"POLICE officers carrying machine guns and pistols were out in force today to reclaim the streets of Manchester from armed thugs."

--The "machine guns" mentioned in the story are actually MP5 submachine guns converted to fire semi-auto only. Note that while the plods on the street are getting more and more heavily-armed, their bosses are doing their level best to prevent the tax-paying citizens who pay their wages from protecting themselves.

"As America struggles to increase national security, Senator Miller and other lawmakers should be acting on measures that will make our communities more secure rather than courting the NRA - an extreme special interest that is systematically working to dismantle sensible gun laws that have proven to save lives."

"The NRA leadership does not represent the views of mainstream Americans. Rather than working to prevent gun violence, the NRA fights to keep military-style assault weapons - high-powered weapons with no civilian purpose - easily available and on our streets."

"No one's surprised that the gun hot line isn't exactly ringing off the hook at the Hartford Police Department. When he was told to start it, Lt. Paul Hammick, head of major crimes, did as instructed. "I follow orders," he says."

"But while he doesn't disparage the hot line, he says it can't rid the streets of drugs and guns, no matter how many times it rings. Only good police work can do that. Mostly, the phone rings at night or on weekends when there aren't many people around."

"It was Constable Vicki Dawson, one of 8 detectives moving through the west-end apartment, opening cupboards, lifting cushions, tapping walls for hidden compartments, who found the gun between the Saran Wrap and baggies in a kitchen drawer."

"The arrest didn't make the news, since the recovery of a gun, and charging a 25-year-old who has a criminal record reaching back into his teens rarely does. But it's stopping what could have been that made members of Toronto's gun task force feel they did their job that night."

"With the good concealed carry bill dead (HB1242 was killed in the Senate Judiciary Committee last week), the real question is whether Colorado is so desperate for a concealed carry bill that we'll accept the worst concealed carry bill ever offered (if you doubt that, compare the provisions of HB1410 to any of the previous year's bills)."

"HB1410, which has passed the House, is now assigned to the Senate Agriculture Committee, and, should it pass, the Senate Appropriations Committee. Both committees have tight margins, and both committees could kill the legislation."

"The flier thumbtacked to the Shtiblach Synagogue bulletin board looks like the others posted around it, advising the congregation of schedules and events. Its message, however, is striking: "Worshippers who have firearms are requested to bring them to prayer services."

"Asaf Teboulle, 22, an Orthodox Jew, does just that. On the Sabbath, when prayer replaces work of every kind and even using a phone or a pen is prohibited, he heeds the call to arms and tucks a black 9-mm into his pants."

Well, it seems that the little psychopath, Robert Steinhaeuser, may have been "influenced by comic books and computer games" that were "infested with violence and extensive use of weaponry, in a manner that was not responsible."

Then again, the parents have some culpability in this since during his youthful years, he was allowed to fill his mind with that rubbish.

Of course, the easy way out is to further restrict the use of firearms. Morons!

"For months, the names of Sept. 11 victims painted on the outside wall of Theresa McCann and Ginny Dixon's home stood as a patriotic memorial to the dead... But last week, two neighbors insisted that the grieving period was over and anonymously filed complaints with the town's code-enforcement department...
