The Senate Parliamentarian has deleted popular NFA reforms from the pending Republican-backed reconciliation bill.
Section 70436, “Elimination of Tax on Certain Devices Under the National Firearms Act,” was deleted from H.R. 1, better known as the "One Big, Beautiful Bill," according to a statement issued early Friday by the Senate Budget Committee's ranking Democrat, Sen. Jeff Merkley.
Senate Dems had pressured the chamber's non-partisan Parliamentarian to remove the gun reform language as part of the "Byrd Bath" under the Congressional Budget Act, which bars non-budgetary provisions from reconciliation legislation, bills that can be passed with a simple majority vote. |

State lawmakers sent a bill to Gov. Josh Stein on Thursday that would allow private schools to authorize teachers or school volunteers to carry concealed handguns on campus. Under House Bill 193, employees or volunteers at private schools would be allowed to carry firearms or stun guns on school grounds if they receive written permission from the school’s board of trustees or administrative director, have a concealed handgun permit, and complete an approved training course.

We reported last month how the National Rifle Association (NRA) had petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to take up a challenge to Florida’s restrictive law banning the sale of rifles and shotguns to lawful 18-, 19-, and 20-year-old adults.
Now, several other pro-gun rights groups are urging the Supreme Court to take up the case, NRA v. Glass, in the hope that the high court will strike down the ban.
Lawmakers passed the law restricting long gun sales to adults under age 21 after the horrible mass murder at a Parkland, Florida, high school back in 2018. The NRA filed a lawsuit in 2021 challenging the measure, and four years later, the case could finally be determined by the Supreme Court. |

Tucked into the more than 1,000 pages of the GOP domestic policy bill winding its way through Congress is a provision that would water down a nearly century-old firearms law — changes that the gun industry has sought for years but that gun-control advocates warn would come at the expense of public safety.
The legislation would ease restrictions established by the 1934 National Firearms Act (NFA) on suppressors — often called silencers — and certain long guns such as short-barreled rifles and sawed-off shotguns. The change would eliminate the $200 federal tax on suppressors and the requirement that owners register them with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. |

A Democratic push to codify a state Capitol gun ban and bar the sale of both bump stocks and untraceable firearms, known as ghost guns, will go nowhere in the Michigan House, according to its top Republican leader.
“Those are dead on arrival,” House Speaker Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, told reporters after the gun reform measures passed the state Senate on Wednesday.
Hall’s comments fell in line with remarks from Senate Republicans, who had decried the packages as efforts to further curb Second Amendment rights in Michigan while punishing law-abiding gun owners. |

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) sent a letter to Attorney General of the United States Pamela Bondi recently, expressing in no uncertain terms what those in the gun world think of the proposed ATF-DEA merger – hard pass. The letter lists 12 reasons why the ATF-DEA merger presents a clear and present danger to millions of American gun owners.
The SAF response lays out in great detail the merger would create tremendous budget and employee increases for the ATF, including greater access to high-level surveillance and intelligence apparatuses. |

A homeowner in McKean County killed a black bear in what is being labeled as a self-defense shooting of the animal that would not leave their yard.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission was called on June 4 to a home in a residential area along Olean Road in Foster Township about a bear being on the property.
State Game Warden Justin Slomian reports the homeowners called and said they scared a bear off their lawn that evening.
“It was in their yard and on their back porch; they scared it off when they went to go outside,” he said in a telephone interview. The couple reported the nuisance bear as it was the first one they encountered on their property. |

The Pennsylvania Superior Court has struck down a law requiring a permit to openly carry a gun on the street, dealing a blow to the city’s efforts to regulate guns more strictly than the rest of the state.
The ruling stems from the case of Riyaadh Sumpter, a West Philadelphia man arrested in 2022 after police saw a gun in his waistband. He did not have a permit and was sentenced to 12 months of probation for a firearms violation.
Pennsylvania is an open-carry state, but the law makes an exception for “Cities of the First Class,” Philadelphia being the only one of those. In the state, you need a permit to carry.
Sumpter’s public defender, Leonard Sosnov, argued the Philadelphia exception is unconstitutional. |

