Ron Paul: National ID Cards Won't Stop Terrorism or Illegal Immigration

"This REAL ID Act establishes a massive, centrally-coordinated database of highly personal information about American citizens: at a minimum their name, date of birth, place of residence, Social Security number, and physical characteristics. The legislation also grants open-ended authority to the Secretary of Homeland Security to require biometric information on IDs in the future. This means your harmless looking driver’s license could contain a retina scan, fingerprints, DNA information, or radio frequency technology. ..." ...

"Criminals don’t obey laws! As with gun control, national ID cards will only affect law-abiding citizens. Do we really believe a terrorist bent on murder is going to dutifully obtain a federal ID card? ..."

"The only possible recourse, at this time, would be through the court system and would involve more money than most folks can afford. Of course, these cases never end with one judgment. Rather they tend to be appealed and appealed all the way up a Circuit Court where the rulings vary depending on your geographic locale. And while the average citizen may not be able to afford to fight such cases, the government can easily afford it through the use of our tax dollars."

"Ultimately, the U.S. Justice Department and/or the U.S. Supreme Court will have to take definitive action to protect our right from the anti-American predators that seek to destroy liberty. If they fail to act, their position will be nothing more than words printed on paper as will the Second Amendment."

"A reminder to naive cognitive dissonance dupes who whine, 'they'd never do that!' when THEY HAVE done exactly that throughout history."

"...almost 100 million deaths this century — deaths that were not caused by war or revolution, but by the conscious decision of tyrants, politicians, or bureaucrats to murder great numbers of their own people for reasons of ideology, religion, race or land."

"Compare: 100 million people murdered by governments this century; 75% by communist regimes — to about 38 million killed in all wars and conflicts."

"Professional doomsayers are having something of a field day, fomenting hysteria over recent passage in Florida of a law that lets citizens defend themselves against criminal attack without first making an attempt to flee."

"The Sunshine State's 'No Duty to Retreat,' or 'Stand Your Ground,' law is not a novel concept, although it is hardly universal in the land of the free and home of the brave. In my home state of Washington — where our state constitution explicitly guarantees 'The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself, or the state, shall not be impaired' — the state Supreme Court has twice affirmed in recent years that there is 'no duty to retreat.'"

"This is the kind of thing we are told by bureaucrats in the City of Clyde and Toledo to fear if guns are allowed in parks. The trouble is, all the gun control laws in the world didn't stop this incident from occurring. Do they really believe a 'no-guns' sign would have helped keep these criminals out of this public park?"

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The NRA has a point about the inadvisability of simply taking guns away from the populace. If that were possible, it would not disarm that small percentage of the population willing to break the law.... Punishing people who obey the law is backward thinking. — Hugh Downs, Veteran ABC newsman
