"The pistol-packing pilot was supposed to be the last line of defense against a terrorist who managed to get into a cockpit."

"But now, more than two years after Congress sanctioned a training program to deputize aviators and allow them to carry guns in the cockpit, it's believed that only about 5,000 - a little more than 5 percent of the estimated 95,000 commercial pilots in the country - are armed while they fly."

"Pilot advocacy groups claim there's a pent-up demand of perhaps as many as 40,000 pilots willing to arm themselves, but they charge that the Bush administration has deliberately undermined the program by making training inconvenient and insisting on an awkward protocol for transporting weapons."

"Sen. Dianne Feinstein announced Friday the introduction of legislation that would classify .50-caliber rifles in the same category as machine guns or sawn-off shotguns."

"The legislation would change the .50-caliber's classification as a 'long gun,' requiring all future sales to go through a licensed gun dealer and a background check on the buyer, Howard Gantman, a Feinstein spokesman, reported. If the legislation passed, the Internal Revenue Service would also record all future purchases of the weapon under the National Firearms Act."

"Civil liberties and gun rights supporters opposed the measure on privacy grounds, saying they fear driver's licenses will evolve into a national identification card."

"In 2000, Jews For the Preservation of Firearms Ownership posted an article by Dr. Sarah Thomson which explained in psychological terms exactly how gun control advocates shield themselves from reality . When I read this, I thought it was an interesting idea, but it seemed a little extreme to say that the bulk of gun control advocates are feel the way they do not merely because of ignorance, but because of complete irrationally."

"My experiences with antigun nuts since then, and a bit of thought, have made me realize just how nutty these people really are. ..."

"The silence from the gun control supporters in this nation has been deafening the past few years. Anyone seeking a debate over gun rights and the Second Amendment could have, at one time, found a plethora of cases to be fired up about. Something happened during the 2000 election though, that changed this." ...

"Just this past week however, the volume over gun control and self-defense rights was suddenly turned back up. Gun control leaders like Sarah Brady was back in the public eye demonizing gun and concealed carry laws. It was as if Liberals everywhere had suddenly remembered how much they loathed guns. So what was it that jarred their memories loose?"

" 'You had to trust each other to cross under or over and only move when the other person moves, so the trust, when somebody's got a loaded gun at your back ... it made us trust each other quickly,' Jolie said in the magazine, on newsstands May 10."

"This not only convinced Pacheco of the senselessness of war, it helped mold his opinion about guns later in life. For him, gun ownership is an extension of war."

"So for the last two decades, Pacheco has been pressing for a gunless society in a country obsessed with guns. For that, he has been called naïve, even insane. In the world he wants to create, no one can carry a gun outside his home unless he is a policeman or soldier on duty."

"The national NRA convention featured a great deal of glitz, with Hollywood celebrities on hand to lend some glamour to the proceedings. There were some fairly exotic weapons showcased, few of which I had seen before."

"Of course, I am outdated. My own firearm experience was limited to very early teenage ownership of a .410 bird gun and a .22 target rifle. The Army widened my firearm world considerably, introducing me to the M-1 Garand, all nine and a half pounds of it, the M-1 Carbine, considerably lighter, the submachine gun designed by Thompson, but not, unfortunately, with the famous round drum favored by gangsters in the 1920s and 1930s. It had an elongated clip and a tendency to ride up on long bursts."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Those, who have the command of the arms in a country are masters of the state, and have it in their power to make what revolutions they please. [Thus,] there is no end to observations on the difference between the measures likely to be pursued by a minister backed by a standing army, and those of a court awed by the fear of an armed people. — Aristotle, as quoted by John Trenchard and Water Moyle, An Argument Shewing, That a Standing Army Is Inconsistent with a Free Government, and Absolutely Destructive to the Constitution of the English Monarchy [London, 1697].
