"With passage by the House earlier today of legislation that will allow legally armed citizens to carry loaded firearms in national parks, Congress has taken a responsible step toward increasing park safety for millions of visitors, whether they are armed or not, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said."

"The measure passed the Senate last week on a lopsided 67-29 vote with 27 Democrats and one Independent joining 39 Republicans. Today's House vote was equally lopsided, with 279 voting in favor of the measure and 147 voting against it."

"'This is a great victory for gun rights and common sense,' said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. ..." ...

Violence Policy Center proves that more guns means less violent crime, murder

... "When it comes to homicide and overall violent crime ... the full dataset shows that 'weak' states are safer: 19.8% lower firearms homicide and 6.8% lower non-firearms homicide rates. Moreover, the 'weak' states had 21.5% less violent crime."

"Bottom line: Suicide rates drive the difference between 'gun death' in VPC’s 'strong' and 'weak' gun law states, but since 'weak' states also have higher rates of non-gun suicide, VPC must either admit there are other causative factors besides gun availability, or admit that if more guns cause more suicides, then guns also cause less homicide and violent crime. As it stands right now, VPC's own data proves that more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens is an effective anti-crime tool."

"Now ... imagine that as you pass an intersection, you look in the rearview mirror and see that a police car has turned onto the street behind you. ... He's just settling in behind you, driving at the same speed as you …"

"Are you comforted by the knowledge that the police are out on patrol, fighting crime? Or do you start to worry ..."

"Only recently, I was one of those misguided souls who thought that the government should enact stricter gun control laws. Count me among the flip-floppers. The recent spate of opinion-page letter writers and the pronouncements of gun advocates has convinced me, and helped me to reach my current state of enlightenment."

"Their argument is unassailable. Our safety will be increased when more people carry firearms. With the proliferation of guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens, criminals will begin to fear real and immediate retribution."

"I disagree, however, with the NRA's desire to have each state pass a concealed weapons law. Weapons should not be concealed. The laws should require that all weapons be carried in plain sight. ..." ...

"President Obama voiced his support for an anti-gun treaty with such wide ranging implications that it could ban everything from assembling guns in kits to repackaging spent shells."

"The treaty was signed by former President Clinton, but never approved by Congress. ... Obama put his weight behind it during his whirlwind tour abroad late last month."

"Yesterday's passage of legislation that revoked the longstanding ban on guns in national parks proved that this treaty would probably fall by the wayside once more ... But the fact that Obama voiced his support for it speaks volumes about the President's view of the Second Amendment, after his famous claim to not 'take away guns' from law-abiding Americans." ...

"The NRA claims the City of San Francisco's 'trigger lock' requirement for handguns in homes violates state laws and the Second Amendment. Plaintiffs include an officer of the San Francisco chapter of Pink Pistols, 'an organization that represents the interests of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered firearms owners.'"

"The NRA claims that requiring handguns to be rendered 'inoperable at all times,' makes it impossible for its members to use guns for self-defense, 'particularly in urgent, life-threatening situations.'"

"The ordinance also prohibits the firing of guns within the home in self-defense as well as the sale of ammunition 'specifically designed for use in self-defense emergencies,' the complaint states." ...

"Today the Texas state senate passed dangerous legislation that would force the carrying of hidden and concealed guns at public universities and colleges. The measure now heads to the House where college students and gun violence prevention advocates are calling for leadership to prevent the bill's passage. The bill threatens the safety of students, professors, and staff and increases the risks of gun violence on college campuses by making weapons more readily available." ...

KABA Note: Of course no one is going to be forced to carry a gun as these loons claim. Besides, to paraphrase Brady Campaign spokesman Peter Hamm: "You don't like the fact that the administration can't ban guns on your college campus? Drop out of school."

"Two men were Concealed Carry instructors from Minnesota where concealed carry is more than accepted."

"One gentleman was a new Wisconsinite from Arizona. He came to the event because he was appalled at WI’s gun laws. Seems that in AZ you are weird if you do NOT have a gun.

"So, you ask, WHY do we need to attend a picnic with guns on our hips?"

"Arkansas Carry gets a big, 'Bravo Zulu' for their work tonight. This could effect the rest of the state's rules on guns in city parks."

"Right now here's the update from their website, 'The Quorum Court agenda tonight was really full, and they moved the Ben Geren gun ban repeal to the very last. The meeting started at 7 pm, but they didn't get to our subject until about 8:30. FULL TEXT BELOW:

Yellowstone National Park wildlife officials say they have killed a wolf that chased people on bicycles and motorcycles on several occasions.

The action taken Tuesday against the yearling male is the first time wildlife managers have been forced to kill a wolf since the animals were reintroduced in Yellowstone in 1995-1996.

Previous attempts to haze it away from park facilities were unsuccessful.

Wildlife managers said the wolf had lost its fear of people, showing up in the Old Faithful area frequently, and posed a safety risk to park visitors.

Officials said the wolf has probably been fed by people.

"One of the last things former President George Bush did before leaving office was to overturn the 25 year old ban on carrying loaded firearms in our National Parks and return your right to self-defense, but only if you had a concealed handgun license and your state allowed guns in parks."

"One of the first things done under President Obama's administration was to suspend that rule change, citing that nobody had done an environmental study. "The National Rifle Association thought McCain, not Obama, should be President. But this probably would never have happened if McCain was President. Gun restrictions seem to get passed more often when Republicans are President." ...

"Obama who is internally torn between his respect for the Constitution, and abhorrence to guns did not seem to me likely to portray the gun advocates as ogres. "Advocates of gun rights are poised to win a Congressional victory that eluded them under a Republican president."

"To the frustration and discouragement of many Democrats, House and Senate lawmakers and aides say it now appears likely that President Obama will this week sign into law a provision allowing visitors to national parks and refuges to carry loaded and concealed weapons."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Texas concealed handgun license holders could carry weapons into public college classrooms and dorms under a bill that has cleared the Texas Senate.

But in a last-minute change, the legislation exempts teaching hospitals run by institutions of higher education.

The bill passed 19-12 Wednesday and now heads to the Texas House. Supporters say the bill reinforces the constitutional right to bear arms and could prevent mass murders such as the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech.

Opponents say it would make campuses more dangerous.
-------

KABA Note: They have no evidence that it makes campuses more dangerous, but that doesn't stop them from saying it.

"Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. today announced his support for ammunition microstamping. Microstamping is a technology that uses a laser to make engravings on the internal mechanism of a gun. This is done so that when the gun is fired, this specific engraving is imprinted onto the casing, identifying which gun the casing came from. This legislation would mean all new models of all semiautomatic firearms manufactured in the state would possess the capability of microstamping ammunition."
