Also Jesus: “all who draw the sword will die by the sword” and “turn the other cheek.” These words exemplify the very different portraits of Jesus that Christians have when it comes to issues like gun control, gun rights, and self-defense. Is it ethical to defend oneself or one’s family? Does Jesus want his people to be packing?

Recognized as the most popular rifle in America, the ArmaLite-15 (commonly known as the AR-15) is a variant of the M-16 series of rifles and carbines used by the military. Gun owners admire its lighter weight, ease for modifications and accuracy at up to 500 yards.

Gun control advocates have long complained that Second Amendment supporters balk whenever it comes to giving the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) tax dollars to study gun uses. It’s not so much that we oppose research about gun violence; it’s more that we have some apprehension about a predisposition toward anti-gun bias in such research. After all, the CDC, in one of its early ventures in the “gun violence research” field, published a flawed study in 1993 that was designed to support the gun control argument.

There was a time when horror over gun violence stood a chance of prodding national politicians to act on their outrage. Half a century ago, politicians seemed particularly amenable to tougher measures if a shooting victim was one of their own. After the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and then mere months after the murders of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Congress was moved in 1968 to enact a gun control law.
