Japan: Japan’s chilling Internet suicide pacts
Submitted by: Charles S. McMillion

"The discovery Sunday of the bodies of four young Japanese men in a car at a vista point near Mount Fuji appears to be more evidence of a grim new trend in the prosperous country — group suicides of strangers who meet over the Internet. The suicide pacts, which have resulted in at least 18 deaths since February, are shocking to experts, even in a nation plagued by an astronomical suicide rate."

-------
Consider the fact that gun control advocates consistently fixate on firearm suicide as a national tragedy. Then consider the fact that Japan has practically no private firearm ownership, but an astronomical suicide rate. What does this do to the anti-gunners' feeble arguments?

"The terrorist attacks provoked in us not courage, but fear -- fear of being victimized again, as we were that day. We've reacted like the rape victim whose faith in human nature is crushed by anxiety and suspicion, rather than the one who fights back spiritually, refusing to be degraded by a degrading act." ...

"At least one statistical study now confirms a popular belief: Keeping a gun in your home greatly increases the likelihood that you'll die from a gunshot wound. A study in the June issue of the journal Annals of Internal Medicine."

"The study by the Violence Prevention Research Group at the University of California at Los Angeles appears in the June issue of the journal Annals of Internal Medicine."

-------
The mere name of the group makes its objectivity suspect. But as was pointed out numerous times, could these numbers point to the need for a firearm for self-defense in neighborhoods where the thugs are prevalent, armed and dangerous?

"Last week a decision was taken to disband Jamaica’s Crime Management Unit after an outcry over a shoot-out in which squad members killed four people last month. The unit was said to be responsible for dozens of deaths since it was established in 2000."

"It was claimed that the police were taking the opportunity 'take out' a number of criminals through 'extra judicial killings' and there is no doubt that the squad was one of the most feared in the country."

"Ronald Dixon, 27, flashed a broad grin yesterday after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct, a violation that will send him to Rikers Island for just three days, in a deal with Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The City Council in Laconia is urging Gov. Craig Benson to veto a bill that would prohibit communities from setting their own rules about whether to allow guns inside municipal buildings.

The council said the proposal removes its authority to protect city employees.

Supporters said the bill makes gun possession laws uniform throughout the state, not different from community to community.

Opponents, including the New Hampshire Municipal Association, said the proposal puts the lives of municipal employees at risk, by not letting them regulate guns in their buildings.

-------
They are still having problems comprehending the simple principle that law-abiding gun owners are not the problem and are not a threat.

Liberals Are Evil?

"Take a good, long; look at the leftist belief in gun control. Liberals swear with every breath that gun control is a compassionate ideal to espouse. They claim controlling and curtailing the legal ownership of guns by Americans makes us safer. It reduces crime, and makes society better according to their doctrine."

"Yet in reality gun control does nothing to reduce crimes or violence. In fact in States, which allow gun owners to carry their guns, violent crimes have dropped. Fewer rapes, robberies, assaults, murders, etc. And in England, where guns are strictly controlled and in most cases illegal to own, violent crime is increasing rather than decreasing."

"Now Liberals are well aware of these statistics, yet they continue to beat the drums for more gun control. Why? There is no doubt which course of action reduces crime and makes us safer is there? Yet Liberals continue to support and push the course which helps criminals instead of innocent citizens. Is this not evil? Yes my friends it is."

"Criticizing the Minnesota Legislature and welcoming a court fight, the Hennepin County Board voted to ban legally-permitted handguns from its 130 buildings."

"The action was in response to the new state law that would make it easier for Minnesotans to get permits to carry handguns in public. Since it was enacted, 758 people have applied for permits in Hennepin County -- the state's most populous county -- compared to a total of 509 permits issued for all of 2002."

"But gun popularity among women is based on two misconceptions. First, gun advocates often call guns the great equalizer between men and women. In reality, according to a new study by the University of California at Davis, women who own handguns are more than twice as likely to be murdered with a firearm by their partners than those who do not. While this may be partly explained by the fact that women who fear an attack are more apt to buy a gun, the study shows guns often fail to help women protect themselves."

"Guns were used in more than 1,000 murders and 3,000 robberies in the Umfolozi police area of Zululand in just 12 months, according to shocking crime statistics released on Monday."

"A ridiculous aspect of the current tax-cut debate in Washington is that huge tax cuts are 'irresponsible' and are earmarked for the rich. This truly isn't something new. The Democrats have been pushing this hogwash for years. That even includes many left wing observers, writers, and pundits who will use any excuse to justify the increases in spending, the borrowing, and the level of taxation in order to characterize the GOP as a threat to the welfare state and the federal programs which the government provides."

"The eternal conflict that comes out of the political struggle is natural. The reliance upon laws to arbitrate that friction versus legislating new law from the bench, was the original intent. The failure to abide by and adhere to that role has directly led to our present social discord and civic hostility. The Supreme Court was never chartered to supersede or replace Congress, and the Presidency was never meant to surpass both. But what has evolved is an interlocking union that insulates the functions of the federal government, whenever any branch decides that the supreme law of the land interferes with immediate political objectives."

"Many young men and women are surprised to learn that firearms kill more people between the ages of 15 and 24 than all natural causes combined."

-------
That wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that this is the prime age for gang activity, would it?

Additionally, according to the CDC, the above claim is a disingenuous manipulation. The primary cause of death in young people in that age group is listed as "unintentional injuries." Overwhelmingly, the majority of those injuries are motor-vehicle-related. Next come poisoning, drowning, other land transport and falls. Firearms are near the bottom causing 1.4 percent of unintentional injuries.

"And what 'broader preventive and reduction measures' did the Firearms Protocol come up with? It called for international control of 'manufacture, possession, and transfer' of commercial shipments of small arms, 'traders and forwarders to register and obtain licenses,' and 'marking and tracking mechanisms' for all weapons. Gee, sounds familiar. Just get legitimate dealers, manufacturers, and even owners to 'register,' and illegal weapons will magically disappear from the hands of criminals. (I'm sure those Palestinian machine shops turning out weapons will comply.) If you wade through the pompous verbiage, you sense the taint of an international Handgun Control, Inc. The words 'control,' and 'register' are, as Yogi Berra would say, déjà vu all over again."

"In an attempt to further their own agenda, while riding on the coattails of President Bush's popularity, congressional Democrats have introduced two bills that would eliminate a number of our remaining firearms freedoms, under the guise of being 'for the children.' "

"The bills are inappropriately named the Leave No Child Behind Act of 2003. The problem with this name is that President Bush signed into law an education bill known as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001." ...
