"Roughly 70,000 gun rights supporters converged on Charlotte, North Carolina last weekend for the NRA's 'Celebration of American Values' convention." ...

"Hundreds of conventioneers stayed at the Charlotte Marriott City Center, where Grass Roots North Carolina also held its 'Gala for Gun Rights' on Friday night, hosting a number of national gun rights defenders. GRNC selected the hotel because it did not post against firearms. Inspections of the main entrance were made both the day prior and the day of the event. So imagine the surprise of GRNC supporters who found that signs barring guns printed by computer had been scotch-taped into place on Friday evening during the event." ...

"New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's 'relaxation' of gun regulations to make them more streamlined in the city is 'a lot of flash and very little substance,' the Second Amendment Foundation said today, after carefully studying the new guidelines."

"'It is clear to us,' said SAF Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb, 'that Mayor Bloomberg is trying to make it appear that his gun regulations are more user-friendly to deflect a potential lawsuit once the Supreme Court rules on our legal action to overturn the handgun ban in Chicago. This tells us that Bloomberg and his legal advisors are convinced the high court will hand down a favorable ruling in the McDonald case ...'" ...

"Friday night, 150 guests enjoyed filet mignon and grilled swordfish while meeting the biggest names in gun rights at GRNC’s Gala for Gun Rights. Held ... blocks from the NRA convention, Gala speakers included DC v. Heller attorney Alan Gura, Senator Richard Burr, 8th Congressional contender Tim D'Anunzio, Second Amendment Foundation director Joe Tartaro, Firearms Coalition co-director Jeff Knox, and WBT Radio host Tara Servatius."

"What no one expected, however, was the appearance of internationally-renowned concealed carry researcher John R. Lott, author of 'More Guns, Less Crime' (just released in a 3rd edition). I understand we all have a right to promote that which we think advances our cause, so it's not my place to impose my presumptions over what someone else chooses to showcase. I will, however, take this opportunity to do what I can to promote the right of all peaceable people to keep and bear arms on a site where I control the content."

"One of my students asked me yesterday if it was OK if he shot part of his allotted 500 rounds with the excellent Advantage Arms .22 Long Rifle conversion unit on his Glock 23 carry gun. The reason was that he'd been able to round up 500 rounds of .40 S&W, but shooting it up would leave his practice ammo supply severely depleted. I told him that part of what he was learning with me was rapid fire recoil control, and he’d do better to shoot with the 'real deal.' (Conversion units for inexpensive .22 are great for developing trigger control, though, and 'draw to the shot' smoothness with accuracy.)" ...

"Ohio's establishment media has a long history of taking sides in the debate on the right to keep and bear arms. In her coverage of the Dayton area gun show anti-gun protest at Hara Arena, Kelli Wynn of The Dayton Daily News managed to take that anti-gun bias to a new level."

"Her fawning and overly-sympathetic coverage of the protest was a slap in the face to fair-minded Ohioans, regardless of their political affiliation or views on the gun issue."

"After police arrested Times Square bombing suspect Faisal Shahzad at a New York airport, they found a rifle in his car. Shahzad's name had appeared on a no-fly list in time to prevent him from escaping, yet in the months before the failed bombing attempt he was able to walk into a gun shop and legally purchase the weapon. The news set off a scramble in Congress to propose a bill barring suspected terrorists from buying guns. That would be fine, says Steve Chapman in Reason, 'except for that pesky Second Amendment,' which makes it unconstitutional to deny an American citizen the right to buy a gun. An excerpt:" ...

"In 2008, the Supreme Court struck down a Washington, D.C. ordinance banning possession of handguns. It was a huge victory for advocates of gun rights -- but not, so far, for Washingtonians who would like to acquire a pistol legally. Ever since the verdict, the city government has worked hard to keep things as close as possible to the way they were before."

"As today's Wall Street Journal reports, new rules require guns to be registered, limit the number of bullets they can hold, compel owners to take a written test and force frequent renewals, with failure to renew carrying a jail term. It also mandates a new device that marks each spent shell with an identifying code -- even though that technology hasn't been invented yet." ...

It is such a highly contentious issue that once an individual takes a stand on one side or other of the fence, they are instantaneously labeled with the most extreme list of adjectives possible. The right wing has taken on the call for gun rights with the NRA and made it a central plank in their platform."

