Open any hunting magazine and next to the photo of a world class buck or bull you will see an ad for the latest, greatest, hunting gadget – guaranteeing that if you buy it, you’ll punch your tag next fall. From cellular trail cameras that send photos to your phone instantly when triggered, range finding scopes and bow sights, to crossbows that boast sub-one-inch groups out to 100 yards. All these devices, undoubtably, give the hunter more of an advantage in the field. But as gear advances in hunting equipment, it begs the question, are hunters hurting themselves by blindly adopting the new technology?

Registration for dove hunting and wingshooting workshops is now open. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering a program to teach the skills needed to hunt, field dress and cook mourning doves to those with little to no dove hunting experience. The Aug. 14 workshop will include hands-on learning and a live-fire wingshooting clinic. “For those interested in the challenge of dove hunting as a means of sourcing your own protein, this program provides the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge it takes to do it all yourself,” says Jamie Cook, program coordinator with the DNR.

We’ve got a history in my family with shotguns in less-than-12-gauge. The first firearm I ever shot was a Stevens 311 side-by-side in .410-bore. My grandfather, not the largest guy on the planet, was an absolute sucker for the 16 gauge. I’ve got a safe full of shotguns in that now-rare gauge, from a genuine Winchester 1897 pump-action to a Remington Model 11 and others. Today, it seems as though 20 gauge has usurped the 16 in the “not quite 12 gauge, but nearly as powerful” category, and for good nreason—it has 66 to 75 percent of the muzzle energy of the 12 gauge, but with significantly less felt recoil.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will issue 47 tags for the 2021 gray wolf hunt, down from 51 last year. The 2020 wolf trophy game hunting season ended 18 mortalities below the limit. Hunters killed 31 wolves between Sept. 15 and Dec. 31 and an additional two in January.

Virginia-based Taylor’s & Company this week introduced their latest version of John Browning's classic Model 1886 lever-action hunting rifle. While the new TC86 Takedown has a list of classic features such as a color-case receiver and checkered pistol grip walnut stock and matching forearm, it also has contemporary field-ready upgrades to include a rubber butt plate, a wide lever ideal for use with gloves, and a top-mounted Weaver rail with an accompanying peep sight. It is chambered in the hard-hitting and seemingly immortal .45-70 Government.

Spurning Past Support from Anti-Gun Groups, Pat Toomey Choses 2A over Biden ATF Pick

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey went on record Thursday to say he would be a "no" in the expected razor-thin vote on gun control hype man, David Chipman, to lead the ATF. The Pennsylvania Republican in 2013 spearheaded a push to expand background checks nationwide to include virtually all private sales. That effort saw a narrow defeat and fueled a successful campaign to unseat moderate congressional incumbents that supported its passage. The bill and Toomey's repeated circle back to possibilities of rebooting the same proposal earned him a poor rating from pro-gun groups when he ran for re-election in 2016.

Video games. 4chan. “Toxic masculinity.” These are just a few of the media’s favorite folk devils when it comes to assigning blame for mass shootings in America. However, there is startling evidence that how the media covers these tragedies makes them culpable in perpetuating future ones.

Whether it is trying to make a scene look authentic or simply ensuring the star is comfortable carrying a gun, the “technical advisor” role is especially critical in the ever-growing realm of film, television and streaming. So, what does it take to make it in the niche role, and how hard is it training the Tinseltown elite to look cool and collected toting a small or long arm (even the actors and actresses who trash the Second Amendment when they’re in front of news cameras)?

In 1955, Winchester introduced the .243 for two of their rifles, the bolt action Model 70 and the lever action Model 88. Known for its efficiency, the .243 cartridge enjoys a positive reputation to this day, with all major American ammo manufacturers selling the caliber with a large array of bullet weights and types. Additionally, most major firearms manufacturers have at least one weapon chambered for the .243 Winchester – which is why it’s never difficult to find bulk 243 ammunition.

Reincarnation is possible, at least for classic firearm designs with an avid fan base. With modern metallurgy and today’s tight CNC tolerances, retro-style designs can be safer, stronger and better performing than the original. Enthusiasts know that process sometimes surrenders the attractive fit, finish and feel that endeared them to the gun in the first place. That’s not the case with the new .44 Auto Mag., which has somehow captured everything that captivated gun owners when it first appeared on the silver screen and managed to squeeze in improvements.

Writing at the National Review, Cody J. Wisniewski pulls no punches in describing the impact of gun control laws on minority and poor citizens, pointing a finger at self-described “progressives” who support increasingly restrictive gun laws, wondering how they can claim to be “champions of the people.”

San Jose’s new gun controls will hurt minorities, Latino Rifle Association founder P.B. Gomez warned.

The San Jose City Council responded to the May 26, Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) mass shooting by passing numerous gun controls, Breitbart News reported. The VTA attacker used handguns which were “legally” acquired and “registered” in compliance with California law.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.' The right of the whole people, old and young, men, women and boys, and not militia only, to keep and bear arms of every description, and not such merely as are used by the militia, shall not be infringed, curtailed, or broken in upon, in the smallest degree; and all this for the important end to be attained: the rearing up and qualifying a well-regulated militia, so vitally necessary to the security of a free State. Our opinion is that any law, State or Federal, is repugnant to the Constitution, and void, which contravenes this right. [Nunn vs. State, 1 Ga. (1 Kel.) 243, at 251 (1846)]
