"The Cloquet Police Department is giving up an old war horse in favor of 'putting the most effective tools possible in the hands of our officers,' said Chief Wade Lamirande at Tuesday night’s meeting of the city council."

"The council voted unanimously to allow the police department to sell an old Thompson submachine gun that has been in its arsenal for the past 71 years and use the proceeds to purchase new weapons systems for each of its squad cars." ...

"Laine and Lamirande explained to council members that with the proceeds from the sale, the department was requesting the go ahead to purchase five M4 Law Enforcement Carbines, one for each of its squad cars and one for its detective. Laine said the M4 is the same as those used by the United States Military and added that it has proven very effective in law enforcement work as well." ...
-------

But according to the antis, "there is no legitimate reason to have an assault weapon other than to kill as many people as possible in a very short period of time" so why would cops need them?

UK: To protect and serve themselves

"When they heard that shots had been fired at a barbecue at a house in Highmoor Cross, near Henley in Oxfordshire, a police team of fit, young men arrived with helmets, bullet-proof vests and Hekler and Koch submachine-guns. They had all had special training for dealing with dangerous situations. They had a mobile incident centre and full back-up."

"Georgina Gibson lives in the house next door to where the shots were fired. She is a woman of 58 with no training about what to do when faced with guns and no experience of violence. She had nothing except her wits with which to protect herself."

"Yet while Mrs Gibson ran straight into her neighbour's house the moment she heard the gunshots, desperate to do anything she could to help the victims, the armed policemen hesitated for a full hour before they crossed the threshold of the house in which Victoria Horgan lay bleeding to death." ...
-------

So not only are the Brits prohibited from defending themselves (with guns or swords or even knitting needles) but armed and armored cops won't protect them either!

"In a direct challenge to federal limits on political advocacy, the National Rifle Association plans to begin broadcasting a daily radio program on Thursday to provide news and pro-gun commentary to 400,000 listeners." ...

"The N.R.A. says its three-hour program constitutes news and commentary, not advertising. As a result, when other advocacy groups are required to stop running political commercials, 'NRANews' intends to continue broadcasting its reporting and commentary against politicians who favor gun control to Nov. 2." ...

More proof that McCain-Feingold is a worthless attempt at incumbent protection that has no hope of cleaning up elections, but rather just violates our constitutional rights for no good reason.

UK: A man fired a harpoon gun into a 15-year-old boy's face as he was attacked with a baseball bat by a gang and is being charged with intentional infliction of Gross Bodily Harm

"Nathan Kirk, 25, fired the harpoon after being stabbed just short of his heart, Reading Crown Court heard."

"The youth's injury was so serious that he lost an eye and paramedics had to use bolt-cutters to remove the three-pronged harpoon from his face." ...

"[After a confrontation, Prosecutor] Baughan said, the teenager returned with two men and attacked Mr Kirk, who was dressed only in boxer shorts, punching, kicking and stabbing him."

"But Mr Kirk, who is alleged to have left the harpoon gun by the front door, fired it in the face of the teenager, he said."

"Mr Baughan told the court it was 'little short of a miracle' that the teenager survived and added: 'Although he was injured, Kirk reacted violently and deliberately.'"
-------

So while you are being stabbed, kicked and beaten with baseball bats you are not allowed to react "violently and deliberately" in the UK.

The inmates are running the asylum.

"What a revelation to learn that the Justice Department lawyer who wrote the infamous memo in effect defending torture is now a U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals judge. It tells you all you need to know about the sort of conservative to whom George W. Bush is turning in his attempt to pack the federal courts."

"Conservatives once were identified with protecting the rights of the individual against the unbridled power of government, but this is not your grandfather's conservatism. The current brand running things in D.C. holds that the commander in chief is above all law and that the ends always justify the means. This has paved the way for the increasingly well-documented and systematic use of torture in an ad hoc gulag archipelago for those detained anywhere in the world under the overly broad rubric of the 'war on terror.'" ...

"WEAPONS that can incapacitate crowds of people by sweeping a lightning-like beam of electricity across them are being readied for sale to military and police forces in the US and Europe."

"At present, commercial stun guns target one person at a time, and work only at close quarters. The new breed of non-lethal weapons can be used on many people at once and operate over far greater distances."

"But human rights groups are appalled by the fact that no independent safety tests have been carried out, and by their potential for indiscriminate use." ...

"Two of the former Riverside police officers who fatally shot Tyisha Miller agreed Tuesday to end legal action against her family, but continue to fight the City of Riverside in federal court."

"Former officers Daniel Hotard and Paul Bugar had sued Miller's estate for assault and battery. They claimed the 19-year-old Rubidoux woman's actions had caused them emotional distress, attorneys for the Miller family said."

"Attorneys would have been prepared to try the case in front of a jury, but everyone was happy to have it behind them, said Brian Dunn, a Miller family attorney. The 'mutual release' agreement did not involve any exchange of funds."

"With the benefit of more than two years of hindsight since September 11, 2001, many security experts, law enforcement representatives, government officials, Members of Congress and community leaders have concluded that a number of the government’s post-9/11 initiatives have not only failed to make us safer from future attacks, but may have undermined our security while eroding fundamental civil liberties. The policies in question disserve the nation’s twin goals of freedom and security by weakening public trust in the government, undermining legal safeguards that ensure fairness and due process, engendering a climate of fear and suspicion, and damaging our relations with other nations with whom we must make common cause." "A gun dealer should not face a misdemeanor charge for selling a firearm to an undercover law enforcement officer who indicated it was for an underage person who didn't have a license, the Michigan Supreme Court said in a decision released Wednesday." ...

"The Supreme Court pointed out that the dealer told the undercover deputies that he couldn't sell a gun to an 18-year-old without a license. The dealer also refused to accept payment for a firearm from Little, insisting that it come from one of the undercover deputies although they had indicated it was for Little."

"The Supreme Court said there is no dispute that Epps bought the gun because he had a gun license, selected it and handed Laney the money to pay for it."

"'Because (the dealer) complied with the plain and unambiguous language of the stature, he committed no crime,' the Supreme Court said."

"The Daily News bought one yesterday on Mott St. for $150."

"It was a modestly sharp sword with a dragon design and 2-foot blade that sliced through a watermelon like butter."

"Other samurai swords - not unlike the one police say 18-year-old Michael Desiderio used to hack another teen to death - are available for as little as $50."

"Gun shops in Bangkok are offering discounts to teachers in Thailand's troubled Muslim south where a spate of almost daily attacks show no signs of abating despite government promises to restore peace."

"On Wednesday, a school guard was shot on his way to work and a Buddhist policeman was killed at a government office, police said. More than 200 people have been killed in the violence that erupted in January."

"Schools have been common targets for arson and gun attacks, leading to teachers being given permission to apply for licences for firearms for self-defence."

"Several Bangkok gunsmiths have appointed teachers as salespeople to lure potential customers to the capital with promises of discounts, said Pairat Vihakarat, who heads a teachers union with 20,000 members in five southern provinces."

"Lucy thought the restraining order would protect her. Since Evan’s murder, Lucy has learned a lot about both restraining orders and guns."

"Gary Henderson's residence near Carnes was the first house that a gang of burglars hit in May."

"Five other homes in the Pistol Ridge, Maxie and Carnes communities quickly followed."

"Now the communities are fighting back as they work to organize a Neighborhood Watch group armed with backing from Forrest County, which is offering up to $2,500 through Crime Stoppers for information that catches and convicts the burglars."

"'We don't leave our doors unlocked any more in south Forrest County and stuff I had outside is now under lock and key,' Henderson said Tuesday." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people. — Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788.
