"You’re so dedicated to this way of life, what do you say to your critics, to those who decry gun ownership?"

"Well, I get such total gratification that I inspire them to speak up; the statements my enemies make clearly indicate just how right I am. The people who condemn me for being on the board of directors of the NRA, are literally condemning the basic right of self-defence. How could a decent person ever recommend a law that only the decent people will be helpless? Gun control is about guaranteeing that good people will be helpless! Who could condone such a thing? ..."

"Boston police say more and more old guns like the one found in Dorchester are turning up on the streets. Back in the 1990s, police say, guns used in crimes were usually new. But ever since the Brady Bill became law in 1994, anyone buying from a licensed gun dealer has been required to undergo a background check. The law does not apply to sales between individuals, and most states permit private sales at gun shows and flea markets, without records or background checks."

"According to Boston Police Superintendent Paul Joyce, criminals now favor older guns that have passed discreetly from owner to owner for many years before they ended up as crime guns."

"The Maryland governor's race has hardly begun, and Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. is under fire for his stance on guns -- from both sides."

"In the past few weeks, Democrats and advocates of stricter gun laws have portrayed the Republican as a friend to gun owners, dating to his 1996 vote as a congressman to repeal the federal ban on assault weapons. Two years ago, they say, Ehrlich worked behind the scenes to block a similar assault weapons bill in the Maryland General Assembly."

"But plenty of gun owners say that although Ehrlich's almost four years as governor have represented a welcome breather from the kind of aggressive gun control initiatives enacted by a succession of Democratic governors, they have been disappointed because he has not done more for them."
