"Commercial jet pilots aren’t the only ones getting certified to carry weapons in the cockpit. Now those who command cargo planes are also training to defend themselves against inflight terrorist attacks."

"Those who pass the rigorous Transportation Security Administration course in Artesia, N.M., will become federal flight deck officers (FFDOs) and will be authorized to use deadly force to protect the cockpit if necessary." ...

"This is the first month that cargo pilots are joining the class, but they’re doing it voluntarily and at their own expense."

"The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) today released its annual report, Protect Children Instead of Guns 2004, detailing gun deaths among children and teenagers throughout the country. As the threat of gun violence grows, the report helps show why the Bush Administration and Congress should renew the ten-year-old Assault Weapons Ban. ...Children and teens continue to die from gun violence in America at unprecedented levels in comparison to the rest of the industrialized world. Using the most recent annual data, CDF's report shows that 2,911 children and teens die from gun violence each year - one child every three hours. ...Thanks in part to the Assault Weapons Ban, gun deaths among children and teens has decreased since 1994."

-------
How many of these "children" are gang-bangers? How many of these deaths are suicides? And how many are actually committed with banned "assault" weapons.

This particular press release attempts to link the "assault" weapons ban with the deaths of children, without actually establishing a connection. It mentions ambiguous deaths by firearms and attempts to promote the unconstitutional "assault" weapons ban by using this generalization.

"As someone who used to work for the NRA, ...I believe....the NRA does not represent mainstream American gun owners."

"Even more interesting is the fact that the NRA doesn't speak for even its most die-hard members. NRA leaders like Wayne LaPierre and Kayne Robinson are pragmatists. ..."

"...NRA leaders were willing to accept a renewed assault weapons ban in exchange for winning passage of the gun industry immunity bill. But when the far-right grassroots found out, Wayne's world came crashing down."

"Today the tension is boiling over in a more public way. Die-hard pro-gun advocates tend to be more libertarian than conservative, and many are organizing against President Bush -- much to the dismay of NRA leaders."

"The most profound impact the next president will have on the direction of the country, aside from prosecuting the war on terror, pertains to the nomination of judges. Absent retirements before the November election, the next president will likely nominate between two and four justices to the Supreme Court, as well as scores of judges to the federal district and appeals courts." ...

"Kerry has pledged to nominate only pro-choice judges to the Supreme Court. ..."

-------
The majority of the current Supreme Court justices were appointed by Republicans (7 out of 9), and President Bush appointed Reggie Walton - a U.S. District Judge, who declared that "the Second Amendment does not confer an individual right to possess firearms."

Looks like we should worry just as much about Bush's Court as we do about Kerry's.

"Horrific abuses, some similar to those revealed in Iraq, regularly occur in U.S. prisons with little national attention or public outrage, human rights activists said on Thursday." ...

"For example, in September 1996, guards at the Brazoria County jail in Texas staged a drug raid on inmates that was videotaped for training purposes."

"The tape showed several inmates forced to strip and lie on the ground. A police dog attacked several prisoners; the tape clearly showed one being bitten on the leg. Guards prodded prisoners with stun guns and forced them to crawl along the ground. Then they dragged injured inmates face down back to their cells." ...

"Two of those allegedly involved in the abuse of Iraqis were U.S. prison guards. ..."
