... "Two men and one woman broke into the apartment of a 20-year-old college student at 5:48 a.m. One invader was armed with a pellet gun, and the three overpowered the resident and tied him up. As the intruders began to ransack the apartment, the student was able to free himself and get hold of his handgun. He fired three shots, hitting one of the burglars in the chest, and then ran from the apartment and called for help. Police discovered the body of one suspect, identified as Juan Herrera, on the stairs leading to the apartment. The other two suspects had not been apprehended. "We're about to get the big show started again. The big conventions where the Democrats and Republicans will officially name their Presidential and VP candidates so that the competition can begin in earnest."

"The "big games" of this political World Series are the so-called debates between the candidates. These televised debates can make or break a campaign."

"The problem with these "debates" is that they are all form and no substance. Bush and Kerry will give nearly the same replies to the softball questions in a mutually agreed-upon setting that is designed to keep anything really interesting from being said or done."

"The shows will be judged on which candidate sounds and looks best while stating a position more-or-less the same as his opponent's... Which is to say, the middle-of-the-road, poll-guided, trying not to piss anyone off, candy-assed sellout position." ...

"I've decided the Patriot Act is not an assault on our civil liberties, but rather one big practical joke. Any day now, the feds will kick down our doors in the middle of the night. They'll drag us from our beds, tear off our pajamas, and frisk us in the name of freedom. And just when they've gagged us -- just when we're ready to cry -- that new age Allen Funt, Ashton Kutcher, will come walking out with his hat on backwards, screaming, 'You got Punk'd!'"

"The Libertarian Party says it presidential nominee 'could attract enough votes from angry conservatives to cost President Bush his job.'"

"The nominee is 49-year-old Michael Badnarik, a computer programmer from Austin, Texas, who has worked on defense projects."

"Badnarik won the presidential nomination with 54 percent of the vote at the Libertarian Party's national convention in Atlanta over the holiday weekend." ...

"Badnarik, in his acceptance speech, said he would keep his campaign focused on the Constitution and forcing the government to abide by it."

As long as Bush continues his "all talk, no walk" Second Amendment stance, he'll lose gun rights activists.

... "I cannot stress enough the importance of accountability. State leaders need to know that theirs is a borrowed authority, and that the members always retain the right to end the loan. It is also important to move power away from the state leadership. You can compare leadership as a flame, power as oxygen - the more oxygen you have, the more the flame consumes. Reduce the oxygen, and you control the flame." ...

"The afternoon of the day I was attacked, I drove into the nearest town and bought a gun. In the report I had already filed with the police, I described the stranger who broke into the house while I was taking a shower. 'Go away,' I screamed. He told me to shut up."

"After a kicking, howling struggle, which took us from the bedroom to the living room, he ran off. He was gone, but I felt panicky and powerless. I had seen into the heart of reality and been permanently changed. What kind of fool would be nonviolent in a violent world? I laughed at my old liberalism, my empty prating about the evils of violence and the value of human life. The man who attacked me didn't have those scruples, and I had lost mine in a heartbeat. If I hadn't fought back violently, I believe I would have been raped, and I might have been killed."

"Imagine all the firepower of an assault weapon pointed in your direction."

"Assault weapons built to rake bullets across battlefields are spraying bullets in Bay Area neighborhoods. It is a war. Police say street gangs bring out the fearsome weapons to scare off the competition in the drug trade."

"'It's a desire to arm themselves with the biggest, baddest weapons available to them, to either take on their adversaries or the police,' said Sgt. Gil Tournour of the Oakland Police Department."

"The gangs pay anywhere from $400 to a $1000 on the street for an assault weapon like a copy of an AK 47. The bullets, a common 30-caliber round, can be bought legally in gun shops. Semi-automatic assault weapons are banned in California. Fully automatic weapons are outlawed across the country. Coming across a criminal with an assault weapon is a police officer's greatest fear." ...

"She wasted no time, snatched the gun from its holster and shot a big fat rattlesnake. Klatterina hates snakes. Klambone hates the sound of gunfire. He let out a dog-screech and took off. The wounded snake went into a fit of thrashing about. Klatterina dropped the dog’s leash she’d been carrying in one hand, gripped the H & K with both mitts and emptied the clip. She hit the viper five times. Then she found a sizeable rock and smashed its head." ...

"When Klueless and Kolhsore and Klambone (who had galloped back to the safety of the fishers) viewed the remains, they were impressed." ...

"Klueless stretched the body out and measured. 'Aw gee, Klatterina, this is a nice fat one. I could have made something out of the skin, but Honey, you’ve put so many holes in it, you’ve spoiled the hide!'"

"Stephen Harper announced today that the Conservative party would tighten child pornography laws to eliminate the so-called 'public good' defense and end statutory release for criminals who serve two-thirds of their sentence. The public good defense argues that some pornographic material that would otherwise be banned should be allowed because it has artistic merit. Harper announced the platform saying, 'If you do the crime, you do the time.'"

"Harper also said that the Conservatives would scrap the federal gun registry and use the $25 to $100 million saved a year to fight crime by creating a national sex-offender registry and hiring 200 more RCMP officers."

... "This is a formal complaint against these officers, (one being a county unit). Please do what needs to be done to make corrective actions that will insure your officers stay within their legal authority. Violating anyone’s civil rights without cause is most certainly going to leave a bad taste in citizens’ mouths. When the vast majority of the public is law-abiding citizens, the assumption of guilt is unwarranted. I would hope that other citizens operating inside the law would not have been treated so poorly as on this day." ...

"Typically Ellensburg is windy. Since it wasn’t today, the wife decided it would be nice to take a walk. She would be flying across the nation the next day, so a stop at the bank would be necessary to get cash out for the trip."

"I decided that since it is legal to bear arms in self-defense, today would be a good day to exercise this right. The manner in which I carry was determined by RCW 9.41.050, in which it declares I am a criminal if I choose to conceal my handgun. Without concealment, a number of options for carrying my gun are unavailable. Left with only the option of open carrying, I have decided on a manner that is as close to concealed as legally allowed. I have attached a clip to my firearm so the gun stays inside of my waistband, yet the clip insures the handle remains visible. I carry the gun up front, where I have quicker access and it is less likely to be taken away, (a Chelan officer was killed recently after having his gun taken from him.)" ...

"A teenager reaching for a silver semi-automatic in his pants stood stock-still at the back of an MBTA bus. 'We heard a group of kids come running off screaming, 'He's got a gun!' ' Leary, an MBTA police detective, recalled recently."

"What no one knew - least of all the little girl left on board paralyzed with fear - was that the pistol was a toy, lethal only in its ability to get its owner killed."

"Sidling down the outside of the bus toward the teen, Leary drew his very real revolver, his forefinger tickling the trigger."

"'I reached right through the window and said, 'Don't touch the gun,' ' Leary said. 'He asked me afterwards, 'Would you have shot me?' I said, 'Absolutely.' '"

"Chad Baus with Ohioans for Concealed Carry (OFCC), and grassroots gun rights activist Bruce Beatty both report cases where it appears local gun policies are colliding with the new state statute."

"Almost 2,000 Central Minnesotans have gotten permits to carry weapons in the past year."

"And overall, the sheriffs who have handed them out said the permits turned out to be not as big a deal as some people thought they might be."

"'It's really gone very smoothly,' Sherburne County Chief Deputy Scott Gudmundson said."

"A state law took effect a year ago today that makes it easier to get a permit to carry a weapon. The law changed to require sheriffs to approve permits for adults who aren't disqualified for criminal, mental-health or safety reasons. Previously, sheriffs had broad discretion to deny permits."
