"HARRY CARPENTER suffers from pulmonary fibrosis and wears oxygen tubes for much of the day, but that didn't stop him from fending off two knife-wielding burglars. Police say two young men barged into his home, one forcing him at knife point to sit on a couch while the other demanded money from his wife, Jackie. When Jackie pretended to faint, Harry's captor went to investigate. Harry sneaked into the laundry room where he kept an unloaded .22-caliber rifle he's owned since his youth. ... The intruder returned before Harry could load his firearm, but Harry racked the bolt home as if it were loaded. 'He yelled out, 'Let's go, he's got a gun!' Harry recalled. The suspects fled the scene. (Savannah Morning News, Savannah, Ga.)" ...

"A campaign by gun rights advocates to make it easier to use deadly force in self-defense is rapidly winning support across the country, as state after state makes it legal for people who think their lives are in danger to shoot down an attacker, whether in a carjacking or on the street."

"The law has spurred debate about whether allowing deadly force protects against lawlessness or spurs more crime. Supporters say it is an unambiguous answer to random violence, while critics -- including police chiefs and prosecutors -- warn that criminals are more likely to benefit than innocent victims."

"Ten states this year have passed versions of the law. Florida last year became the first state to do so." ...

"Ottawa's 700 frontline police patrol officers will now rapidly attack when an 'active killer' is on the loose and engage the shooter with new deadly close-quarters-battle weapons used for military combat."

"Police are sometimes in the right spot at the right time. On Saturday, a young man opened fire with a gun in a busy Oklahoma City mall, injuring a teen before he was shot and killed by an off-duty sheriff's deputy."

"More often, though, the killer or killers quickly carry out their slaughter before tactical officers are ready to move in."

"Police now know the first 10 to 20 minutes are crucial. Instead of containing the suspect, the new objective is to hunt him down and 'neutralize' him." ...

"The National Rifle Association has stock arguments it uses when anyone suggests new firearm regulations, including one-handgun-per-month purchase limits."

"Two bills languishing in Pennsylvania propose such a limit. The legislation is meant to make it harder to buy handguns - the weapon most often used in Philadelphia homicides - through a transaction known as a straw purchase." ...

"Handguns bought this way don't end up in the homes of law-abiding citizens who want to defend their families against intruders."

"A handgun purchase limit would help to dry up the illegal market that sells to criminals and young people."

The teenager was quickly seized after witnesses pointed him out to security officials. FULL TEXT BELOW:

There seems to be some confusion among those who support the continued existence of the controversial long-gun registry. Advocates of the program are quick to point out the benefits of mandatory criminal background checks, gun safety training and safe storage laws. What they do not mention is that none of these has anything to do with the registry.

Background checks and training are required to obtain a Firearms Possession and Acquisition License, the permit needed to purchase guns and ammunition. These regulations are not being targeted for change and will not be affected by repealing the disastrous and completely useless long-gun registration program.
