Few would dispute that a gun, when used improperly, can be dangerous to your health. But a new study shows that guns, even when fired as safely as possible, can hurt you. The study by an IUPUI scientist and colleagues found that firing a gun at a shooting range, either indoors or outdoors, releases a high level of lead-filled dust that coats the shooter. This dust can enter the shooter’s bloodstream, potentially resulting in elevated lead exposure. Or, a shooter who has young children can bring this dust home on his or her skin or clothes, exposing the children to the lead. |

Trevor Brooks, a convicted murderer who attended a Silicon Valley entrepreneurship program after getting out of prison, has an idea he thinks could reduce the rate of gun violence in Baltimore: Let people use an app to turn in guns and make bail. Given the choice between giving up a gun or sitting in Central Booking, "they're going to turn the guns in as fast as they can," Brooks said.

The Texas Senate has approved allowing concealed carry permit holders to have guns in their locked cars parked outside schools. Sen. Bryan Hughes' bill was approved Monday 25-6. A similar, bipartisan measure has cleared a committee in the state House but not yet reached a floor vote in that chamber.

Firearm sales hit a record high last year as the FBI processed more than 27.5 million background checks on gun buyers. This year, sales have eased up a bit, but they're still on track to hit the second-highest number ever. Despite the dramatic increase in the number of guns in circulation, though, there was an interesting statistic that dropped. No, it wasn't the crime rate, which, although substantially lower than it was decades ago, has been inching higher in recent periods. Instead it was the number of accidental firearms fatalities. |

A Cleveland man is going after the city of Cleveland's police department for what's rightfully— Constitutionally-stamped— his. That's the gist of a recent lawsuit filed on behalf of Brian Bridges against the city in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas court. Following a 2015 justified shooting, Bridges claims the city are still holding onto his firearm and wont' return it even though the case is closed.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and local police are investigating the theft of a large number of guns being delivered to a sporting goods store in Olive Branch. A combined 61 handguns and six long guns were being delivered to Academy Sports on Goodman Road, according to Olive Branch Police Chief Don Gammage. He said the truck driver had fallen asleep behind the store on Sunday night, awaiting an early morning delivery Monday. When he woke up, he and Academy Sports employees found that the seals and locks had been cut off the truck, and the guns and a small amount of ammunition were gone. |

Randy Drescher was standing his ground when he fired three shots and killed a stranger who had thrown a traffic cone at him in front of a Milwaukee police station, Drescher's attorney told a jury Monday. Drescher, 66, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the August death of Reed Carlsen, 42, of West Allis during a random encounter in front of the District 6 station of the Milwaukee Police Department, where Drescher immediately went inside, reported the shooting and was arrested. |

The Domino's Pizza driver who shot and killed a 16-year-old robbery suspect Saturday night in Mesquite has a valid concealed weapons permit from Arizona, police said. Authorities originally said the driver, whose name hasn't been released, did not have a handgun license. Lt. Brian Parrish, a Mesquite police spokesman, said the officer who made the initial report wrote that the driver had drawn a concealed-carry pistol. Police searched the driver's name to see if he had a Texas concealed carry permit and learned he did not. But an investigator determined that the driver does have a permit from Arizona, which is also valid in Texas, Parrish said.

A Milford man says at his arraignment in district court Monday that self-defense was behind the fatal stabbing of a Holliston man and severe injury of another Milford man on Sunday afternoon. The Milford Daily News reports Jeremy Robin, 19, of 19 Green St., Apt. 2, is accused of fatally stabbing Timothy Commerford, 21, of Holliston, and severely stabbing Richard Garcia, 54, of Milford. He has been charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; it is unclear if he will be charged with more crimes. |

The Florida Legislature has passed a bill that amends Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground self-defense law. Senate Bill 128, which was first passed by the Senate in March, seeks to shift the burden of proof from the defendant to the prosecutor. As it currently stands, the Stand Your Ground law requires defendants to prove during the pretrial hearing that they are immune from criminal prosecution under the self-defense law.

A woman found covered in blood hiding in the woods near County Road 484 will not be charged for the February stabbing death of a 58-year-old man. Assistant State Attorney Robin Arnold wrote in a memorandum that, “based on the facts and circumstances of the case, there is no specific evidence to rebut her claim that Terry Hall assaulted her and she acted in self-defense.” The woman, Tiffani Jennings, 25, changed her account of the events leading up to Hall’s death, Arnold wrote, but “every version is consistent in her claim of self-defense.”

Veteran Seattle radio host Dori Monson on Monday ripped embattled Seattle Mayor Ed Murray Monday for a spike in shootings, asserting that the infamous “gun violence tax” adopted in 2015 has only “made it tougher for law-abiding people who want to defend themselves against this growing problem.”
Like a gun control initiative pushed into law by an initiative in 2014 that was heavily financed by wealthy Seattle-area elitists, the gun tax hasn’t prevented gun-related crimes. Initiative 594, passed after proponents spent more than $10 million on a lopsided campaign, mandated so-called “universal background checks.” It hasn’t prevented the wrong people from getting gun because they simply ignore the law.

Progressives must shut down truth-tellers, particularly the conservative ones, because the opposing view proves how badly their policies and ideas really stink. “Shut down” is where I find myself after taking Professor (emeritus) George Kennedy to task over his ridiculous comparison of the National Rifle Association to the Islamic State.
