Italians move toward protecting self-defense

"Unnoticed by the establishment media in the United States, Italy is taking big steps towards greater protection of fundamental human rights, as it looks to significantly change old laws that have infringed the right of self-defense."

In Italy, the Minister of Defense, Antonio Martino, recently announced his support for private gun ownership. "Gun control disarms law-abiding citizens, not criminals," he said."

"Gun trafficking is a major problem in West Africa, as dealers recycle weapons by moving them from one place to another, the U.N. Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN) reported April 30."

"According to Napoleon Abdulai of the United Nations project against illicit arms trafficking in West Africa, there are an estimated 80 million illegal arms in the region. Many of the firearms are in the hands of armed rebel groups, militias, vigilante groups, and armed bandits."

"Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Germany's 16 regional leaders, anxious to prevent a repetition of the Erfurt school massacre, agreed on Monday to tighten a draft gun control law already on its way to the statute books."

"Politicians have been clamouring for changes to the law since April 26, when 19-year-old Robert Steinhaeuser shot dead 13 teachers, two students and a policeman at his old school in Erfurt and shot himself in Germany's worst post-war mass murder."

McCain and Lieberman have joined forces in a radio ad campaign advocating background checks on gun show sales. Way to look out for us, Johnny.

Barnes, president of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, today blasted U.S. Attorney General Ashcroft's official reversal of the United State's long standing position on the Second Amendment. The new position -- which was included as a footnote in two U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) briefs that were filed with the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday, May 6 -- reflects Ashcroft's personal view that the Second Amendment "broadly protects the rights of individuals".

"The Justice Department, reversing decades of official government policy on the meaning of the Second Amendment, told the Supreme Court for the first time late Monday that the Constitution "broadly protects the rights of individuals" to own firearms."

"He told the prosecutors to inform the department's criminal division of any case that raised a Second Amendment question so the department could "coordinate all briefing in those cases" and enforce federal law "in a manner that heeds the commands of the Constitution."

--While this is not a wholesale edict, this may give us a tool to overturn many horrible laws.
