"Two upcoming government reports will say the quality of screening at airports is no better now than before the Sept. 11 attacks, according to a House member who has been briefed on the contents."

"The Government Accountability Office ... and the Homeland Security Department’s inspector general are expected to soon release their findings on the performance of Transportation Security Administration screeners."

"'A lot of people will be shocked at the billions of dollars we’ve spent and the results they’re going to see, which confirm previous examinations of the Soviet-style screening system we’ve put in place,' Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., told The Associated Press on Friday." [emphasis added] ...

"Thousands of airline travelers a day are wrongfully identified as being on the government’s 'no fly' list of known or suspected terrorists due to the failings of the airline industry’s pre-screening process, experts told a congressional panel Wednesday. Meanwhile, the government system intended to take over that screening process is so underfunded it might not get off the ground, a government official warned." ...

"Moreover, because of national security concerns, only a portion of the information on government-controlled no-fly lists is shared with the airlines, Paul Rosenzweig of the Heritage Foundation told members of a House Homeland Security subcommittee." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: If I'm not mistaken, this list is the same one that Kennedy et al, want to be able to deny our basic rights over. If the airlines can't get it right, and the process is so overwhelmed, what's to say that we the little people won't be overwhelmed as well?

Columbus City Council will meet [July 11] starting at 5 pm for its routine weekly meeting. What is NOT routine is that Council will likely be holding its final public comment, and a final vote, on the controversial and irrational ban on most semi-automatic rifles, and many shotguns and handguns.

Council has indicated that it will hear from three proponents of the ban/registration scheme, and three opponents, prior to its vote that night. Some minor modifications are possible to the proposed ordinance, but the ban is likely to pass. Under Columbus City Code, the ban would become law 30 days after any such vote by Council.

This is an anti-gun City Council that has largely ignored the comments of law-abiding Columbus residents who do not wish to be "criminalized" with the stroke of a pen.

PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND THIS COUNCIL MEETING TO SHOW YOUR CONTINUED OPPOSITION TO THIS ENTIRELY UNNEEDED PIECE OF LEGISLATION.

Bob Barr's dismissal of the ASK program ("Anti-gun initiative full of blanks," @issue, June 29) is paranoid bluster.

As a parent who asks, I can attest that I couldn't care less if someone owns guns, enjoys shooting or is a National Rifle Association member. I simply won't let my children become a statistic by playing unsupervised in a home where guns are present. Further, every parent of whom I've ever asked this awkward question has been candid and appreciative.

The ASK program isn't stealth anti-gunism; it's pragmatism in action. It avoids infringement on Second Amendment rights and concentrates instead on preventing the too-common tragedy of dead or wounded children. I wonder if Barr has ever considered that accidental gun deaths of children might be at an all-time low because parents are asking.

"After 75 years the .22 Hornet cartridge still hasn’t quite run out of steam and still has its share of hard-core devotees."

"Although the Hornet made its debut as a commercial varmint cartridge after being introduced by Winchester in 1930, the cartridge’s origins date back to the early or mid-1920s when wildcatters experimented loading the old .22 WCF case (originally a black powder cartridge) with smokeless powders and began using jacketed instead of lead bullets."
