High Court Deals Blow to Bush's War on Terror

"The U.S. Supreme Court placed the first limits on President Bush's war on terrorism on Monday and ruled that terror suspects can use the American judicial system to challenge their confinement."

"The historic moves on the day before the end of the high court's term marked a bitter defeat for Bush's assertion of sweeping presidential powers to indefinitely hold "enemy combatants" after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. It was the court's first rulings on Bush's terrorism policies."

"... In another ruling, it said an American terror suspect held in his nation is entitled to a chance to contest the government's decision." ...

Well at least the court acknowledges that we have some rights.

Four States Holding to 'No Issue' Handgun Laws (JTO)

"With the recent passage of a 'shall issue' handgun law in Ohio, the number of states that have eased restrictions on concealed gun carrying has risen to 35. But in the face of this onslaught, four heartland states are holding fast to their long-time laws that prohibit the carrying of concealed guns by people other than police officers."

"Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wisconsin thus far have withstood the gun lobby's efforts to enact shall-issue laws. ... They stand apart not only from the shall-issue states but from the 11 'may issue' states that allow residents to carry concealed handguns if they can demonstrate a need for protection."
-------

Poster's note: Wisconsin, Nebraska and Kansas prohibit concealed-carry, open carry is perfectly legal, and Illinois has "Six Seconds from Safety", de facto concealed carry for FOID holders.

AL: Chiefs call for ban on rifle used in Birmingham officers' deaths

"The rifle believed used in the recent slayings of three Birmingham police officers would be illegal under a bill now before Congress, a move supported by some of Alabama's top law officers in the wake of the deaths." ...

"'They're very dangerous weapons, they're powerful weapons and they're not the weapon of choice for hunters or anything like that,' said Cochran, the Mobile police chief. 'They're simply powerful weapons for self-defense, but likewise can be used for killing. They're war weapons.'" [emphasis added] ...
-------

Of course by this logic, since 75% of cops shot on duty are shot with their own weapon, the chiefs should be calling for a ban on cops carrying guns.

"A lot of people want to know why I went all the way to the Supreme Court rather than give my name to a policeman. "What's so important about that?" they ask. "What's the big principle at stake?" And last week, when the Supreme Court ruled against me, maybe some thought I was foolish to have done it. But I still think I did the right thing and that there were some issues that had to be decided." ...

"Here's why this was so important to me: I don't believe that the authorities in the United States of America are supposed to walk up to you and ask for your papers. I thought that wasn't lawful. Apparently I was wrong, but I thought that that was part of what we were guaranteed under the Constitution. We're supposed to be free men, able to walk freely in our own country — not hampered, not stopped at checkpoints. That's part of what makes this country different from other places. That's what I was taught."

Park bomb victims can sue Olympic organizers, court rules

"Georgia's Supreme Court ruled Monday that victims of the 1996 Olympic Park bombing, who claim inadequate security contributed to the tragedy, can continue with a lawsuit against the organizers of the games."

"In a unanimous decision, justices upheld a state appeals court ruling, which found that the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games was not immune from liability under state law. The case now goes back to the trial court."

"'We contend that negligent security at Centennial Olympic Park allowed this tragedy to take place,' said Jay Sadd, attorney for the victims, who are seeking compensation for their injuries, lost wages and pain and suffering."

Could this case cause anti-gun businesses rethink their stand on disarming law abiding citizens???

"There has been much talk lately about the possibility of the draft being renewed to force young men (and women?) to enter the military and engage in combat in the Middle East. Most Libertarians and Liberal Democrats are adamantly against the draft, and with good reason. Freedom to dissent from our government's actions and policies is absolutely fundamental to the proper workings of a free Republic. Without this basic and essential freedom the idea that we are a free country is a farce." ...

"Larry Moore stood outside the First African Methodist Episcopal Church on Sunday and described what it felt like to watch last week's videotaped beating of a black man at the hands of a Los Angeles police officer."

"'It's like, here we go again,' he said."

"Last month, a Pizza Hut deliveryman Ronald Honeycutt foiled a robbery attempt. When his assailant pointed a 9mm handgun at him, the deliveryman shot and killed him. The next day, Pizza Hut fired Honeycutt." ...

"Pizza delivery personnel are a favorite target of armed robbers. They are alone, in a strange neighborhood, they are carrying at least a small amount of cash, and they are probably not armed. In short, they are extremely vulnerable and more than likely, not present a challenge to the assailant. Pizza Hut even goes so far as to announce that their employees are not allowed to carry weapons...This action basically places a target squarely upon the backs of their delivery drivers."

"Honeycutt's dismissal has not gone un-noticed by Indianapolis residents. Pizza Hut has reportedly received many complaints and business is down." ...

'I’m trying to let American voters know that there are more choices. I want them to know that the Libertarian Party has this crazy idea that the Constitution means something.'"

... "And yet it might be received with the sound of squealing brakes in one's head. 'Wait a minute -- you mean prisoners can claim a legal right, under some circumstances, to carry shivs?'"

"This is the weird territory at which Canada has arrived. Amongst the free citizenry, the right of armed self-defence is no longer considered respectable. The orthodox position of the federal government is that to store a gun in one's home for the purpose of defence is, ipso facto, illegitimate if not insane. When a shop owner in a rough neighbourhood pulls a 12-gauge or a baseball bat in defence of his life and property, the police in any Canadian city will invariably hem and haw over charges against him while telling the public that he ought to have awaited his fate quietly, phoning the authorities if he happened to survive." ...
