"For the fourth time, New York City's lawsuit against several gun manufacturers has survived an attempt by Congress to kill it off."

"A federal judge in Brooklyn ruled Thursday that the city may have access to gun tracing information gathered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, even though a recently passed measure expressly forbids such data from being used in civil suits."

"U.S. Judge Jack B. Weinstein said the new rule doesn't apply to information already in the city's possession."

"I think when you look at the numbers, when you do surveys, it's a very small number of people who actually believe that people should be carrying concealed weapons in the workplace, on the streets of our cities, in schools," Bloomberg said yesterday."

-------
The federal government estimates there are over 65 million gun owners in this country. At least four million are members of the NRA, and millions of others belong to other gun rights groups such as Gun Owners of America and the Second Amendment Foundation.

A recent National Association of Police Chiefs Survey also contradicted Bloomberg's claims and concluded that most police also believe that carrying concealed weapons reduces crime.

"Fed up with a lack of federal support in fighting gun violence in their cities, the mayors of New York and Boston led a National Summit on Illegal Guns Tuesday. They were joined by the mayors of 13 other cities, including Yonkers, in forming a base from which to pressure Washington to act against illegal guns."

"Their initiative, unfortunately, is necessary."

"DESPITE THE roughly 200 million firearms in private hands, mayors of major cities believe there are supply-side solutions to the problem of gun deaths that total 30,000 a year in the United States. Armed only with a statement of principles and fresh from a Tuesday summit in New York City, 15 mayors appear ready to recruit their colleagues to take on the gun lobby and its abettors in Congress."

"State senators failed by one vote Wednesday to override Gov. Janet Napolitano's veto of legislation to trim gubernatorial powers to seize weapons."

"The 19-10 vote — one vote short of the necessary two-thirds margin — came even after Sen. Dean Martin, R-Phoenix, speculated that Napolitano vetoed the measure so she could use her emergency powers to take weapons away from members of the Minuteman Project patrolling the Mexican border."

"Sen. Marsha Arzberger, D-Willcox, bolted party loyalty and agreed to override the Democratic governor. Another Democrat whose district includes a large stretch of rural Arizona, Rebecca Rios of Apache Junction, left the floor before the vote was cast."

"Last December, Morio Billings, a 31-year-old career criminal from Chicago, broke into Wilmette resident's Hale DeMar's home and stole some house keys and a car. Less than 24 hours later, Billings was inside DeMar's house again, trying to see what else he could find."

"What he found was DeMar holding a handgun."

"DeMar, who shot Billings in the shoulder and calf, has not been charged for the shooting (Cook County prosecutors have determined it was justified), but he has been charged with violating the village of Wilmette's ban on handguns, as well as for failing to renew his Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification card. He could serve up to a year in jail."

"Now, a Downstate Democrat, 117th District State Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion), who called DeMar a 'law-abiding citizen,' has introduced HB 4075, which would override local handgun bans when the handguns are used in self-defense."

"The Second Amendment to the Constitution states that the people have the right to keep and bear arms and that this right is not to be infringed upon by the state. The Tenth Amendment states that powers not delegated to the federal government belong to the States and the people."

"The Constitution places priority on personal responsibility over federal bureaucracy. Citizens are given the right to defend themselves. When there is a question of interpretation, we should err on the side of more liberty, not more legislation."

"...So the debate over concealed carry is really a debate over liberty. Will the state become more powerful, or will the people become more responsible?"

"Last week marked the sixth anniversary of the Columbine school shootings. Along with it, two high school students in Kansas soon will face charges for planning a similar attack. Shootings in Minneapolis also have been surprisingly common lately. The occurrence of these violent acts can be lessened by one thing for sure: gun control."

"Shooting after shooting, it becomes clear the problem is that too many people are able to legally acquire handguns in America. Too many people who do legally own handguns aren’t keeping them safe from their children."

"What do people even need handguns for? Protection, right? However, if no one could buy or carry a handgun legally, no one would need a handgun to protect themselves. ..." ...

"The gun owners lobby scored a surprising reversal Wednesday, winning final approval of a bill that lets anyone use deadly force when attacked in public – even if retreating from an attacker is an option."

"Under current law, deadly force can be used only if people are threatened in their home, or if in public they are the target of a deadly attack, a kidnapping or attempted rape. In other situations, retreat is required."

"After a campaign by gun rights groups, House membersWednesday embraced expanding the deadly force law, on a vote of 193-134. Only five weeks ago, they had cast a lopsided measure against a similar bill."

"State Rep. Mike Shelton said House Bill 2696 has placed the power of the law into the wrong hands."

"And while all of the homicides have not included guns, most have. That's why the anti-gun summit taking place in New York was a good idea, and it's also why we need stricter gun laws here in Tennessee."

"But as Bloomberg and the other mayors were having their anti-gun summit in New York, another group was criticizing their actions."

"The group, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, called the anti-gun summit a session 'to devise more schemes to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens, which will only lead to more crime because people will be unable to protect themselves.'" ...

THE Bracks Government has ruled out calls from the Prime Minister to further restrict gun ownership, saying Victoria led the way after a shooting at Monash University.

Yesterday, on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Port Arthur massacre, John Howard called on the states to take a tougher stance against handguns. "I think there's always more that can be done at a state level," Mr Howard told the ABC.

But a spokeswoman for Premier Steve Bracks said Victoria had led the way on gun reform in 2002 after commerce student Huan Yun Xiang killed two people during a bloody rampage at Monash University. Victoria was the first state to move on a Commonwealth agreement to ban many handguns.

"I grew up in Massachusetts in the 1950s. April 19th was celebrated each year as Patriots Day. The holiday commemorates the ride of Paul Revere, and the battles of Lexington and Concord in the colony which birthed the American Revolution." ...

"Growing up in New England in the fifties, there seemed to be no great public concern about guns. At a fairly tender age, I was responsible enough to be entrusted with a BB gun, which I used to protect the household from marauding tin cans, birds in the cornfield, and squirrels robbing the bird feeders. A few years later, I enrolled in a neighboring town’s NRA Youth program, shooting .22 rifles in the basement of the armory. A young boy with an air rifle or .22 drew little interest from passersby on the country roads along which I’d walk on the way to the range, or to an abandoned quarry where I often practiced. Even the local police would wave and drive on by."

"Senior John Hupp also agrees with the legislation, and thinks there should be limits to firearm ownership. 'I don’t want just anyone going around with a gun. If you want to conceal a weapon, you should have permission. Even if you’re responsible about it, someone who’s not could get a hold of it,' he said."
