AR-15 Should not Be Banned

What do you think when you hear the phrase “assault rifle?” Most of you that oppose gun rights would say “an AR-15, because that’s what the AR stands for, plus it just looks scary.” I hear this a lot. It’s wrong. The AR stands for Armalite Rifle, the brand that first made this style of gun. A simple search on google defines an “assault rifle” as “a rapid-fire, magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for infantry use.” (Which I would debate calling any rifle an “assault rifle,” but I will save that argument for another time).

All too often a murderous maniac opens fire on innocent, law-abiding Americans and forces us to take an honest look at what can be done to stop future attacks. It happened in Pittsburgh in October at the Tree of Life synagogue, claiming the lives of 11 innocent men and women. It happened in Parkland, Fla., where 17 students and teachers were murdered. In the aftermath of that tragedy, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission conducted a detailed examination of what happened and what could realistically be done to prevent it from happening again. One of its key recommendations was to allow teachers, who volunteer and undergo extensive background checks and training, to carry concealed firearms on campus.

While some gun activists are questioning the decision by U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez to grant a stay in the case of Duncan v. Becerra—the challenge to California’s magazine capacity limit—it may have been the best move for Golden State gun owners, and all it takes is a careful reading of the order to understand why.

The American Revolution was sparked in part by unjust taxation. After all, the colonists in Boston rebelled against Britain for imposing “taxation without representation,” and summarily tossed English tea into the harbor in protest in 1773. Nowadays Americans collectively spend more than 6 billion hours each year filling out tax forms, keeping records, and learning new tax rules according to the Office of Management and Budget. Complying with the byzantine U.S. tax code is estimated to cost the American economy hundreds of billions of dollars annually – time and money that could otherwise be used for more productive activities like entrepreneurship and investment, or just more family and leisure time.

Speaking of copycat legislation: The worst NRA desire of this legislative session — adding Arkansas to the list of states with dangerous "stand your ground" laws — isn't dead yet. Another run to pass it, potentially with the acquiescence of a former foe, is on the agenda for the legislature's final week. The Tweet from Sen. Bob Ballinger is no idle threat. Also, Sen. Trent Garner (R-El Dorado), the angriest gun advocate, is growing more excitable by the day in hopes of resurrecting the bill that eliminates any need to retreat in face of danger.

California's strict gun laws have been landed in jeopardy after a judge threw out the decades-old ban on high-capacity magazines, sparking a "buying frenzy," a new ban and another court battle. US District Judge Roger Benitez ordered a halt to the sale of magazines holding more than 10 rounds in California until the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decides whether to reinstate the state's ban on them.

Aztec residents rallied today demanding the City Commission pass a Second Amendment Sanctuary City resolution. "Aztec, all of Aztec, wants to be a Second Amendment city," said Mark Beach, the organizer. The rally came nearly two weeks after a resolution failed on a 3-2 vote partially due to the city attorney’s concerns that it could leave Aztec vulnerable to a lawsuit.

The 2019 Utah legislative session, dominated by LDS Republicans, was a stunning exhibit of Mormon values simply forgotten. Dismissed. The honest, otherwise decent legislators are probably good husbands, wives, fathers, mothers and loyal members of their faith. Yet it is shocking to observe the spectacular metamorphosis that occurs when they have to address a gun issue. Suddenly they become rabid, myopic disciples of the NRA, spouting the same old fears about the slippery slope to gun confiscation.

MASSACHUSETTS PRIDES ITSELF for taking gun control seriously, and has the results to prove it. The state’s gun mortality rate is the second-lowest in the country: 3.7 gun deaths per 100,000 people, according to the latest available data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, trailing only Hawaii. But preventing gun violence requires a sustained and vigilant approach. So what are the policy holes that need to be filled next?

For generations we have risen in the middle of the night to lurk through the woods and position ourselves underneath a towering roost tree. When dawn breaks, good-morning gobbles and yelps greet our bleary eyes. If all goes well, we get a head start to Waffle House. On the other hand, if the turkeys head in another direction we simply have lost sleep. After a few days of being ditched, our predawn enthusiasm starts to transition to grumpy exhaustion. How about taking a new approach and sleeping in for turkeys? Trust me, many of us could use plenty of beauty sleep. But there’s a strategy here that goes well beyond catching up on rest.

Red Flag Laws are Harmful to More Than Just The Second Amendment

The gun control debate is fired up in Colorado again. Both sides are heated over House Bill 1177, which codifies the use of extreme risk protection orders (ERPO). The Colorado House approved HB1177 Monday and sent the so-called red flag bill to Gov. Jared Polis, who has indicated he will sign it. Even if you don't identify with either side of this debate, it is not hard to see how deeply flawed this legislation is. Red flag laws are menacing threat to many constitutional rights other than the Second Amendment.

When we discussed the “civil society” gambit to ban modern multi-purpose semi-automatic firearms, we noted that it was being used to set up a one-two combination to get people to not look at the facts surrounding these firearms. The first part of that combination was massive amounts of emotional manipulation. For instance, Kamala Harris used the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting as pawns during her CNN town hall. Before that, there were the victims of Columbine, Las Vegas, Tucson, Virginia Tech, and just about any other mass shooting. Since then, they’ve used victims from Parkland.

While many states surrounding Pennsylvania have added Sunday hunting in recent years, the Keystone State remains one of the last holdouts. The other two states that don’t allow hunting on Sundays are Maine and Massachusetts. That may change. A bill that would give the Pennsylvania Game Commission the authority to permit hunting on Sundays cleared its first hurdle last month when the Senate Game & Fisheries Committee voted to advance the bill to the full Senate.
