... "I won't go here into why I think this study is crap, aside from the fact that Wintemute is one of the more notorious agenda-driven anti-defense propagandists out there. Going to gun shows is hardly equivalent to doing 'shoe-leather epidemiology' in South Central or East LA amongst these guys. And I'll only note in passing what a disappointment I find this PhysOrg.com site to be--is this what purported scientific "news" has been reduced to: blatant rah-rah press releases for anti-defense fanatics?"

"What stands out most for me was this character snooping in on private transactions without the knowledge of the people involved--and many gun shows I've seen have a 'No Cameras/Recording Devices' policy. ..." ...

"As law-abiding Americans, one of our basic civil liberties is the right to self-protection and self-preservation."

"The ... (NRA) has led efforts to preserve this right for generations. In 2005, we embarked on a concerted effort to strengthen self-defense laws ... Recently, Gov. Phil Bredesen signed 'castle doctrine' legislation (HB1907) into law, making Tennessee one of 17 states across the country to have adopted this measure."

"Most Americans believe that self-defense is protected under the law. However, until recently, most Americans would be mistaken. NRA reviewed state statutes and case law history across the country and we were astonished to find that many laws favored the criminal and burdened the victim." ...

"The Second Amendment guarantees the right of an individual to own guns and for that reason should be repealed, according to a legal affairs analyst who opposes gun ownership."

"'The Second Amendment is one of the clearest statements of right in the Constitution,' Benjamin Wittes, a guest scholar at the center-left Brookings Institution, acknowledged in a discussion Monday. 'We've had decades of sort of intellectual gymnastics to try to make those words not mean what they say.'"

"Wittes, who said he has 'no particular enthusiasm for the idea of a gun culture,' said that rather than try to limit gun ownership through regulation that potentially violates the Second Amendment, opponents of gun ownership should set their sights on repealing the amendment altogether." ...

"The top headline in the news during my visit to Canada last month was a school shooting ... The shooting took place at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute, located in the citys rough Jane and Finch neighborhood. It resulted in the death of a 15-year-old boy named Jordan Manners." ...

"Although Canada is not immune from homicides or even school shootings, given Manners' tender age and the fact it took place on school grounds, the tragedy has understandably struck a raw nerve with Canadians. When tragedies such as this have a deep impact on the public psyche it is inevitable that politicians will try to get involved and put forward sweeping solutions with the hope that such a tragedy will never occur again. ..." ...

Unregulated 'Gun Shows' What Happens In Nevada Does Not Stay In Nevada!

"California regulates gun sales between private parties that take place at 'gun shows'. [KABA Note: They also regulate private sales that take place outside gun shows] Neighboring Nevada does not. Now a recent academic study indicates that unregulated private transactions at Nevada gun shows are behind an apparent pipeline of guns used in crimes in California." ...

"70% of the dealers at the Nevada gun shows lacked Federal Firearms licenses." ...

[KABA Note: Then they were selling books, knives or clothing as federal law requires anyone 'engaging in the business' of selling firearms to have a FFL]

"At least two dozen 'straw' purchases firearms bought by one person but intended for another 'prohibited' purchaser were observed." ...
-------

KABA Note: Which makes the fact that they were private sales immaterial: straw purchases are when someone who can pass a NICS check buys a weapon for someone who can't.

"Woycheshin says the pursuit continued down back roads in the area until the two suspects in the car came to a dead end, abandoned their vehicle, and fled on foot. Woycheshin says he remained on the phone with 911 to let them know his location."

"'It dead ended into a field and he waited until police got there,' [Madison County Sheriff] Douget said. 'His stepson then went back to Highway 90 and observed them coming out of the woods, and at the point had a weapon with him and held them at gunpoint until the police officers got there.'" "Joking and calling customers by name, the Hutto family on Monday continued to do what they've done for generations: run a grocery store."

"Seven cars and a bicycle crammed into the small lot of Neighborhood Discount Supermarket on the corner of Ford and Market streets in Fort Myers."

"No blood was visible on the linoleum floor in front of the counter on Monday, a day after Damione G. Massey, 16, died face down in that spot. Fort Myers police say he and his half-brother tried to rob David Hutto, 38, at gunpoint."

"Police say that Hutto's shooting of the teens was justifiable self-defense because one of them shot at him first during the bungled robbery Sunday." ...

It really concerns me when weve got Republicans that are being considered for the presidency and touted as frontrunners that dont even understand that the second amendment is not about hunting. And when theyre asked, they say, oh Im a hunter. Well, Im a hunter. I have a concealed carry permit. Thats not what the Second Amendment is about."

"Because I have a past in law enforcement, I am very much in favor of the Second Amendment, and usually have a hand in much of this legislation."

"This year, I sponsored ... the Castle Doctrine.' We did pass a version of this, expanding the circumstances under which the use of force is presumed justified. I felt this measure was vitally important; our citizens should be able to defend themselves."

"A proposal to ban the discharge of firearms in all of Marion County was shot down Monday night in the City-County Council in front of a crowd of jubilant gun-rights supporters."

"The council voted 16-8 against the proposal, which would have extended a 1975 ordinance prohibiting the discharge of a gun within the old city limits, except in self-defense. The bipartisan defeat was expected, especially after the committee that heard the proposal moved it to the full council but recommended against its passage."

"Opponents said the measure unfairly restricted the constitutional right to bear arms because it placed limits on shooting even in safe situations on private property." ...

"Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy is among those pushing for the state law, which would exempt law enforcement agencies and officers purchasing handguns for official use. Certain gun collectors also would be exempted." ...

"After Saturday's fatal car-to-car shooting in the same troubled area of north Toronto that has also seen a deadly school shooting and three teens killed during a high-speed chase with police in the past three weeks, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty called on Ottawa to ban handguns. We recognize that Mr. McGuinty and his government are up for re-election this October, so the Premier must appear to be doing something about crime in Canada's largest city. But why is it the first instinct of most liberal-left politicians to go after the property of law-abiding citizens when the problem is so obviously the actions of criminals? Confiscating the former will have no impact on the latter." ...
