FULL TEXT BELOW:

(Author's note: David has recently taken me to task, not without reason, for being too long winded. Therefore, I have written the mini-essay below just for War on Guns.)

"Tell me," I was once asked, "What do you think about gun control? Give me the short answer." To which I replied, "If you try to take our firearms we will kill you."

The End

Constitution guarantees gun rights for people, not militia

"Niccolo Machiavelli, who was a sort of Karl Rove of his day, though with more integrity, said of the Swiss that they were 'the most free and most armed people' of Europe. Get it? The connection between arms and freedom?"

"That statement is still true of the Swiss. Many people know that they practice neutrality, but not many know that they practice armed neutrality. If the gun controllers' claim that the mere presence of arms leads to mayhem were true, the Swiss would have wiped themselves out years ago. There are guns and gun ranges all over the place. You would be hard-pressed to find a Swiss home without a firearm and ammunition. Yet, the Swiss have a very low crime rate." ...

... "In 1925, Robert F. Williams was born into the nasty era of Jim Crow ..."

"... Williams decided to do what past generations of patriotic Southerners had done — defend his soil against foreign aggressors, namely the Ku Klux Klan."

"As head of the local chapter of the NAACP, Williams (who was also a World War II veteran) organized a militia unit ... trained black men and women to use rifles, and fortified his entire neighborhood by stacking sandbags and stockpiling weapons. It worked." ...

"It's a safe bet that Williams understood the true meaning and importance of the Second Amendment more intimately than most contemporary conservatives ..." ...

"C.D. Chamberlain's attempt at antigun logic and presentation falls short, and, in the end, is only a reworking of the same old tired antigun rhetoric. It is more than a stretch to compare alcohol addiction and lead paint toys from China to the Second Amendment and lead bullets, and then throw in statistics from the Center for Disease Control which are inappropriate because they include adults ages 18 and 19, and teenage criminals."

"In fact, all children to age 14 are five times more likely to die from motor vehicle accidents than from firearms, and more than twice as likely to die from drowning, according to the CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (2005)." ...

"Josh Horwitz, of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, is once again arguing that the people of the United States have no right to resist tyranny ...--this time, oddly enough, using Mexico to illustrate his 'point.'" ...

"Unfortunately for Josh, the argument he never tires of knocking down is a straw man, and is not, as far as I am aware, made by any gun rights advocates. No one, to my knowledge, claims that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to revolt against the government. ..."

"The Second Amendment exists not to safeguard the right to revolt against the Constitutional government, but to protect the people's means to resist a government that refuses to be bound by the Constitution. ..." ...

"In East Africa you hear hunters talk of four-five-eights and the three-seven-fives. They're mighty cartridges, for game that can trample you or pick you up in its mouth. 'But you shoot too seldom when every pull of the trigger costs you a couple of bucks,' concedes one PH. His .416 solids have the dull patina of old oak where loop leather hasn’t turned them green. 'When I practice, it's with the two-two.'"

"The .22 rimfire had an unlikely start. In 1849 inventor Walter Hunt earned a patent for his breechloading Volition Repeater. But he lacked money to develop it. Fellow New Yorker George Arrowsmith chipped in cash and business savvy, hiring skilled gun mechanic Lewis Jennings to troubleshoot the rifle. ..." ...

"It's about time we get real about gun control in our cities. If we can have sobriety checkpoints and now motorcycle checkpoints, why don't we have cops creating gun checkpoints? Have them create checkpoints in the city where the gun violence is running rampant."

"Give the cops metal detectors and make people stop and get checked for guns. They are illegal and they are a lot worse than drunken drivers, and motorcyclists without the correct credentials. Let's get real here and start doing something about all these guns on our streets."

"If it's legal to stop people driving a car down the street to see if they are drunk, why isn't it legal to stop people walking down the street to see if they have a gun? ..." ...

"TODAY I would like to take umbrage with an issue that has perplexed me for some time."

"The so called 'right to bear arms'. The Second Amendment. The untouchable written clause in the American way that gives anyone - from a yeehaa Texan President to a yahoo Detroit drug dealer - the God-given right to wield a weapon capable of causing death."

"How? Why? I don't get it. This is not something level-headed and even sane people should do. Unless you're a farmer with a need to shoot vermin, perhaps."

"For anyone who doesn't know, America is governed by a written constitution. A series of amendments cast in stone - like the Commandments handed to Moses." ...

"Georgia, Florida and Texas are the top suppliers of crime guns to other states, according to crime gun trace data recently released by the federal ... (ATF) and analyzed by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence."

"Illegal guns generally flow from states with weak gun laws to states with stronger gun laws. In states with strong gun laws, criminals find it more difficult to obtain guns from local sources and frequently must obtain guns from traffickers supplied by out-of-state gun dealers. This fuels the 'iron pipeline' described in past Federal law enforcement reports." ...

KABA Note: What the Brady Bunch fails to mention is that the ATF itself states that crime gun trace data are not reliable indicators of unlawful gun use.

"Before classes adjourned for the academic year, students at the University of Pittsburgh squared off over whether guns should be legally carried on campus."

"Although the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus have yet to convince lawmakers to allow them to pack .45s alongside their copies of Roget's Thesaurus, I hear the pro-gunplay group plans a major offensive aimed -- pardon the pun -- at overturning the campus anti-gun policy."

"With that in mind, we'd like to imagine a day in the life of Pitt's SCCOC leader David Brytus if he succeeds." ...

"Why does it seem that legislation is always going after those who are law-abiding when firearms are concerned? In my opinion, Mayor Greg Nickels' ban on concealed-carry permits at festivals is nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction to avoid a lawsuit ['Nickels said to plan festival weapons ban,' Local News, June 7]."

"If he is going to do a ban just on festivals, that is a waste of perfectly good, shortsighted legislation. Why not go for a ban at all types of events?"

"Because these events have just as much likelihood of having a shooting as a festival does, right? Oh, wait, that would be dangerously close to violating the Second Amendment and the purpose of having a concealed-carry permit (CCP) in the first place." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Closing arguments are expected to start Monday morning in the trial of a former central Illinois police officer charged in four rapes.

Attorney Michael Rosenblat has wrapped up his defense of former Bloomington police officer Jeff Pelo (PEE'-loh).

Rosenblat only called a handful of witnesses, while prosecutors called more than 60 people to the stand.

Also Wednesday, Judge Robert Freitag (FRY'-tag) dismissed two aggravated criminal sexual assault charges against Pelo. The judge says prosecutors didn't present sufficient evidence to back up those counts.

Pelo still faces 33 charges and has pleaded not guilty to all of them.

Original Title: Facing $43M deficit, MARTA is cutting jobs

... "Meeting at MARTA headquarters at Lindbergh Station, the board also heard a presentation from MARTA police on how they intend to deal with the new law allowing licensed gun owners to carry their firearms on MARTA. One concern was the MARTA station at Hartsfield-Jackson airport."

"MARTA police plan to ask passengers with visible guns to conceal them. They will ask the public not to approach fellow passengers with guns, but to contact MARTA police." ...
-------

Submitter's comment: MARTA is preempted from regulating firearms per OCGA 16-11-173. Additionally, there should be no issue with the "MARTA station at Hartsfield-Jackson airport" so long as nobody attempts to carry past the metal detectors into the sterile areas of the airport.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by one enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. — JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1821)
