MN: New Minnesota Gun Law Hits the Workplace

"Employers in Minnesota are evaluating how they will comply with a new carry law effective May 28."

"The new gun law allows public and private employers to prohibit employees from possessing a gun 'while acting in the course and scope of employment,' but says those policies cannot prohibit employees or others from lawfully possessing a firearm in the firms' parking facilities."

-------
But since MN is an "at will" state, they can still fire you for it, just not give that as a reason.

"When Mall of America stores closed Tuesday night, the sign patrol got busy."

"Just hours before Minnesota's new gun law took effect, night-shift workers began posting 'no guns allowed' signs."

" 'Mall of America has always prohibited guns on its property. We will continue to enforce this policy with high-profile signs at all entrances,' said Maureen Bausch, the mall's vice president of business and development."

-------
We're fairly sure criminals won't heed those rules, Maureen. Will the mall take responsibility for disarming its customers and tenants and leaving them at the mercy of armed thugs?

"Opponents of Minnesota's newly liberalized gun permitting law have been lightning quick on the draw in raising legal objections and defiant challenges. As this was written, the Pawlenty administration and lawmakers were moving to take a last shot at improving the law. But concerns will remain."

"DFLers eager to target political issues among this year's Republican trophies have pulled the trigger on the gun law, too. Senate Majority Leader John Hottinger, DFL-St. Peter, says the administration's admission of problems with the gun law reflects an unseemly haste by the governor in signing a flawed bill pushed hard by gun advocates."

Fourth and fifth letters on the page:

In response to Barbara Johnson (letter, May 22):

Yes, she is wrong. Numerous court cases all over the country (Silver vs. Minneapolis, locally) have held that the police have no duty to protect individual citizens. In addition, they do not have to respond to 911 calls, even if the dispatcher says that someone is on their way.

I wonder how she feels about politicians (protected as they are by armed guards) who have said for years that we do not need a firearm for protection, that our personal protection is what the police are for.

It cost Wisconsin $100,000 to "feel better" after the school murders in Columbine, CO. But it hasn't made anyone safer.

"A $50,000-a-year Wisconsin-run hotline for kids to report guns in schools gets seven calls in two years. State Sen. Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) said none of the seven calls the hotline has received so far has been legitimate, and five of them were pranks."

Even so, there's resistance to ending the failed program.

"The Territory Government yesterday introduced tough new hand gun laws into Parliament, but said there was not a hand gun problem in the Territory."

"Police Minister Paul Henderson said the laws would be introduced as part of national hand gun law changes demanded by the Federal Government after a shooting at a Melbourne university last year. The Firearms Amendment Bill 2003 aimed to restrict the ownership of hand guns, increase the responsibility of hand gun owners and limit the type and calibre of those available to sports shooters. Antique firearms, currently exempt from the Firearms Act, would also have to be registered and their owners licensed. It is expected there will be 1500 fewer hand guns in the NT as a result of the new laws." ...

"Last month, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled that Ferndale can't add restrictions to state rules on where gun owners can carry concealed weapons. Ferndale has asked the state Supreme Court to reconsider."

"The city enacted a ban on guns in city buildings in 2001. City Manager Tom Barwin said no citations have been issued. Detroit, East Lansing and other communities have passed similar laws. State law already bans concealed weapons in courtrooms, schools and bars." ...

"Ferndale has common sense on its side. There's just no good reason to pack a pistol in city libraries, youth recreation centers or City Hall, where tempers often run hot. Cities should have the right to protect their citizens from harm, and themselves from liability, in buildings they own."

"My initial reaction to this new law is, what’s the need? Was there a public outcry by the citizens of Minnesota for this legislation? I don’t think so. The bottom line is a group of lobbyists who spent a lot of money got what they wanted and that’s what’s disappointing. Our legislators listened to the lobbyists. They didn’t listen to us. The four main law enforcement associations in the state, the Minnesota Police Chiefs’ Association, the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association, the Minnesota County Attorneys’ Association and the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers’ Association were all against the bill. This was strictly politics."

The whining sheriff apparently missed the class in school that defines what "inalienable rights" are. This hanky-wringing bleating shows just how little respect he has for the Constitution and for his oath of office.

"I can't stand politics as they have become. I, for one, would like to just have them tell me what they are for or against and then stick to it. When he was running for office, President Bush said that he was pro-gun and pro-gun rights. Then he comes out with the 'assault gun' ban. I've been told that this is just a political ploy to get votes from the other side and that he already has a deal with Congress not to send him the bill to sign. To that I say, dumb idea. This is the kind of game that gets us in trouble every time. Stand for something and win or lose on the merits of that, for once. If the President doesn't think that the gun owners in America give him enough help to get elected then say so, perhaps that can change. At least it would be honest. This old 'say anything to get elected, then do what you want anyway' is not for me. We had eight years of that with Clinton."

"The results for 2002 are in and the outcome, regrettably, hasn't changed from 2001. An examination of murder statistics for U.S. cities with populations of more than 1 million shows that, for the eighth year of the last nine, Chicago suffered the highest murder rate."

"The city of Denver misfired in the legal challenge it filed Friday against the state's new law establishing uniform standards for issuing concealed weapon permits. But it was squarely on target with the second part of its suit, aimed at preserving gun ordinances with purely local effect."

"During the 12-year tenure of Mayor Wellington Webb, Denver has automatically denied virtually all requests for concealed carry permits - even those from victims of violent crimes. When The Post checked last summer, the city had issued just six permits - all to employees of the city and county, five to city building inspectors and one to a county judge. Thus, in a city of more than half a million people, not one ordinary citizen received a concealed-carry permit."

"But it could just as easily serve as the motto for the whole Democratic Party: 'Vote for us -- we kinda, sorta disagree.' The Party leaders are so timid, spineless, and lacking in confidence that to compare them to jellyfish would be an insult to invertebrates."

"Call them the pusillanimous opposition."

"These dithering poltroons are so paralyzed by the fear of doing or saying something that could be turned against them in GOP attack ads they've rendered themselves utterly impotent when it comes to mounting any kind of challenge to President Bush on the two most important issues of the day: tax cuts and Iraq."

"Larry Pratt, of Gun Owners of America, asked Washington, DC Mayor Anthony Williams several questions (through his press flack, Tony Bullock) to which he did not get an answer because Williams had no answer. One is this one: 'Private, innocent citizens in your apartment houses and elsewhere are being shot and murdered but can't shoot back because you forbid them to have guns for self defense! Your gun ban laws haven't prevented shootings. They've only prevented your citizens from shooting back and defending themselves!' "

"Next fall, assignments, graded work, weights and computation of student grades will be the same as in the past. In the interest of promoting diversity and multiculturalism, there'll be one difference: I will compute averages by race. I'll compute a class average for white males, and another for white females. Group averages won't be computed for black male and female students, and other non-white students."
