"Gun control may emerge as a wedge issue in the fall elections, as Congress decides whether to reauthorize the assault weapons ban."
"The 10-year ban expires this September..." ...
"The bill's fate may rest in the hands of powerful lawmakers such as House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land, a vocal gun control opponent who has already suggested House Republicans may let the measure expire." ...
"Gun control advocates suspect that the White House is trying to have it both ways, rhetorically supporting the ban to appease moderates while keeping the GOP base happy by letting the House kill the gun measure." |

"IF you go down to the woods today, make sure you are wearing a bright orange safety vest and hope that Shemane Nugent is not hiding behind a bush with a .38 tucked in her belt and a steel-tipped arrow loaded in her hunting bow."
"The blonde huntress, who is the wife of rock star Ted Nugent and mother to son Rocco, stormed into Washington last week to introduce the capital's urban elite to a growing political phenomenon: gals who like guns." ...
"Nugent made it clear that Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, who some right-wingers consider soft on gun owners' rights, was in her sights."
"Someone better tell Kerry that when a mother bear is defending her young she is unstoppable," she said." |

"...I can’t help but notice the worried looks and whispers of waiting passengers while helping a ticket agent check in my rifle or muzzleloader at the airport. In one case, my daughters overheard a woman tell her husband, 'You’d think with children in his house he wouldn’t keep guns around.' "
"Amazing. I would have thought she would have been more impressed that my three daughters — then fairly young — had stood in line for 30 minutes without irritating the spit out of everyone within hearing. At some point you would hope those judgmental sorts would look at your family group, consider the evidence before them, and realize gun ownership isn’t an indicator of criminal intent or aberrant behavior." |

"An effective gun control program can readily accommodate the legitimate needs of hunting, marksmanship, collection and self-defense. That's not the problem. The problem has to do with the Second Amendment, which was placed in the constitution for two reasons. First, an effective citizens militia was regarded as essential to national defense. Second, it was thought to be more difficult for an unjust government to tyrannize over an armed citizenry than an unarmed one." ...
"As regards the second reason, things are not so simple. We live peaceably under a benign government, and the threat of tyranny is perhaps the last thing the average citizen has on his mind. It can't happen here. Or can it? ..." |

"Senate action in February and March loaded down a certain bill with anti-gun amendments. ..." ...
"Additionally, Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., along with 11 other switch hitters cosponsored pro-gun legislation even while plotting to kill it. ..."
"Daschle is up for re-election this year, and so is Dorgan. So, you hunters and gun owners, now know who your friends are. Let's get Daschle and Dorgan out and replace them with folks who respect our Second Amendment rights."
"I hardly need to add that a vote for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry would be comparable to a turkey voting for Thanksgiving."
------- Of course, so would voting for Bush. But no one seems to mention this little uncomfortable fact. |

FULL TEXT BELOW:
Israel Police, in conjunction with the Interior Ministry, kicked off a firearms-return campaign Sunday. According to the plan, weapons held by the public without proper permits must be returned by the end of the year.
In the first stage of the campaign, letters will be sent to some 32,000 citizens who hold firearms without a valid permit.
At the end of the operation in October, criminal investigations will be launched into the citizens who did not respond to the mailed-in warning.
------- It's difficult to believe that a country that supposedly realizes the value of an armed citizenry in crime prevention still uses fascist permitting and licensing schemes. |