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms has joined with five other organizations, including the Second Amendment Foundation, in a letter to Attorney General Pamela Bondi, urging her to abandon a proposal to merge the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
In the letter, signed by CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, the groups urge Bondi “to consider abandoning this proposal and continue to operate ATF as a standalone agency of narrow purpose and limited resource, until such time as all unconstitutional federal gun laws are repealed and the ATF can be abolished.” |

President Trump’s Department of Justice threw its weight into the fight to overturn the Protect Illinois Communities Act, a broad and draconian anti-gun measure that is a de facto ban on nearly all modern semi-auto rifles in the Land of Lincoln State.
This month, the DOJ filed a “friend-of-the-court” brief supporting the Firearms Policy Coalition’s lawsuit challenging Illinois' PICA law, which broadly targets so-called “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” magazines. |

For the past four years, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has served as a firewall against the radical Left’s relentless assault on the Second Amendment — vetoing a whopping 54 gun control bills aimed at dismantling the rights of law-abiding Virginians.
His unwavering commitment to the Constitution sets a national standard for protecting gun rights — but more importantly, it highlights just how aggressively the radical Left is pressing in. With the governor’s race on the horizon, Virginians need to understand the policies Democrat legislators are eyeing and realize just how different the Commonwealth would look if Youngkin hadn’t stood his ground. |

The first amendment, sponsored by Representatives Brian Mast (R-FL) and Dave Joyce (R-OH)—both co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Cannabis Caucus—targets the long-standing policy that prohibits VA doctors from recommending medical marijuana, even in states where it’s legal. The amendment prevents the VA from using funds to enforce Veterans Health Directive 1315, which effectively bars VA healthcare providers from completing paperwork or issuing recommendations that would allow veterans to participate in state-approved cannabis programs.

In a big win for Golden State gun owners, a three-judge panel of the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on June 20 struck down the California law limiting firearm purchases to just one every 30 days.
In the ruling in the case Nguyen v. Bonta, the judges not only determined that the requirement violated the plaintiffs’ Second Amendment rights but also found that there was no historic precedent as required by the standard set forth in Bruen. Plaintiffs had earlier secured a summary judgment win at the district court, but California appealed the ruling to the 9th Circuit. |

In a significant win for supporters of gun rights, the Pennsylvania Superior Court has declared a state statute that limits the open carrying of firearms in Philadelphia as unconstitutional in a recent case, raising doubts about the future of this city-specific regulation. The ruling, delivered on June 23, revolves around Riyadh Sumpter’s case, a Philadelphia resident convicted under Section 6108 of Pennsylvania’s Crimes Code, which prohibits carrying a firearm in public areas of Philadelphia without a permit. While open carry is generally permitted without a license for individuals over 18 in most parts of the state, Philadelphia has maintained stricter licensing prerequisites. |

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has, in the midst of rising insecurity, dismissed the calls for Nigerians to bear arms as a means of protecting themselves in the country.
The IGP, who harped on the need for peaceful coexistence and more dialogue, warned that such an approach would only escalate violence and deepen instability across the country.
He stated this Wednesday at the second Nigeria democracy week organised by the National Democracy Stakeholders Group (NDSG) on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, in Abuja. |

The raid occurred on January 10, when members of the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) served a search warrant at the Pitts' home. Pitts, his wife Stormy Martinez, and their 22-year-old son were all detained during the operation. Martinez recalls the moment she opened the door to find armed officers on their doorstep.
Security camera footage provided by the couple shows members of the SWAT team scouring the inside and outside of their home, leaving no part of their home untouched.
“I had on my robe. Then I heard them hit the door with something, and then I opened it, and then they told me they're like, 'put your hands up," Martinez recalled. |

Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee signed a sweeping ban on common firearms into law on Thursday, joined by anti-gun advocates who had previously supported his gubernatorial campaign.
McKee signed S.359A into law this week before a select group comprised of fellow Democratic lawmakers and activists from Moms Demand Action and the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence.
"Today, we’re delivering progress on the work to keep our children, families, and communities safe from gun violence," said McKee in a statement. "This law builds on the important momentum we’ve created over the last few years and is a testament to the dedication of our advocates, legislators, and many Rhode Islanders who stood up for a safer state." |
