"Everybody's first reaction to the massacre at Virginia Tech was one of shock and sorrow, but, for some, what followed that initial reaction was an angry and ridiculous call for more gun-control. If you, dear reader, were one such person, who believes that tragedies like the one at Virginia Tech would be stopped by taking guns out of civilians' hands, you need to think again."

"...You may be personally against carrying a weapon, and perhaps you even think the police are sufficient enough to protect you, but some of us do not agree. Some of us aren't willing to be murdered, raped, and robbed. Some of us know that calling 9-1-1 won't save us. ..." ...

"A quick refresher. The Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to keep and bear arms. Virtually every gun control law on the books unconstitutionally infringes upon that right."

"You end your column stating that Americans have the right to bear arms. That is obviously not the case, in practice. It is not a right when you must license yourself with the government before being granted the privilege of possession or ownership."

"I also find it ironic that you mention the right to bear arms, not the right to keep them. In Illinois, there is no right to bear arms. Private citizens are not allowed to carry weapons on their person. Here in Indiana, we do have that right... although the carrying of a handgun does require a license." ...

Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people. — Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788.
