Attorney General Dana Nessel will speak at a rally for gun safety at the Michigan State Capitol on Tuesday.
She will be joined by volunteers with the Michigan Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety.
Volunteers are urging lawmakers to pass legislation to "help keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers."
Red Flag bills HB 4283 and HB 4284 let law enforcement and family members seek a court order to temporarily block a person from having guns if they are a danger to themselves or others.
Nessel will be speaking about the importance of various gun violence prevention initiatives with volunteers.
The rally will take place Tuesday from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. |

Fifty-eight guns have been stolen in those break-ins, down from 74 at this time last year. “But 58 is still a lot of guns that [are] out there now in the hands of criminals in the streets of Wichita,” Lt. In December, a man in Monroe, Washington, was arrested after posting images of himself on Facebook wearing a gas mask, holding an AR-style rifle, and surrounded by white power iconography. He also posted repeated threats to kill “30 Jews” and commit a school shooting. Local authorities charged the man with felony threatening, but two days before, they used a so-called extreme risk protection order (ERPO) to seize a dozen of his guns.

A 69-year-old Ionia County homeowner who fatally shot a Lansing man will not be charged with the man's death, prosecutors say.
Justin Eddy, 40, was shot and killed during a reported attempted home burglary in Sebewa Township, near Portland, in early January.
Ionia County Prosecutor Kyle Butler ruled Monday that the homeowner acted in self-defense when he shot Eddy, and chose not to issue charges.
A man, later identified as Eddy, forced his way into a home in the 4000 block of East Musgrove Highway occupied by a married couple, a 69-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman, just after 10:30 p.m. Jan 1.

Every year the number of women enjoying outdoor sports such as fly fishing and skeet shooting grows.
These are just a couple activities offered during the annual Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) program in Marquette County, May 31 to June 2.
Then there’s kayaking and other boating classes or lake and fly fishing – and even wilderness first aid and survival – for all levels.
“Becoming an Outdoors Woman is a program where each individual is encouraged to learn at her own pace,” said Michelle Zellar, BOW program coordinator for the DNR. “The emphasis is on the enjoyment, fun and camaraderie of outdoor activities and sharing in the success of one another.” |

In the words of Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez in the cult classic film “Highlander,” “There can be only one.” On Jan. 28, 2017, we learned the identity of the “one” when the U.S. Army’s Project Executive Office (PEO) Soldier announced the selection of the Modular Handgun System (MHS). The winner of the long and somewhat convoluted trial was SIG Sauer—with a pair of guns based upon its striker-fired P320, the 4.7"-barreled XM17 and the compact, 3.9"-barreled XM18. Those designations have since changed to the U.S. M17 and M18, respectively. The plan is to procure 421,000 guns, with the Army taking 195,000, the Marines 35,000, the Air Force 130,000 and the Navy 61,000.

Legislation expanding Indiana’s Stand Your Ground law and changing some gun regulations is headed to the governor’s desk. One part of the final measure is the Stand Your Ground expansion. Existing law says you can’t be held criminally liable if you use force to defend yourself, another person or your property. The legislation extends that to civil court.

Weeks after getting in a confrontation with Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen at a closed-door Republican dinner, gun rights activist Chris McNutt asked for an apology for what he said amounted to having his name “dragged through the mud.” “They’ve painted this narrative of this outraged gun activist,” McNutt told The Texas Tribune after a press conference he had Tuesday afternoon inside the JW Marriott hotel in downtown Austin. “It just makes me looks like a complete nut job.”

At the state capitol in Augusta Monday, Maine lawmakers got an earful from both sides in a hotly-debated push to adopt a so-called “red flag” law, the generic term for legislation that would legalized Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO) that allow people deemed to be “at risk” to have their firearms seized by police.
The confiscations are supposed to be “temporary,” but that might happen only after the subject of an ERPO comes to court to argue his case, and that happens only after the guns are seized. According to Red Flag critics, it amounts to being considered guilty until proven innocent, which flies in the face of the doctrine of presumed innocence that has been a cornerstone of American justice. |

Senator Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) said Monday that as president she would unilaterally tighten gun control laws through executive action if Congress did not pass legislation to do so within her first 100 days in office. Harris explained during CNN’s town hall event in New Hampshire that she would use her executive authority to require that anyone who sells more than five guns per year conduct a background check on all sales, effectively eliminating their status as a “private seller” in a move that would be vulnerable to legal challenge.

As a career realtor, I know that mediation and negotiation is essential to success. The same should be true in the legislative process. Last year in Delaware, the General Assembly made good progress in passing measures that addressed the issue of troubled individuals having access to firearms. The Beau Biden Violence Protection Act and the "red flag" bill added tools to intervene when a person was intent on harming themselves or others.

A year-old political battle over firearms policies adopted by handful of national banks and financial institutions is still burning in the Louisiana State Capitol. House Bill 413 Rep. Blake Miguez, a New Iberia Republican and competitive shooter, would outlaw what he called “discrimination” by making it illegal for a bank, credit card processor or other financial institution to turn down customers because of their involvement in the firearms industry. |

Tuesday night, Greeley City Council members agreed to consider an ordinance stating their opposition to House Bill 1177, also known as the red flag or Extreme Risk Protection Orders bill. The big picture: House Bill 1177, which was signed into law earlier this month, will allow family members, household members or law enforcement to petition the court for an order, known as an Extreme Risk Protection Order, that would require law enforcement to remove firearms from a person determined by a judge to be a risk to themselves or others. |

In 1987, only 10 states had concealed-carry laws that treated the right to carry consistent with our constitutional right to bear arms. Understanding that the whims and prejudices of government officials are incompatible with the proper recognition of a constitutional right, the NRA and our members in the following three decades have worked to replace discretionary may-issue concealed-carry permitting statutes with shall-issue right-to-carry laws. Today, 42 states and the District of Columbia have right-to-carry laws granting permits to law-abiding residents.

The Oregon House voted on Tuesday to approve a bill that’s meant to make it harder for domestic abusers to keep their weapons. The measure, House Bill 2013, would create a standard process for removing guns from people who are prohibited by a court order from owning them in cases of stalking incidents or abuse. Right now different jurisdictions come up with their own protocols. The bill would also extend the ban on gun possession to abusers who don’t show up in court, as long as they’re notified of the hearing in advance.

A controversial hunting ordinance was killed on 5-6 vote by the city council Tuesday more than six years after residents first starting complaining about the encroachment of hunters on their property and their fear of being shot. The measure, which would have banned hunting on all city-owned property and required written permission on private property, was fiercely opposed by hunters. As many as 75 hunters have packed public discussions on the ordinance. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our Founding Fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the second amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of the country. For that reason I believe the second amendment will always be important. --JOHN F. KENNEDY |
