"[In] this peaceful and safety-conscious country, which boasts one of Europe's lowest crime rates: firearms are as ubiquitous ... as chocolate."

"Weapons and ammunition are routinely issued to, and kept at home by, Swiss men aged between 20 and 42 for their military service. The idea of having guns at home is tied to the long-held belief that enemies could invade tiny Switzerland fairly quickly, so every reservist had to be able to fight his way to his regiment's assembly point."

"It seems that Americans just aren't very enthusiastic about their government's efforts to protect the homeland. So commiserated hundreds of government and big business Pooh-Bahs at the recent "Homeland Security 2005" seminar, agreeing that they have "failed to engage the American people."

Arlington: "Starting Sept. 1, police may stop responding to residential and commercial alarms unless a crime is independently verified [by a private security guard]. It would not affect panic alarm calls, holdup alarm calls or 911 calls, which ... would still be considered high-priority incidents."

"It's the [alarm] industry's responsibility." -- City Attorney Jay Doegey

"But what kind of message are the police sending by saying they won't respond?" -- Malcolm Reed

"The Chicago Police Department's Internal Affairs Division has launched an investigation to determine why a South Side woman who made three calls to 911 to report that her husband was violating an order of protection was murdered before police arrived on the scene."

"...the question is why did officers take 17 minutes to arrive at her home in the 10600 block of South La Salle."

Another Tragic Reason To Change Chicago's Unconstitutional CCW Laws.

"A petition, seeking to give flight crews the right to defensive weapons in the cockpit, was recently rejected by the Bush Administration. It was signed by hundreds of thousands of commercial flight crew members, who can be assumed to have a pretty good grasp on the issues involved."

"I can understand why Sarah Brady is opposed to pilots having guns in the cockpits of airliners -- she is opposed to anyone having any means of self-defense."

"I'm mad as hell," is a line from an old movie I watched years ago. It fits the way I'm feeling today. I was alerted to, and read a posting by a fellow NRA member Detective Ron Willis, a retired police officer from the Gresham, Oregon Police Department. It seems that Ron attended the National Rifle Association Annual Meeting in Reno, Nevada."

"By their own admission, Tim and Darlene Baker were pretty smug in the belief that their teen-age daughter, Jennifer, was doing fine and that the guns they kept in their home were no danger to the girl because they had taught her firearm safety. That was five years ago, just before Jennifer used one of the guns to take her own life."

"We relaxed our guard. We didn't have an 'accident.' We had a fatal shooting because we did not continue to practice responsible gun ownership..."

"The relationship between much of the media and the gun culture "has been for so long so hostile, it's basically an armed camp," said Michael Bane, a Colorado-based author and consultant to the National Shooting Sports Foundation."

"But the foundation seeks to calm that hostility by inviting journalists to day long, gun training sessions in which they learn from experts -- award winning competitive shooters -- how to target shoot."

"By solid margins, California voters support abortion rights and gun control, which is good news for Gov. Gray Davis and a potential problem for his Republican opponent, businessman Bill Simon. The new Field Poll also shows that voters aren't eager to change their views on those potentially divisive issues."

"The actress who plays the AOL computer girl in the TV advertisements has been attacked and mugged while on her way home in south London."

More from the UK HCI Paradise. Don't look for sympathy from AOL, young lady-- they fire employees who possess the means of self defense. Don't look to your liberal democrat father either-- his sort would rather see women raped and killed than armed-- and prosecuted if they defy his will. Maybe he can arrange a subject-subsidized bodyguard...?

"The Justice Department's fresh assertion of individual gun-ownership rights reflects the heavy influence Republican conservatives play in shaping the Bush administration's position on a wide array of social policies."

"But, Olson said in the briefs, "the current position of the United States is that the Second Amendment more broadly protects the rights of individuals, including persons who are not members of any (state) militia or engaged in active military service or training, to possess and bear their own firearms." ... "subject to reasonable restrictions designed to prevent possession by unfit persons or to restrict the possession of types of firearms that are particularly suited to criminal misuse."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all — security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again. — EDWARD GIBBON [On ancient Athens]
