"The gun industry is likely to win sweeping protection against civil lawsuits in the U.S. Senate this month, reflecting a more firearm-friendly Senate after the 2004 elections, lawmakers said on Thursday."

"Last year the Republicans killed their own bill, meant to shield gunmakers, gun distributors and gun sellers against many liability suits, after gun opponents attached amendments to it, including an extension of the 1994 ban on assault rifles."

"But the November elections left a bigger Republican majority and the Senate is now a more conservative and more pro-gun rights body. Even many Democrats, particularly from rural states, back the immunity measure." ...

"Entitled the 'UN Second Amendment Protection Act of 2005,' the bill does still not have a number, as Sen. Vitter is trying to get original cosponsors to join him."

"Gun owners across America are increasingly victorious in legislative and elective battles at the local, state and national levels. Nevertheless, anti-gun internationalists, long burrowed in the UN headquarters, are planning, with some success, massive international gun control measures." ...

"Congress will vote any day now on new legislation that would renew parts of the USA PATRIOT Act scheduled to expire or "sunset" at the end of the year, while possibly handing the FBI even more unchecked power to snoop on your mail and private records, including logs of your Internet activities."

"PATRIOT's notorious Section 215 allows intelligence investigators to demand private records about citizens who aren't suspected of spying or terrorism, including medical, financial, and library records, while other parts of PATRIOT radically expanded the government's power to subpoena records or conduct wiretaps to see what you're doing online." ...

Dan K. Thomasson: Shooting holes in the Constitution

... "Sometimes a strict construction of the Constitution isn't so 'narrow or carefully limited.' Take those who follow the teaching and preaching of the National Rifle Association. It contends that the Second Amendment gives it protection from those who would pass laws restricting the use of weapons ranging from pistols to bazookas and beyond."

"The amendment states that a 'well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.'"

"Now a strict interpretation of that amendment would seem to take into consideration the operative clause about the 'well regulated militia,' a condition that no longer exists. ..." ...

That man, Thomas Roman is in custody. Deputies say he turned himself in and confessed to shooting Richard Ansel inside his home. Ansel went to Roman's home looking for his girlfriend, Darlene Wilson. Roman is Wilson's ex-boyfriend.

Deputies say Ansel broke into the home in the Kanapaha neighborhood. There was an altercation, and Roman shot Ansel one time with a rifle.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident, but Roman is in jail because of a warrant out of Levy county for violation of probation. Deputies say they're looking at self defense as a possibility, but the investigation is still on-going.

"Question: Was Attorney General Lockyer correct when he claimed today that it would only cost manufacturers 'one quarter of one cent' in additional cost in order to laser engrave a serial number on the base and side of a bullet of 'handgun ammunition', as required by SB 357?" ...

"Answer: No. The Attorney General and Senator Dunn's cost estimates are seriously WRONG ..." ...

"Question: Is it accurate, as the Attorney General's office argued today, that putting serial numbers on bullets is no different than what other product manufacturers, like drug companies, do in putting a serial number on the product packaging?"

"Answer: No. Drug companies, for example, may put a lot number or other identifying code on their product packaging, but they do not put a unique serial number on individual aspirin tablets. Placing lot numbers on product packaging is not done to identify and record in a government-run database the identity of law-abiding consumers. ..." ...

... "Guns and gun violence are hot political issues in our community right now. A story on The Enquirer's front page Wednesday talked about how all four candidates for Cincinnati mayor are making crime the number one issue of their campaigns. They talked of new jails, new programs, new police oversight, and while each said their ideas were better than their opponents, all have deplored the proliferation of guns in the community. Deploring the guns isn't enough. We need to hear specific plans from all of them about how they are going to disarm the thugs doing the shooting." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
To trust arms in the hands of the people at large has, in Europe, been believed...to be an experiment fraught only with danger. Here by a long trial it has been proved to be perfectly harmless...If the government be equitable; if it be reasonable in its exactions; if proper attention be paid to the education of children in knowledge and religion, few men will be disposed to use arms, unless for their amusement, and for the defence of themselves and their country. — Timothy Dwight, Travels in New England and New York [London 1823]