As it happens, there was a somewhat bigger event in town at the same time: the NRA Convention. Every year at this event, we hear more of the same fear-mongering: 'your guns are going to be outlawed; your guns are going to be confiscated; hunting will be banned; you won’t be able to have a gun in your own home'. "The suit ... alleges that the officers accused Meeks of hiding contraband in his pants, which Meeks denied. One or both of the officers forcibly removed his pants and underwear. After putting on a pair of latex gloves, an officer, against Meeks' will, searched his lower body cavity, the suit said." ...

"The Chicago City Council today approved the $16.5 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit accusing the police department of mistreating suspects."

"More than half a million people could be eligible for cash awards in the settlement of a federal civil rights case, filed in 2004 on behalf people who claimed they were subjected to an 'institutionalized system of police torture' ..."

"The awards are estimated to fall between $90 and $3,000, but the amounts could be reduced if too many people apply."

"... The city would pay the first $15 million in costs, and an insurer would cover the rest, said Mara Georges, the city's top lawyer." ...

"Events leading to the fatal shooting of a 7-year-old girl by a Detroit officer may have been videotaped by a crew for a reality TV series that accompanied police as they searched the victim's home for a murder suspect." ...

"Police have said officers threw a flash grenade through the first-floor window of the two-family home early Sunday and that an officer's gun discharged during a struggle or after a collision with the girl's grandmother. ..."

"Fieger, however, said the official account was full of 'utter fabrications.' He said he has seen a video showing police throwing the grenade and then shooting into the home from the porch. He would not say if the footage came from the A&E crew." ...

"Victoria Healey aims a shotgun at an orange clay target flying through the night sky, pulls the trigger and shatters it. A round of applause erupts. Healey smiles."

"The Phoenix resident attended Ben Avery Desert Roses, a program that introduces women to shotgun-shooting sports at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility, 4044 W. Black Canyon Blvd. The free 2 1/2-hour class, which meets the first and third Thursdays of the month, aims to get women comfortable around firearms by taking lessons about weapons that include handling and shooting clays."

"'It was awesome,' said Healey, who shot a larger weapon for the first time in front of an expert earlier this month. 'It's always fun to try something new.'" ...

"One of the keys to securing a Right to Carry law in the state of Illinois is informing and educating the public about the Right to Carry and how successful it is in the 49 states where concealed or open carry is recognized as lawful."

"IllinoisCarry working together with the Illinois State Rifle Association and Second Amendment Sisters is leading that effort by sponsoring town hall meetings all over the state."

"Many residents of Illinois do not know Illinois is the last and only state which prohibits carrying a firearm for personal protection. With the media bias against the Right to Carry we cannot rely on the mainstream media to get the word out – we must take the message to the public." ...

"There’s a good reason the Founding Fathers authored the documents that some of us still hold dear. There's also a good reason that the Second Amendment came immediately after the First." ...

"When something bad has, or is about to happen to you or your family you have the right to protect yourself and them. This is your responsibility, not the police or anyone else. If you are killed, the police were not liable for your safety unless they were there and did something wrong. They do the best they can but they obviously can’t be everywhere."

"There’s a good reason that few crimes are committed in the presence of police. Can you guess what that is? If you're slow it's because they carry guns." ..

"Sunday, May 18, 1980 found a short crew working in the newsroom at the now-defunct Fishing & Hunting News on Eastlake Avenue in Seattle."

"I was working the Washington edition at the time, and Roland Stephan was on the copy desk. It was about 8:45 a.m. – several minutes after the blast – that Roland came into the newsroom almost shouting, 'Dave. Dave! Mount St. Helens has exploded!'" ...

"... A month before that fateful blast that killed 57 people, F&H News – under my byline – essentially predicted what happened by portraying a 'worst case scenario' that would kill thousands of deer, elk, black bears and other game animals, and destroy the fisheries in the Toutle and lower Cowlitz rivers. ..." ...

The driver went to assist but then had his car keys stolen at gunpoint. He was left shaken but unhurt, police said.

The offenders have been described as black and in their late teens.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so. Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order. — Adolf Hitler, April 11, 1942.
