... "'For many years Cavalry Arms Corporation ('Cavalry') has strived to manufacture and sell quality firearms to the public. We have always strived to put our experience from the field into making quality products that the average shooter can afford, while still bringing innovations to the industry. We are dedicated to providing the best possible products and customer service to the firearms market.'"

"'On February 27, 2008, agents of the [BATFE] executed a federal search warrant on the business premises of Cavalry and on the private residence of its CEO ... The Government has yet to share with the company details of the investigation or the cause precipitating the search warrant. ...'" ...

... "Amon struggles to think."

"'Like, Dude, you mean we can just walk right into any old place they call a Gun-Free Zone or where they put up those 'No Gun' signs and, like, just shoot up the whole freakin' place, but if some hard-ass solid-citizen-type geek is packin' a pistol where the liberal anti-gun nuts say he can't, the guy can, like, drop us in our tracks and ruin all our fun before we even get a good start?'"

"'Yeah,' Coy nods. 'It's like the gun nuts are protecting the anti-gun nuts.'"

"Amon thinks hard again."

"'C'mon, Coy, let's put this stuff away and get to school. Ms. Bookbagg will send us to detention if we're late.'"

"I usually don't debate on the topic of gun control. It's not that I don't have strong feelings on the issue, it's that people who are for unlimited gun rights don't care."

"If you're looking for reasons to restrict access to guns, there are about 89,000 of them (the number of homicides from handguns from 1990-1997). Still, that doesn't convince the defenders of the Second Amendment that there is a problem."

"To put it less tastefully, if someone is willing to take the chance of having his or her kid splatter his brains across the room because it's their constitutional right to own a gun, what chance does some pinko journalism major have of persuading them that guns should be regulated?" ...

Concealed carry unneeded, not a citizen's absolute right

"We've come to the end of a week of protests by the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. I would like to take this moment to point out that there are exceptions to all rights, including the right to speech and the expression of religion. Libel and slander are certainly not protected by the amendments to the Constitution, and you can't kill a person with those. There are exceptions to each of our rights as far as they are concerned with making sure that society as a whole is safe and reasonable for others from those rights." ...

Submitter's Note: As Vin Suprynowicz points out: "Why don't judges, politicians and Republicrats regularly try to convince me that, 'Of course nothing in the 13th Amendment bars a certain reasonable amount of slavery; after all, nothing is absolute! Just as you can't yell 'Fire!' in a crowded theater, so is the government free to impose a reasonable amount of forced labor on the people'?"

"A federal appeals court threw out New York City’s longstanding lawsuit against the gun industry on Wednesday, ruling that a relatively new federal law protects gun makers against such suits."

"The appellate ruling killed perhaps the boldest avenue by which the city has sought to stem the flow of illegal guns into New York: a claim that gun makers and distributors have knowingly flooded illicit, underground markets with their weapons."

"The city's suit, filed in 2000, was upheld in December 2005 ... Judge Weinstein allowed it to move forward, despite protests by gun makers like Beretta U.S.A., Browning Arms, Colt Manufacturing, Glock and Smith & Wesson, all of which cited a federal law that had been passed two months earlier." ...

"A U.S. federal appeals court on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit filed by New York City against gun makers the city targeted in a bid to stop the flow of illegal weapons."

"The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the city's claims against the manufacturers and wholesale sellers of firearms, ruling a federal law granted them immunity. The decision overturns a lower court ruling."

"The city claimed firearms makers and suppliers marketed guns to legitimate buyers knowing those guns would end up in illegal markets. It argued manufacturers should be required to ensure guns did not end up in illegal hands, including monitoring the activities of the dealers they sold to." ...

"Mayor Bloomberg’s anti-gun crusade suffered a defeat yesterday when a federal appellate court rebuffed his attempt to sue manufacturers of firearms."

"The suit, which Mayor Giuliani initiated in 2000 and Mr. Bloomberg has pursued since taking office, claimed that manufacturers such as Beretta, Browning, Glock, and others were indirectly contributing to gun violence in New York City by not regulating how their products were sold. The city had sought a court order requiring the companies to take a variety of steps to monitor gun shows and discourage the sale of more than a single gun at a time to a purchaser. The city claimed that by not policing how guns were sold, the manufacturers were violating a state statute against being a 'criminal nuisance.'" ...

