"CORE's interest in this case stems from the fact that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms for self defense is an important civil right that was denied to African Americans under the antebellum Slave Codes, the Black Codes passed just after the Civil War, and under the Jim Crow regimes that persisted into the twentieth century."

"Everyone has their favorite Constitutional Rights that they like. Some believe that the First Amendment, right to free speech, is the foundation of a free society. Others believe the Second Amendment, right to bear arms, is critical for the populace to be protected from the government. It amazes me that our forefathers could anticipate genetic splicing and the creation of men with giant grizzly arms all of the way back in the 1700s, but I digress."

"For me, I have always felt that the Fourth Amendment, protection from unlawful search and seizure, was an incredible design against the overreaching of the government into the privacy of the people ..." ...

"FOXNews.com recently reported that lawmakers across the country are debating whether universities should let students and faculty with permits carry their concealed weapon on campus. Those who want to put an end to such gun-free zones have found an unlikely hero in a petite, soft spoken, young woman who wonders why colleges protect most Constitutional rights, but not the one that matters most when staring into the face of a violent criminal." ...

"Owners of modern sporting rifles (MSR)--those rifles based on the AR platform--are among the most passionate gun owners."

"Most shoot their rifles often and wish they had time to shoot them even more. Most use them for target shooting. Most own multiple modern sporting rifles. Most enjoy accessorizing them."

"Given these and other insights into ownership, it's no wonder MSRs were among the hottest sellers during the firearms sales boom from late 2008 through early 2010." ...

"You may recall that TTAG reviewed the Ruger SP101 3" as a potential newbies’ first gun. I looked to the stainless steel Ruger revolver for four reasons: ease of operation, low-recoil (comfortable range time), .38/.357 caliber (economical practice and devastating stopping power) and more-than-merely-adequate accuracy (three-inch barrel). Three factors prevented the SP101 from earning the ultimate 'start here' accolade ..." ...

"You hear an awful lot about 'muzzle flip' in the gunblogosphere. Much of it right here. At the risk of preempting an Ask Foghorn post, I’ll say this about that. You can have a little bit of this (the handgun’s muzzle or barrel 'flipping' upwards after you pull the trigger) or a little bit of that (a heavy gun that reduces muzzle rise). At the risk of quoting former Prime Minister Tony Blair, there is a third way. Learn to work with—or at least not against—muzzle flip . . ." ...

"Sometimes good enough stops being good enough. We want the best, price no object. Hence Rolex, Ferrari, and Ares Gear. I bought one of Ares Gear’s $80 Ranger belts recently. By recently, I mean two months ago. I finally received the belt a few days ago, after a bunch of tailor gnomes finished sewing it together. It was the first time I’d commissioned custom clothing. It was worth the wait. The Ranger belt is the finest belt I own. Of course, my criteria for a tactical belt are a little extreme . . ." ...

Three Reasons Why Constitutional Carry (No CCW Permit) is Not Insane

"'[Wisconsin] Republicans are considering two versions of the concealed carry law,' columnist Eugene Kane writes for jsonline.com, 'which I would label thusly: There’s the 'sane' bill and the 'insane' bill. The sane version – which I oppose – would allow gun owners to apply for permits and receive required training to carry concealed weapons in most public areas but with some restrictions. The insane version – which I vehemently oppose – would allow gun owners to carry concealed weapons in public without any permit or training required.' So why is the second version bonkers? Kane reckons it's so obvious he doesn't really need to explain his position . . ." ...

Lever-Action Ballistics: .30-30 vs. .357 Magnum

"Elmer Keith, Phillip B. Sharpe, Colonel D. B. Wesson developed the .357 Magnum cartridge in 1934. The first of the 'Magnum' pistol cartridges, it was a big hit. Literally. While there's still some debate over the cartridge’s ability to create hydrostatic shock, if you're looking for a highly effective, commonly available handgun caliber for self-protection, .357 is a perfectly defensible choice. Handgun hunters use the cartridge to take game up to the size of small deer. The .357's handgun ballistics are impressive indeed, but how much more impressive does it get from an extra fourteen inches of barrel? Now what should we compare it to . . ." ...

"On March 30, the 30th anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, Jim Brady, who sustained a debilitating head wound in the attack, and his wife, Sarah, came to Capitol Hill to push for a ban on the controversial 'large magazines.' Brady, for whom the law requiring background checks on handgun purchasers is named, then met with White House press secretary Jay Carney. During the meeting, President Obama dropped in and, according to Sarah Brady, brought up the issue of gun control, 'to fill us in that it was very much on his agenda,' she said."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands? — Patrick Henry, 3 J. Elliot, Debates in the Several State Conventions 45, 2d ed. Philadelphia, 1836
