with metal detectors at the ballparks. Touted as a counterterrorism measure, they’re nothing of the sort. They’re pure security theater: They look good without doing anything to make us safer. We’re stuck with them because of a combination of buck passing, CYA thinking and fear.' Baseball’s new metal detectors won’t keep you safe. "An 'accidental discharge' is more accurately known as a negligent discharge (ND). One second you’re admiring a brilliantly designed and executed piece of wood (or plastic) and steel and the next, your ears are ringing, you’re blinking furiously, you’re surrounded by smoke and the unmistakable odor of gunpowder. Your first conscious thought: 'Oh s**t!' If you’re fortunate, the only holes present are in furniture, walls and appliances rather than yourself or someone else. If it was a rifle round, there will tend to be rather more holes than if it were a handgun round. If you’re really fortunate, no one else was aware of your ND, somewhat minimizing the damage to your self-image . . ." ...

And according to a forbes.com article, he’s been selling the Armatix iP1 'smart gun' since January, apparently on the down low. "The Rev. Edward Fride of Christ the King Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan will no longer be holding concealed pistol license classes at his parish, per a directive handed down from Bishop Earl Boyea, reports the Detroit Free Press. 'The Ann Arbor Catholic priest under criticism for urging parishioners to arm themselves has posted on Facebook that his parish will no longer hold any classes to learn about earning a license to carry a concealed pistol. The Rev. Edward Fride said he’ll abide by the directive of Lansing Bishop Earl Boyea, who oversees the parish, and who said Monday such classes are not appropriate for church property.' . . ." ...

"Gun control stories are sensitive. Some feel there are too many rules, others feel there aren’t enough, and both sides are extremely passionate about their beliefs."

"WRAL Investigates was contacted by a certified gun instructor and member of the National Rifle Association who was concerned about people sidestepping North Carolina’s rigorous training to obtain a concealed carry permit. We’re talking no live fire training, no details about North Carolina’s concealed carry laws and no explanation about when you can and can’t shoot as a homeowner or in self-defense." ...

"I read an article in The Press some time back where Concealed Weapons Permits (CWPs) are on the rise in Kootenai County. Because of a recent encounter (not an incident), I hope to set the record straight just in case some of these 'anti-gun' fanatics may try to twist everything around and claim that us Idahoans think we live back in the 'Old Wild West' days."

"On my way inside one of the local businesses, a person noticed I was carrying a firearm before I had the chance to conceal it and asked me if I planned on 'packing' it inside. Since this person came across in a derogatory manner, I wanted to say 'I'm a proud American and a native of North Idaho who enjoys my Second Amendment rights ...' ..." ...

"I am opposed to the new concealed carry law for some the reasons articulated by its opponents. To address some of the objections to the law I propose the following amendment." ...

"Even if one assumes concealed carry is a constitutional right, these are minimal restrictions on the right and are consistent with lawful restrictions placed on other constitutional rights, including on the Second Amendment."

"I am responding to an article (posted April 17 online, April 18 print version) about a bill, LD 600, that would expand those prohibited from possessing guns."

"During the past 15 years, Maine has seen an increasing number of domestic violence cases where the end result is extremely tragic. I completely agree with LD 600 and give my full support to Rep. Richard Pickett, R-Dixfield. He has seen those cases firsthand." ...

"Great news for supporters of the Second Amendment came from a recent Pew survey which shows that support for gun rights surpassed support for gun control last December."

"'Americans say that protecting gun rights is more important than controlling gun ownership, 52% to 46%.'"

"The folks at Pew opine that this change in attitude has come with a change in perceptions of crime. While crime has dropped from the 1990’s, when gun control was favored over gun rights in various polls, the perception is that crime has increased, and with it the increased support for gun rights." ...
