"A gun-control group and its political action committee have paid a $12,000 fine to settle a campaign finance case from the 2000 election."

"At issue were ads and endorsements by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and its Brady Voter Education Fund involving various Democratic candidates in 2000."

"The American Conservative Union, in a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, accused the Brady organizations of making illegal corporate contributions to the Democrats' campaigns."

"When it comes to rancorous debates in which the two sides routinely talk past each other, gun control ranks up there with abortion and the death penalty. Last year Abigail A. Kohn, an anthropologist trained at the University of California at San Francisco, bravely waded into this battle with Shooters: Myths and Realities of America’s Gun Cultures (Oxford University Press). A sympathetic portrait of gun enthusiasts in Northern California, the book ends with a plea for a calmer discussion of guns and crime. Reason asked Kohn to summarize her argument and invited responses from three people with an interest in this area: civil liberties lawyer Don B. Kates, journalist Wendy Kaminer, and law professor Michael I. Krauss."

"The left-leaning media like to point out that their polls show that even gun owners support 'sensible gun legislation.' The problem is simply that is an oxymoron, at least with some in our state legislature."

"Here are two examples of gun control bills that are just plain ignorant, and what is most frightening is that both of them are moving toward floor votes in their respective houses."

"I talk about guns with people on occasion at gatherings. Some of them are responsible gun owners who are knowledgeable on the laws and go to a firing range regularly to practice."

"Then there are folks who live in a dream world that believe that just having a gun in the house or car somehow protects them from harm. That makes no sense especially since many of these guns have been stashed in dresser drawers or glove compartments from the time they were purchased and haven't been fired once. A person with this mindset will most likely make the wrong decision when confronted with trouble."

"And that's the toy. Most police officers say they'd have a tough time, especially in when surprised by it in a high stress situation....The gun even comes with a real laser site."

"For a company that packs so much heat, Serbu Firearms keeps a low profile."

"There's no sign on its front door. The place is unobtrusively tucked in a row of auto body shops in a no-frills industrial park next to the Veterans Expressway in Town 'N Country."

"Nothing would tip you off that, behind that unmarked door, local entrepreneur Mark Serbu and his crew are manufacturing powerful .50-caliber rifles, right on the edge of what's legal."

"The magazine writer had already chosen his headline - 'Shootout in the Gunshine State' - so it's fortunate that the football game turned out to be one of the best ever. Shaking his head, he told me he was going to write in SI how one of the first folks he'd met upon landing in Miami was a filling station attendant with a gun on his hip."

"Perhaps feeling obliged to defend my home state, I pointed out that (a) a holstered pistol is not a concealed weapon, (b) although the law had been signed, the state was not yet issuing 'conceal to carry' permits and (c) there were probably guns under the counters of some gas stations and convenience stores he had stopped at on his way up here. But southerners can't talk guns to New Yorkers because they've made their city so safe."

"Mark Yost, the Pioneer Press' staff mouthpiece for the National Rifle Association, has surprised nobody by stating that any law restricting guns is bad. Last week, his case in point (column, April 26) was the assault weapons ban, which expired in September. I agree with Yost on one issue — that the assault weapons ban was imperfect. The criminal use of banned weapons dropped during the ban. But the criminal use of non-banned assault-type weapons increased. Yost's solution to an imperfect law with loopholes is … you guessed it. Loosen all gun laws further." ...

"This time, just like last time, I say that conceal and carry "doesn't have much effect on crime one way or the other." And this time, I still think it's a bad idea to give handgun permits to people who have been convicted of stalking, harassment, coercion or DWI, as this law does. I still think it's a bad idea to give handgun permits to people who have displayed delusional behavior, as this law does. I still think it's a bad idea to treat trespass with a firearm like a parking violation — as this law does."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our Founding Fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the second amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of the country. For that reason I believe the second amendment will always be important. --JOHN F. KENNEDY
