"Late Monday afternoon an ostensibly apologetic and congenial Keith Thomas, assistant to CEO J.W. Marriott, Jr., told a Grass Roots North Carolina board member that Marriott had 'stepped on a hornet's nest' and promised to remove signs prohibiting lawful firearms in hotels nationwide. Of the Charlotte Marriott City Center ... Thomas promised signs had already been removed."

"But on Tuesday, signs at Marriott properties – including the Charlotte hotel – remained in place ..."

"Some gun rights supporters are now expressing concerns that the claim by Thomas was merely a dodge to deflect the thousands of e-mails and phone calls pouring in from around the country. ..."

"But evidence suggests a more sophisticated corporate disinformation campaign in operation: By putting out the false message that Marriott is removing signs, the corporation sought to have gun rights activists do its bidding by putting out messages to that effect on Internet forums ..."

"In what might explain Marriott International’s decision to prohibit lawful firearms in all of its hotels, a reader recently discovered a link between its Chairman and CEO J.W. Marriott, Jr. and a longtime gun control organization, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence ..." ...

"The Supreme Court is currently hearing McDonald v. Chicago, which could repeal Chicago's longstanding handgun ban. But justice may come too late for an elderly Korean War vet who was simply defending his 83-year-old wife and 12-year-old grandson." ...

"Around 5:00 this morning, 30-something Anthony Nelson broke into the home ... the invader shot at the elderly man with his revolver. The homeowner shot back with his handgun, killing the attacker." ...

"ABC reports that the man may be charged under Chicago’s current law, which bans handgun ownership."

"(An 80-year-old man can be prosecuted for using a handgun for self-defense, but a repeat offender serves maybe a year of a 3-year sentence. In Daley’s world, this is justice.)" ...

"The government’s infringement of constitutional rights in the name of the War on Terror, begun under Bush and now amplified under Obama, threatens to dismantle the constitutional system of checks and balances and demolish the procedural rights that ensure due process."

"Almost every week a new rights-diminution is claimed by Congress or the President as a necessary sacrifice to defeat the terrorists. Disturbingly, however, mere suspicion of wrongdoing is increasingly used as a justification for abridgement of citizens’ constitutional rights."

"The NRA has been lampooned in recent weeks for defending the right of those placed on terror watch lists to purchase firearms. ..." ...

"The case of Otis McDonald, a 76-year-old black man living in a drug-infested neighborhood of Chicago, is now being considered by the U.S. Supreme Court. McDonald's home has been broken into three times, and drug dealers have threatened him. He would like a gun to protect himself."

"Two years ago, in the landmark case District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court affirmed that the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees individuals such as McDonald the right to keep a handgun in their homes for self-defense. In doing so, the court overturned the D.C. handgun ban as unconstitutional. But the court's decision affected only the District of Columbia statute. ..." ...

"The Russians had turned out over a million Mosin-Nagant rifles by 1922 and we’re now seeing the surplus here in the United States."

"J&G sales has the Mosin-Nagant 91/30 listed at a whopping $79.95 and 7.62X54 ammunition for $89.98 for 440 rounds sealed in a tin for long-term storage."

"Sure it's cheap but is it any good? My main beef with this rifle is it is long, 48 inches long."

"Once you get it outside in the open its fine, but if you are forced to maneuver in close quarters ... tactically turning corners would be nearly impossible." ...

That's right, due to NC State law, convention attendees were met with Gun Free Zone signs at the doors, forcing them to either leave their guns in their hotel room ... or leave them hidden away in their vehicles."

"The overwhelmingly anti-gun Chicago political machine has historically enjoyed the support of a similarly anti-gun electorate--the gun culture in the city has, for decades, largely been supplanted by the thug culture. Now, though, there are signs of a 'sea change' in Chicagoans' attitudes about armed self-defense. This new attitude became particularly apparent after the murder last week of Chicago Police officer Thomas Wortham IV, as reported by CBS Chicago."

"In Chicago, retired police officers like the elder Wortham, are allowed to keep their handguns. Why? Of course, that's not a finding that the permit was indeed denied because of Paul Dorr's 'community activism activities and association with the Osceola County Taxpayer Association,' as opposed to (according to the sheriff) 'because of safety concerns raised by members of the public regarding Paul [Dorr]'s demeanor.' It just means that a jury will decide this at trial, unless the case is settled." ...

"An interesting decision, in People v. Javier A. (Cal. Ct. App. May 24). Javier A. was on probation, so when he was detained on suspicion of another crime, the police searched his home; Javier’s father, Emilio A., told the police there were two guns in the home. It turned out that one had been kept — apparently for just two days — in the entertainment cabinet in the living room, which was the room Javier was sleeping in. Javier also 'told the officers that 'he recently checked the gun [in the living room entertainment cabinet] to see if it was loaded.' Based on Javier's having handled the gun, he was convicted of 'constructive possession' of the gun by a minor, in violation of Cal. Penal Code § 12101." ...
