Chris Cox: When it came to support for the Second Amendment, President Ronald Reagan demonstrated the difference between mere words and resolute action (NRA)

"...Clinton and Kerry have both donned hunting garb to project their false Second Amendment credentials, but Ronald Reagan knew the difference between words and action."

"In fact, President Reagan, the owner of an AR-15, was a strong and consistent supporter of the Second Amendment and the NRA. He was a long time member, joining NRA in December of 1972 and upgrading to Life Member in August of 1979. He actively courted the NRA's endorsement in both of his presidential campaigns, and was the first presidential candidate in history to receive that endorsement. He appeared on the cover of NRA magazines four times. In 1983 he was offered, and accepted, an NRA Honorary Life Membership, the highest honor bestowed by the NRA."

Gun safety is beyond debate

"Each time a tragedy involving a gun is publicized, we hear a barrage from one side of the political fence demanding more gun control, and an equally thunderous volley from the other side with something along the lines of 'guns don't kill people, people kill people'. We spend a lot of time arguing about how many bullets a gun should shoot, how long the barrel should be, and how fast it should fire."

"One of the things that seems to get overlooked is the fact that there are millions of firearms already in the possession of millions of Americans, and that most of those firearms are legal to today's standards. What can we do to prevent the accidents and even some of the crimes we hear about?"

After 9-11, Gun Control Loses Firepower

"Gun control is not an issue in this year's national election, partly because even Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry has mouthed support, sort of, for the Second Amendment."

"An extension on the so-called assault-weapons ban was defeated in the Senate in March, to little public outcry. It went down in large part because the ban had not been shown to reduce crime, as advocates had predicted it would."

"Sure, every once in a while one hears of a small gun-control victory, or near-victory, in some state legislature, but while gun control was all the rage only a few years ago, now it's sort of on a par with Madonna: Every once in a while she pops up in the news, and you think, 'Gee, is she still out there?' "Pizza Hut shouldn’t make deliveries, and profits, if it cannot ensure the safety of its delivery personnel, or at least allow deliverypersons to protect themselves. Why do corporate executives and government bureaucrats continue to refuse people their natural, constitutional right to protect themselves? Are insurance costs more important than the lives of citizens and employees? How much did the airlines save? Perhaps when a criminal murders a Pizza Hut deliveryperson, the surviving family members should consider the handling by Pizza Hut of the Honeycutt incident, and consult a lawyer!"

"The Supreme Court agreed Monday to consider how far police can go in searching homes and questioning occupants without violating their constitutional rights."

"Justices will review the case of two Simi Valley, Calif., officers ordered to pay $60,000 to a young woman for their actions in a 1998 search of her family's house."

"The woman, Iris Mena, awoke at dawn to find an officer in a ski mask pointing a submachine gun at her head. SWAT team members led the woman through rain to a cold garage, where she was kept in handcuffs and questioned for up to three hours while the home was searched."

"A jury determined that her right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures was violated..."

"It is precisely during times of relative crisis that we should adhere most closely to the Constitution, not abandon it. War does not justify the suspension of torture laws any more than it justifies the suspension of murder laws, the suspension of due process, or the suspension of the Second amendment."

"...If the president claims extraordinary wartime powers, and we fight undeclared wars with no beginning and no end, when if ever will those extraordinary powers lapse? Since terrorism will never be eliminated completely, should all future presidents be able to act without regard to Congress or the Constitution simply by asserting 'We’re at war?' "

"It was time to 'shoot the bastards' four decades ago but no one saw the handwriting on the wall. Now the wall is encircling us and everything we should like to see done to restore America. That will take a third revolution, because the second succeeded in taking our liberties and twisting our values, our mindsets and abolishing our cultural heritage. It was right out in plain sight, and no one saw. Now the internet writers are corresponding with each other while major media, a mind-control system straight from Stalin's old Pravda, keeps spewing the doctrine of the new order in politically correct language and with slanted stories that the majority of Americans believe."

"After winning independence, and the sovereignty of the individual, our forefathers took on the job of writing a document that would not only unite the 13 Republics (to be known as States) then in existence, but also assure against further oppression by any level of government. In other words, a document had to be created that would control and limit the authority of governments thereby securing our unalienable rights."

"Carl Mostoller says that he isn't a craftsman, woodworker or artist. He said he just enjoys making his own rifles."

"It was a talent that he kept mostly to himself. That is, until the Somerset Borough Bicentennial Committee got wind of his work."

" 'They contacted me sometime around Christmas and asked me if I would want to make a 'Bicentennial rifle,' he said. 'I really didn't know what to say, but I told (Tim Resh) that I would.' "

"Resh is a member of the committee and is also a friend of Mostoller."

" 'When I asked him what he wanted it to look like, he just said that they wanted a nice-looking rifle with the word 'bicentennial' on it somewhere,' he said. 'I think that that was the most difficult - looking at a blank slate.' " ...

"The 29-year-old woman told police she had left her campsite about 23km along the Old South Rd during the Finke Desert Race after seeing a vehicle on fire near a neighbouring camp."

"As the woman went to investigate, she saw a man in the darkness at the campsite raise a rifle and point it at her."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Some of the worst abuses of government force in recent years were precipitated by technical and victimless gun-law violations. For example, the BATF claimed that the Branch Davidians possessed machine guns without paying the required federal tax and filling in the proper registration forms. So a tax case worth less than $10,000 led to a 76-man helicopter, machine gun, and grenade assault on a home in which 2/3 of the occupants were women and children. — Dave Kopel and Dr. Michael S.