"In a blow to Mayor Bloomberg's campaign to get guns off the streets, a federal appeals court shot down a suit by the city that sought to make firearm makers responsible for the illegal sale of weapons."

"The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan tossed out the lawsuit in light of a 2005 law that Congress crafted in direct response to the city's claims. The 2-to-1 split opinion overturned an earlier ruling by Brooklyn federal Judge Jack Weinstein, who was poised to start a trial in the case when Congress approved the law."

"Bloomberg said he is 'disappointed,' but vowed to continue his fight against illegal guns through another lawsuit targeting crooked dealers and pawnshops." ...

"A college student apparently called 911 from her cell phone shortly before she was murdered but a dispatcher hung up, failed to call back and never sent police to investigate, authorities said Thursday."

"Madison Police Chief Noble Wray said it was too early to know whether a better response could have prevented Brittany Zimmermann's April 2 murder or helped police capture her killer."

"Authorities refused to release the content of the phone call, but Wray said it should have been enough for the Dane County 911 Center to take it seriously."

"'It would be accurate to state that there is evidence contained in the call, which should have resulted in a Madison police officer being dispatched,' Wray said at a news conference. ..." ...

"During oral arguments last month on a case challenging the City of Clyde's ban on concealed carry in its public parks, Republican Paul Pfeifer proved himself dangerously out of touch."

"Pfeifer remarked that he just couldn't understand why someone would want to lug a gun around in a park ... He mocked persons who would chose to exercise their Constitutional right to bear arms for self-defense ... He ignorantly suggested that pedophiles are a greater danger in city parks, drawing laughter when he suggested a bullwhip might be a more appropriate weapon."

"Last week, Fernando Gonzalez had just finished a jog with his dog in the Swan Creek Metropark when he was stabbed in the face by a violent, cold-blooded criminal." ...

"Cornell is a safe place to be — at least it appears that way. Isolated in Upstate New York, it is removed from the violence typically associated with cities. But how safe is Cornell?"

"Isolation does not necessarily guarantee safety. In 1983, a gunman murdered two students in their dormitory room, slipping into the dormitory unnoticed with a rifle. Two years ago, a white Cornell student stabbed a black student from Union College in a racially motivated hate crime."

"While incidences of violence have been few and far between, safety is not a given. In light of the recent acts of gun violence at college campuses across the nation, many Cornellians have experienced anxiety over their safety following these events." ...

"The gun was unloaded, but ammunition was also found, authorities said." ...

"The Department of the Interior proposed a rule change Wednesday that would allow people to carry a concealed firearm in a national park or wildlife refuge."

"The new rule says park visitors would need a permit to carry a concealed weapon, and the state where the park is located must allow guns in its own parks. Concealed weapons are allowed in Washington's state parks."

"Current regulations require weapons to be temporarily inoperable or stowed so they are not easily accessible."

"Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne announced the proposed change. The announcement begins a 60-day public comment period." ...

"In Virginia, guns rule. The most recent General Assembly session proved that. How else can you view a legislature that would seriously consider mixing deadly weapons with whiskey in a bar? How else can you view a proposal that would allow people without a concealed-carry permit to stash a loaded weapon in the glove box of the car?"

"And what about the commonsense proposal to make unlicensed gun dealers follow the same rules as licensed dealers and run background checks on gun buyers at gun shows?"

"Fortunately, neither of the first measures was approved. Unfortunately, the bill that would have restored some sanity to the sales of guns at shows ... also fell short of being approved." ...

"Banquet Number 15 for the Mid Hudson Friends of NRA is in the books. I don't think anyone who was in the room at the Fishkill Holiday Inn Saturday night can say that it didn't meet expectations. That is a mouthful when you consider the expectation level that has been established over the long history of the event."

"'We capped it at 500 people not including the workers,' event co-chair Diane March said. 'We had to turn almost two dozen people away at the door. We felt bad, but the cap was necessary. It made the event far more comfortable than if we had jammed too many people into the room.'" ...
