"Jack LeMoult, writing as a guest columnist for the Xenia Daily Gazette, wrote:"

"A gun is like a pair of elevator shoes. It confers artificial stature."
"Using this partial, inappropriate, misleading, and fanciful lead-in, Mr. LeMoult rants about all the ways he would infringe the U.S. Constitution and the rights of almost 300 million people in America so he could feel safer at Virginia Tech ..."

"He then asks the most important question in the entire debate of safety."

"Would America be a safer place if every university, college, technical school, high school, home, and workplace bristled with people armed to the teeth?"

"Hurricane season officially starts June 1st, and those of us who live in the Gulf coastal states are more than a bit apprehensive. For more than one reason. The whole nation remembers what happened with Katrina and Rita. Massive destruction, loss of life, and unbelievable property damage. Oh yeah, confiscation of legally owned firearms by law abiding citizens of New Orleans by the police department, aided by federal agencies, in direct contradiction of the Second Amendment of the Constitution."

"After Katrina hit, the levees failed, and flooded New Orleans. For those who had prepared for such a contingency, and there were some, they were depending on being able to protect themselves and property from the inevitable looting. ..." ...

... "(Author's interlude: Should you be confused about what's going on here ... in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings, there was and continues to be a hue and cry from gun proponents that the tragedy might have been averted if all the 'good guys' were allowed to carry concealed firearms wherever they go. Like many others, I have long suspected these gun people have more issues than a simple loyalty to the Second Amendment lurking about in their psyches--issues I feel are more effectively addressed by satire than the grim statistics. In this fanciful exploration of this peculiar American madness, I have borrowed freely and extensively from the late James Thurber. ...)" ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. — Alexis de Tocqueville
